In this edition of #ThePrintUninterrupted, ThePrint's Senior Consulting Editor Jyoti Malhotra speaks to Prof Wendy Doniger, historian of Ancient India and perhaps the world’s greatest living mythologist, about Indian mythology, the ancient texts and what connection there is between Hinduism and Hindutva. Also, did Ram really exist? And is the Gita the greatest book of the Hindus

Pg. 67 - It is claimed that the entire Harappan culture had a population of 40,000! COMMENT: This is estimated as the population of Mohenjo-Daro alone. The population of the entire culture is estimated around 500,000. Pg 112 - Wheat is mentioned as a food item in the Rigvedic period. COMMENT: Wheat is not mentioned in the Rigveda at all. It first occurs in the Maitrayani Samhita of the Yajurveda. Pg 130 - The author claims that there are no Gods in the Vedas who are Shudras. COMMENT: It is anachronistic to assign castes to Rigvedic deities, but nevertheless, Pushan, Vesmapati and others have been considered Shudra deities in later times. Pg 194 fn.- Gandhi's commentary on the Gita (a sacred Hindu scripture) was titled 'Asakti Yoga' (translated as the science of deep attachment). COMMENT: The title of Gandhis work is 'Anasakti Yoga' (trans. Science of non-Attachment). Pg 206 - The book wrongly states that the Hindus had only a triad of passions. COMMENT: Hindu scriptures list six main evils and the concept of shadripus (six internal enemies) is very well known. Pg 441 - The book claims that Firoz Shah redeemed a number of Hindu slaves COMMENT: A misrepresentation of the fact that he employed (not redeemed) 12,000 of his 180,000 slaves forcibly in royal factories for producing articles of consumption by Muslim elites. No manumission was involved. Pg 445 - Dates of Saint Kabir are given as 1450 1498. COMMENT: His demise is believed to have occurred in 1518, and the traditional date of birth is 1398. Pg 448 - In 713 Muhammad ibn Qasim invaded Sind. COMMENT: Muhammad bin Qasim invaded Sind in 711. Pg 450- It is claimed that Emperor Ala-ud-Din Khalji did not sack temples in Devagiri. COMMENT: His contemporary Amir Khusro clearly mentions that the Emperor sacked numerous temples and raised mosques instead. Pg 459 - King Ala-ud-din Husain of Bengal patronized Saint Chaitanya. COMMENT: Saint Chaitanya never met the king, and left his kingdom to avoid persecution, as did his disciples. The king had destroyed Hindu temples in Orissa. Pg 532 - Emperor Akbar moved his capital from Fatehpur Sikri to Delhi in 1586. COMMENT: Emperor Akbar moved his capital to Lahore in 1587, and thereafter to Agra. Pg 537-8 - The Sikh teacher Guru Govind Singh was assassinated in 1708, while 'attending Emperor Aurangzeb'. Emperor Aurangzeb died in 1707. COMMENT: Guru Gobind Singh was assassinated in 1708 during the reign of Aurangzebs successor, Emperor Bahadur Shah I. It is insulting to say that the Guru was attending on the Emperor. Pg 550 - The book claims that Mirabai lived from 1498-1597, and then on p. 568, the author claims that Mirabai lived from 1450-1525! COMMENT: Both dates are wrong and the commonly accepted dates are 1498-1547. Pg 552 - The book claims that the Ramcharitmanas was written at Varanasi. COMMENT: Both modern scholarship as well as tradition accept that the work (or at least most of it) was written in Ayodhya. Section on Bibliography: Shekhawat, V. Origin and Structure of purushartha Theory: An attempt at Critical Appraisal. Journal of Indian Council of Philosophical Research 7:1 (1900), 63-67. COMMENT:The correct issue and year of this Journal issue are actually 8:2 and 1991. The bibliography has dozens of errors. Some references cited by Doniger simply do not exist. B. DEROGATORY, DEFAMATORY AND OFFENSIVE STATEMENTS Clumsily written, each chapter is a shocking and appalling series of anecdotes which denigrate, distort and misrepresent Hinduism and the history of India and Hindus. Doniger uses selective quotations from obscure and non-original, peripheral and ignorant references with a bizarre emphasis on sexuality and eroticism. Cited below are only a handful of quotes along with our understanding and interpretation, with references from Hindu scripture. [Page number precedes the quote from the book. This is followed by a rebuttal comment.] Pg 40 If the motto of Watergate was Follow the money, the motto of the history of Hinduism could well be Follow the monkey or, more often Follow the horse. COMMENT: Very derogatory and offensive. The motto of Hinduism is to follow the truth and unite with God. Pg 112 - The author alleges that in Rigveda 10.62, it is implied that a woman may find her own brother in her bed! COMMENT: The hymn has no such suggestion. It is offensive to suggest that the sacred text of Hindus has kinky sex in it. Pg 128 - The book likens the Vedic devotee worshipping different Vedic deities to a lying and a philandering boyfriend cheating on his girlfriend(s). COMMENT: This is offensive and ignores that fact that in the Rigveda, the gods are said to be all united, born of one another, and from the same source. Pg 225 -Dasharathas son is certainly lustful... Rama knows all too well what people said about Dasharatha; when Lakshmana learns that Rama has been exiled, he says, The king is perverse, old, and addicted to sex, driven by lust (2.18.3) COMMENT: Sri Rama is revered and worshipped as a deity. The highly acclaimed and critical edition of Valmikis Ramayana records no such statement attributed to Lakshmana. An imagined phrase, 'kama-sakta' is mistranslated as 'addicted to sex' by the author whereas it normally means filled with desires. Valmiki uses a phrase 'samani-madhah' (trans. Possessed of passion). Pg 467 - Harihara and Bukka (the founders of the Vijayanagara Empire that saved Hindu culture in S India) double-crossed the Delhi Sultan when they reconverted to Hinduism. COMMENT: The brothers committed apostasy as they had been imprisoned and forcibly converted to Islam, and immediately reverted to Hinduism when they were 1000 miles from the Sultan, under the influence of a Hindu ascetic. Pg 468-469 -The mosque, whose serene calligraphic and geometric contrasts with the perpetual motion of the figures depicted on the temple, makes a stand against the chaos of India, creating enforced vacuums that India cannot rush into with all its monkeys and peoples and colors and the smells of the bazaar COMMENT: It is simply unacceptable that a scholar can flippantly, pejoratively and derogatorily essentialize the Hindus as monkeys and peoples, colors and smells.., and chaos in most insulting manner with the aspersion thrown at the entire Hindu culture and community all over the world. Such generalization has no place in serious scholarly work. Pg 509 - Shankara and the philosophers wifeThis tale contrasts sex and renunciation in such a way that the renunciant philosopher is able to have his cake and eat it, to triumph not only in the world of the mind (in which, before this episode begins, he wins a series of debates against the nonrenouncing male Mimamsa philosopher) but in the world of the body, represented by the philosophers wife (not to mention the harem women who clearly prefer Shankara to the king in bed). The author attributes the tale to Shankaradigvijaya of Madhava and to Ravichandra's commentary on Amarushataka. COMMENT: The author concocts the story as a sexual orgy in which the Saint Adi Shankara and King Amruka take turns making love to the latters wives after he is tired. Both her sources however state that the King was already dead and the Saint transferred his soul into the dead Kings body through his yogic powers. There is no suggestion in the texts that the queens prefer Shankara to the king in bed. Pg 571- It is alleged that in a hymn from Saint Kshetrayyas poetry, God rapes the women devotees. COMMENT: The hymn merely presents devotion using spiritual metaphors and the hymns of the Saint seen collectively depict it as a passionate love affair between the God and the devotees. No rape is implied in this hymn at all. Taken from Varun Nair: ru-vid.com/show-UCYS6cAwpvrZcSR8qYwF6ECA

I've enjoyed watching every point of view put forth by The Print, largely due to its balanced narrative. However, I am quite annoyed by this particular point of view. The annoyance is not because of the views of speaker on Hinduism, its more directed by how the editor almost endorses those views. Hinduism as a religion, allows debate and even gives significant room for questioning and criticism. However, the editor hardly seems to challenge / refute any of the speakers point of view. Are you able to give a similar audience to critiques of any of the Abrahamic religions? Why not have a candid session with Salman Rushdie on Satanic verses and present the unadulterated point of view on a certain religion? or why not on missionaries and conversion in low income economies. I'm sure you won't. Disappointed indeed

"... Are you able to give a similar audience to critiques of any of the Abrahamic religions?" Secularism, particularly in Europe, is strong because of the space for critique that has been part of religious debate for a long time there. For example, watch any discussion on RU-vid between Christopher Hitchens and Christian scholars and evangelists of all traditions. I think this is healthy ... the basis of 'ultimate' truth, surely, is in its capacity to reflect ultimate wisdom forged in the fires of critique. I think the worry here is where Islamic (e.g. Iran, Pakistan), Christian (USA southern states), Buddhist (Myanmar and Sri Lanka), Jewish (Israel and Palestine) or Hindu (Hinduttva) political power also insists on its own definition and policing of religious orthodoxy.

The Hindu Rashtra doesn't figure in texts because when texts were composed, no one would've ever thought that someday Hindus would face persecution in their own country and their subcontinent would eventually be divided in two Islamic republics viz. The little girl, who had just started to read her book, replied to the total stranger, "What would you want to talk about?" "Oh, I don't know," said the atheist. "How about why there is no God, or no Heaven or Hell, or no life after death?" as he smiled smugly. "Okay," she said. "Those could be interesting topics but let me ask you a question first. A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat the same stuff - grass. Yet a deer excretes little pellets, while a cow turns out a flat patty, but a horse produces clumps. Why do you suppose, that is?" The atheist, visibly surprised by the little girl's intelligence, thinks about it and says, "Hmmm, I have no idea." So fascinating to know the view point of a person born and brought up in a different culture looking at Hinduism with her lens and her value system and her limited westernized context of what India is. I would have liked Jyoti ji to engage her and question her little bit more than just accepting some historical facts about Ram, Rig Veda, and "Gita as the main book" cocept propagated by British etc. but Jyoti ji obviously had her agenda of trying to pent BJP and RSS in a certain way. I would like anyone watching this certainly not to get upset but use it to understand the way of thinking of western thinkers so as to be in a position to understand the BS they are able to propagate all over the world and to counter their made up narrative. Nice interview but much left to be desired. I thought there were so many questions you could ask: 1. The invasion of Srivijaya by the Cholas: Was it not invasion and expansionism by a Hindu king? Not to mention the more recent invasion of Kabul by Ranjit Singh, albeit a Sikh. 2. What is the train of reasoning that takes you to arrive at the conclusion that Ram is purely mythological and not historical? 3. What was the process of reflection and reconciliation among the Hindus of ancient times upon invasion inn term of mythology? 4. If you compare Ramayana with Mahabharata, how much of them is historical and how much are mythological? 5. Among the mythologies she studies, where does the history end and the myth start? How does one separate the two? Examples where the line is clear or blurred? 6. How does she undertake the logical leap in the same sentence, from Hanuman being the leader of Rama's armies and yet not martial, but not militant or aggressive, just a funny, charming character? I thought a lot of warriors are found to be charming and often they have a sense of humor as well. 7. What is the origin of the orthopraxy she mentions? E.g. How did the Hindus decide that eating cows is not desirable but goats, horses, birds and other animals are fine? 8. The eroticity and asceticism she mentions in the book on Shiva--- how is it different from the story of Vishwamitra? Isn't it in the same spirit? 9. How does she think of a path to healing and reconciliation might begin, especially where there are still visible wounds of past conflict, the temple-mosque issues being a case in point? 10. How did Hindu mythology affect her own sensibilities in how she looks at her current world? 11. How does she compare the past sacrificial temple religion of ancient Judaism in the Roman provincial times, and Greek Temple religion with Hinduism? 12. When did Hindus begin to look at ourselves as "Hindus" since it's a much more modern terminology? Was the boundary between Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism always that clear? 13. How did the Hindu mythology influence the Buddhist jataka stories and Jain texts? 14. Was there a lot of conflict within Hindus? Between say, Shaivas and Vaishnavas? How does mythology portray such conflicts? 15. How did the conflicts with the Greeks, and other invaders affect Hindu mythology?

And over centuries many known / unknown influencers have carved out and / or added deeper / shallower / different interpretations and all these versions co-exist. I have not heard or experienced anything of the sort where I must do a particular action to stay Hindu. Hinduism gives me independence to build my own personal spiritual journey in case I want to. Or I can very well stay an atheist, again allowed in Hinduism. Unlike all other faiths, Hindu way of life is so open that anyone can follow many of its recommendations while keeping faith in any other religion at the same time - non-binary. As an individual I am happy that I can pick and choose from very rich / detailed options within Hinduism to which I am able to relate to, to fulfil my spiritual needs. No Hindu truly feels compelled to convert others as this is a personal subject. The word Hindu itself is a relatively recent phenomena where people felt they need to give a name to a religion followed by non-Abrahaminic followers and they named it based on the name of the region. I don’t agree those folks may continue to criticise or interpret Hinduism in their own way as they please, since they named it especially when they have nothing to do with it. In 6th -7th century whole world developed multiple religions and used to follow multiple gods. And after lot of chaos Christianity & Islam replaced all of them with single god concept. India was continued with multiple religions like Jainism, Bhuddism, Shivaism, Vaishnavism etc etc till 8th century. Seeing the fate of other countries in 8th century, when Buddhism was in decline then Adi Shankaracharya clubbed all religions into one where many gods are converted into Vishnu avatars and prohibited creation of new Gods. He said people can create new Gods but all Brahmins will follow only main gods and do Poojas to them. Hinduism, Sikhism & Bakthism concepts came late mostly as reaction to Islamic invasion.

And If Hindus need to survive, They need to Unite and Create a Hiindu Rashtra that represents their Identity, Culture and Civilizaiton. There is nothing wrong in this, Just like Jewish people have their own Naton or Muslims have their own Islamic Nations. I fail to see why the Leftists and Secular People fear Hindu Rashtra so much ? Its not like Hindus have a History of Persecution and Violence. People like me who are Atheists feel safe and at home in a Hindu Rashtra.
