A lot people don't know about this, including the Philippines. When US defeated Spain and took over as the colonial master of the Philippines in 1898, these two countries signed the Paris Treaty of 1898. In it, both countries acknowledged that the territories of Philippines lied EAST of east meridian 118. The island in dispute? It lies west of east Meridian 118! It is really that simple. Philippine did not grab these island until after the San Francisco Treaty of 1951, from a still-militarily-weak China. But for the policy of “anyone but China” by the world’s hegemony, there should have never had any dispute in the South China Sea. -Peter Y

The root of all this is arrogance. Had China approached the Philippines with humility, offering a mutually beneficial strategic alliance, not only would they have secured the SCS, they would have had a launching pad for all their maritime activities in the region. They would have had a wall against a south-western assault from it's enemies. They also would have gained a strategic advantage over Japan, as well as uncontested access to Taiwan. Instead, they chose the route of the bully and tried to push aside the Philippines, knowing they had military superiority. Now they find themselves hated on all sides. Could they still win this conundrum? Maybe. But it would come at the cost of billions of dollars and soldier lives. They would also be essentially causing further economic turmoil on it's own citizens. They dropped the ball on this whole thing.

China and humility are two words that should not be used in the same sentence. look up, "middle kingdom syndrome." The Chinese leadership have viewed themselves as the central pivot of the universe pretty much since the Mongols went native after invading. Even when occupied and bullied by Western Powers in the 18th & 19th century, they maintained the delusion of their imperial omnipotence.

Your idea is good but the Philippines is controlled by the usa through corruption and spying.The usa would never allow it . China would have done this if offered but the offer would never reach china. The usa is guilty of spying on its own allies. The Australian reporter assange blew the whistle on the usa and is now in England facing extradition to the usa. Most likely the Philippines government is being spied on by the usa or the usa is informed of any policies the Philippines is doing by inside government sources.

Both India and the Philippines are victims of Chinese thuggery and thievery. The economies are among the fastest-growing in the world. Both are democracies and have huge populations. It makes great sense for India and the Philippines to deepen and strengthen their political, economic and defense cooperation. The Philippines is the first foreign country to purchase and deploy India's Brahmos Missile System. The Philippines will be needing more to defend its thousands of islands and its seas against Chinese aggression. Mabuhay India-Philippines Solidarity and Friendship!

@@laosasean8482With regard to the Philippines, it was extremely lucky that China never had a decent naval fleet in the past. Now that China has the capability to sail far from its coastlines, it is engaging in thuggery and thievery in the SCS. The US never had a history of colonizing countries in Asia or Africa until it colonized the Philippines in 1898. Saying China has never had a history of colonizing the Philippines to cover Chinese theft of Philippine territories and marine resources is an absurd denial of what is actually happening today.

The US, in particular, will look like a petty gangster compared to China if we look at how many Chinese mainlanders were killed or have died unecessarily since the CCP grabbed power.

@@rainieresguerra6519 That China mistake for not having the navy because all the invaders that attacked China are came from sea, I mean the European, US and Japanese. They learns so much from the past and that why today they have the biggest navy on earth and expanding the nuclear forces. Philippines goal is not just about South China sea but they actually tries to help theirs master to contain China and they won't hesitate that one day they will claim that Taiwan and Haina is part of them too if China give them in an inch and then they will go for more, just like the Japanese, Russian, and others western colonizers did in the past. And also the India too they are so jealous of China because China got Tibet which is very strategic location where all the rivers in Asia start out from there.
