Pakistan won in the 1965 war as on the night of 7/8 September 1965, a Flotilla comprising seven ships of Pakistan Navy, bombarded Indian port Dwarka in operation code named 'SOMNATH'. PN Flotilla's attack took the enemy by surprise and dealt a severe blow to the morale of the Indian Navy that not only rattled its defenses but paralyzed its response. Moreover, in its air raids on Adampur and Halwara, the PAF destroyed a large number of Hunter aircraft. However, the airstrikes led by the 6 F-86s of the PAF played merry hell with Indian formations and destroyed the Indian armour and infantry trying to cross the BRB Canal. On 6th September, 1965, during an aerial combat over enemy territory, Squadron Leader Mohammad Mahmood Alam flying as pilot of an F-86 Sabre Jet, shoot down two enemy Hunter aircraft and damaged three others. Furthermore, there was a great resistance by the local people of Pakistan. This war was started by Ayub Khan who was the Chief Martial Law Administrator (he was the first one to introduce martial law in country) launched Operation Gibraltar against India in 1965, leading to an all-out war. It resulted in a stalemate and peace was restored via the Tashkent Declaration. Domestically, Ayub subscribed to the laissez-faire policy of Western-aligned nations at the time. The local people of Pakistan played a significant role during the 1965 war, particularly in areas close to the conflict zones. Their contributions varied across different regions and communities but were crucial in supporting the Pakistani military effort and ensuring the defense of their homeland. Support for Troops: Local communities often provided logistical support to the Pakistani military, such as food, shelter, and transportation. They also assisted in intelligence gathering, helping identify potential threats and enemy movements in their areas. Civil Defense: Civilians living in border areas were directly affected by the conflict, facing the risk of enemy attacks and cross-border shelling.
