But Sri Lanka defeated India twice in 1996 in their home soil. And SL are the 1996 World Champions. Huge credit to great Clive Lloyd match referee standing tall coming out as a lion and giving decision bravely in mad indian crowd. Also Both Pakistans and Indians helped 96 period to SL to co-host the Worldd cup. We value it. In Sri Lanka Sport Miniter "Mahindaananda" at 2011 said something like this as "2011 WC final was sold to India" but All Sri Lanka fans discriminated him he was just seeking attention.

There is a VERY INTERESTING true story behind why Sri Lanka became the aggressive cricket playing nation from the relatively unknown team it was just a few years before this. This was a match when Sanath Jayasuriya announced himself to the world and specifically to most Indian fans who never heard of him before this game. He has tormented India ever since, until his retirement. So the story goes that in the 1985 India tour of Sri Lanka, the Sri Lanka home crowd was booing India very badly and the umpires (who were from SL) also gave a lot of bad LBW decisions against India, and SL won that test series. Kapil Dev was India's captain and Duleep Mendis was SL captain. SL won that series, and Kapil Dev was not happy and rightly so - because the umpiring was very bad in that series, and even SL cricketers and commentators agreed that India should have won 2 tests and drawn one test. But SL won their first ever test series against India. Krishnamachari Srikanth was India's frontline batsman in the 1984 tour and the SL crowd was very rude and unruly to him throughout the tour because Kris Srikkanth is a Tamilian. When Indian Team came back to New Delhi in 1985, Kapil Dev was livid with the SL cricket board and persuaded BCCI to cut all ties. So for 8 years (until 1993) India did not play SL in Sri Lanka. Also, India famously opted out of one of the Asia cup tournaments (1986) because SL was playing in it. SL players wanted to change the way the world looked at their team. They wanted to play and win. This is when the transformation of Sri Lanka began quietly. In the late 1980s. In 1993, India went to Sri Lanka again for a full series - after almost 8 years. Azhar was the captain. Before the actual series began, India was playing tour matches against local teams. And Vijay Lokapally was a sports editor with The Hindu newspaper traveling with the Indian team. In one of the local warm up matches - India played against Colombo. The local SL press reporters were talking to Vijay Lokapally and told him this: "there is this lefthander from Matara…a crazy fellow. He is known to play some astounding, outrageous shots". THis is the first time any Indian heard of Sanath, and it was a reporter. Very soon, the Indian team was shocked by Sanath, playing for a small local colombo team in a practice game, batting at number 5, he came in when his team was 97 for 4, then he smashed 151 runs in 239 balls. The Indian team was shocked. Nobody in India knew this guy Sanath because he hadn't played against India yet for Sri Lanka. (He did play a few ODIs for SL but not against India). 3 years later when SL came to the world cup in India, for the first time, the Indian fans saw Sanath and his fury. Sri Lankan cricket had changed, and the world wasn't prepared for it. The rest is history.

I remember, after 2 wickets in first over , my school announced holiday and next day we see each other's face.

Jayasurya always shines against India in one way or another..he usually murders India with bat but in this match he failed with the bat but performed well with the ball..what a legend👏he was always a nightmare for team India..

After 1/2 azhar not place slip.Desilva scored 14 fours in his 66 score and at least 10 fours gone from that area which was kept empty by our captain without employing a slip fielder. spinner Ashish Kapoor yelling for help from his captain by obliging towards a help by keeping a fielder in that empty area, but our captain not responded as he wanted the situation as he was leading the fixing drama. Whenever the ball goes back side, our keeper Mongia used to dive perfect opposite direction where ball was going.nobody go for second batting at Kolkata as we experienced many wins there by batting first, but our beloved fixing captain choose to bowl first for his gifts.
