My longest headshot was 1000m. I could do easily better that. But game does not render enemies beyond 1000m.

The name "sniper" comes from the verb "to snipe", which originated in the 1770s among soldiers in British India in reference to shooting snipes, a wader that was considered an extremely challenging game bird for hunters due to its alertness, camouflaging color and erratic flight behavior.

ACTUALLY the indian army had good snipers during World war 1 and World war 2 (ofcourse under the british back then) BUT also back then snipers could shoot at a maximum range of 600 to 750 or 800 meters becoz guns were not advanced like todays......so techically a DMR wud be considered a sniper according to early 20th century standards....but anyways as time progressed the indian army didnt really evolve that well in world of sniping....but progress is taking place slow but gradually!

Snipers also have multiple roles. Their primary role is getting behind enemy lines, and gather intelligence while also reporting enemy movements. Only their secondary role is going after HVT or High Value Target. In many ways a sniper is as important as a trained commando. All the more reason for Indian Army to have employed them years ago.

This is absolutely true, Snipers have to deployed in a very tactful way. DMRs use G28, Mk14, 416 etc. They have usually adjustable scopes which can give good cover for cqc and guerrilla warfare cause Indian forces serve usually in the mountains or hilly terrains where operations happen. Snipers are deployed when you know about an area and if that location is safe for them. Along with a spotter. It's because snipers can't afford to get their cover blown.

Oh yes. I fully agree with the viewpoint of our Commando Brother here. We have a lot of catching up to do. Our policy makers lack foresight.

Being a Sniper is not that easy.. You need lots of patience, consistency,quick decision making skills, calculation skills, elevation, wind and distance calculation, rotation of earth etc etc

Indian Army has a few dozen "sniper rifles" but we do not have the "sharpshooters" or "snipers" who can use those rifles effectively. In fact our Army does not have a Sniper Training Course in its entire establishment. Ironically, Pakistani army has USA trained Snipers who use the Arctic Warfare Magnum rifles in .338 Lapua Magnum caliber. There is also information about PLA (Chinese army) using their normal standard issue 5.8mm Army rifles to hit targets beyond 800 metres quite easily. We have a lot of work to do in very short time, else we may lose too many Soldiers in future battles.

Since 2016, lot of things have changed. Pakistanis were sniping Indian patrols from 1000m which were out of range of our 7.62 DMRs. Then we procured proper sniper rifles like Sako TRG chambered in .338 Lapua which is sniping caliber. And sniper units were also setup.

India has now one of the deadliest sniper rifle ,like sako trg, skorpio tgt which are now used in ladakh ,loc ,i think we only had draganov and galil during sirs tenure thats why he is saying we were jot that evolved but now we have rifles which can shoot at a distance of 1500 metres

Truth is the citizens Never get to hold and gun unless you're in the arm forces, so to reach a level on par with other military sniper were at a disadvantage. In some European and North America from a young age they would be taught how to shoot a rifle by their father so they are more natural when it come to long-range shooting.

ASHVA SHAKTI YASHOBAL!!! THREE CHEERS FOR THE 61ST CAVALRY AND THE PRESIDENTS BODY GUARDS!!!. Husain spent time at the 61st Rissala stables & royal stables of Rajmata Gayatri Devi in Jaipur. Rajmata Gayatri Devi patronized Indian painters like Ram Kumar, Gaitonde, Manjit Bawa, among others. It's after this stint at Jaipur that he met Madhuri Dixit at an award function in 1994 and carried out a series of Horses & Madhuri paintings and then entered film making. He made a series of paintings on 61st Cavalry, PBG, various Rissala's, Lancers, Cavalries, Army, State Forces & Polo. They were sketches & oil on canvases. These have remained private and not showcased publicly till date. The painting material was provided by courtesy of Rajmata Gayatri Devi & her friend Mrs Zorawar Singh. He painted over 25-30 sketches & paintings on the various Army Rissala's, Cavalries, Lancers, Polo & horses. Husain would spend long hours watching young cavalry officers play practice & polo chukkars on the private cavalry polo grounds next to the Cavalry officers mess in Khatipura. He actually painted a live horse in the middle of Connaught Place in the early 90s at Happenings, belonging to koel & Kali Puri, during an art opening. To his mind the horse was a metaphor for freedom and he craved to be so free himself that he didn’t want to be shackled by anything. MF Husain was hoisted by The Maharani of Jaipur, Rajmata Gayatri Devi and The Jaipur Rissala between 1992 and 1995. The eminent painter spent his joyful days at the Jaipur Rissala which is presently known as the 61st Cavalry, staying in the cavalry officer's mess. In his time over there, Husain painted a series of paintings which depicted the army and the polo horses. Besides Husain immortalized Her Highness Gayatri Devi in the various portraits, he painted of her. However, a few of those portraits remained incomplete as Husain could never return to culminate the artistic work he had undertaken at The Rissala. Talking of Rajmata Gayatri Devi, she strongly hoped that the market will lead to the arts coming into a happier position - as she said, art is the last thing people invest in when they have bought their real estate, jewels, cars and other expensive toys. She believed patronage was needed to support the artists for they are our heritage & repositories of culture. Both visual & performing artists & artistes needed to be given a better economic deal that gives them the freedom to create without having to worry where their next meal was going to come from. Art is a very erratic pay master, she pushed for schemes to be launched by Rajasthan Government to bring more artists within its ambit - after all, if assured work can be provided at the rural level for development, why not for artists, artistes & artisans? She wrote to the government to explore the possibility of taking a fresh look at arts management and create an arts cadre that will help run the several thousand arts institutions in the country. Introducing professional courses in institutes like IIM could be the first step to market the arts better towards the end of making the arts self sufficient. Steps need to be taken urgently to undo the damage wreaked by unscrupulous art galleries. In their race to extract their profits they raised the prices of art to unsustainable levels, leaving many artists in the country in pitiable conditions. She supported artists in best possible ways for sustainable growth. She acquired for her personal collections and gifting to her close friends, art works of upcoming and established Indian painters. Her homes Indian painters adorn the walls. I personally remember an incident where on my retuem from Delhi polo season, I mentioned to her about the plight and hard times Mr Gaitonde had fallen on as he along with Ramkumar, Manjit Bawa, Khanna were closely associated with the cavalry and were regulars to the Jaipur Polo grounds at Delhi. She heard me and next morning wished to buy his works along with few other artists. 30-35 oil on canvases of the painters immediately. That purchase had hugely helped Gaitonde to tide over his large accumulated debts after his accident which left him physically restrained and then the fire which destroyed his house, She did not want anyone to know other than Mrs Zorawar Singh her close confidante. She had most pious and gentle helping heart and she felt pained for any artists trouble. God Bless her and the family. Thanks to God her grand children bring her great peace and she must be happy in heaven's see them do so well. Princesses Lalitya, her husband and her lovely children and Maharaj Devraj bring her great honor. They are doing extremely well and very humble and beautiful in their demeanor. I disagree with the Gentleman. The term “sniper” is not something about range at which you shoot. Sniper is more like how you shoot, Snipers are different from other gunners because they shoot ‘Precise’ & have good ‘concealment/cover’. Enemy have very hard time in Judging the Position of Snipers. While for example, a typical .50 cal gunner also can shoot at 1 mile distance but he will be not Precise & he will put bullets on target just to suppress the enemy fire. In India we have something called sniper school. Special forces use Sako TRG 42 & mostly infantry equipped with Dragunov rifle.

Army officer is right. Indian forces don't have snipers. They DMR guy uses SVD rifles. DMR guy uses generally 7.62 aka 308 or 5.56 as per American standards. 5.56 have very less punching power left at those ranges. In American we use Mk12, SR25, (5.56) These rifles are sub- MOA rifles. That means it shoots less than 1 inch at 100yards, point of aim & impact. For 7.62 platform US uses HK417, M14, Mk17, etc. For snipers Army uses lapua rounds, M24, M2010, M40A5 etc. Barrett M82 used not for sniper but use for Anti Material capabilities like killing enemy behind cover. Sniper generally works in 2 man team, snipers & spotter. Spotter carries high magnification spotting scope with range finder, kestrel, dope card, ballestic calculator. He also carries dmr or normal rifle to engage the enemy in closer environment. Sniper & Spotter have to blend in. They are not attacking force. They are used by Command to give Intel about the enemy also because they are trained to blend with the environment & stay quiet for long periods of time. It's not like moves shows. You talked about Kris Kyle, he was working as DM on high ground to provide overarching. While he was firing. His Spotter pulling up the security & watch his rear. Sniper in urban combat is totally different then open terrain

Well, I have to salute him. Most of us Indians think we are the best nation with best of everything. We can't even complement the achievements of the Chinese or other nations. We live in the past. What is past for us ? We were a bunch of kingdoms. India didn't exist until beginning of 20th century. Some say it started to emerge as a single nation with common principles after 1857. Anyways, a great successful nation is the one which recognizes it's limitations and delivers on it's promises and consequently progressing forward by serving it's citizens. I think he has a valid argument here when he says we haven't evolved much in this category..he's experienced, prolly knows his stuff. Hope we pick up this skill and improve our security situation rather than blasting this guy coz we are emotionally butthurt.

We dont have a sniper culture because of certain reasons, one being not requiring the need for one. NATO forces(especially usa and uk) developed this culture because their operations mostly consisted of counter terrorism which require them to take such long ranged shots from a secure and safe hideout.

If there's no sniper in a team then everyone must be using ACOG SCOPE.

New knowledge

Snipers are overrated...mostly because of hollywood. They can be useful in extreme insurgency areas like iraq and afghanistan but not in kashmir. In kashmir a marksman is more than enough... in conventional warfare, sniper's role are limited to mostly recon missions...today we have drones and satellites for recon...further every army batallion in India has a dedicated recon platoon...(mostly its the ghatak platoon).

I'm a sniper and we don't have that much developed sniper skill, the Russians are the best. I, myself, learned a lot from my colleagues from Russia that affects the accuracy of hits. such as the Force of gravity, the humidity of the air, and the force of the wind itself, the position of the shooter, the trigger, optics, and of course the caliber and rifle from which you shoot, there is also the basic knowledge of Ballistics and Mathematics. but, she said nicely, today there are calculators, it's always harder for me to shoot from the Hill down than the other way around. Today there are sniper rifles such as "Sevastoplj or Orzis 5000 caliber 12.7 that go up to 4 kilometers. The most difficult thing in sniper calling is counter sniping. People who are saying in kashmir there is no use of sniper are stupid enough. How much of our soldiers died In kargil And how much soldiers dies in close range combat today too why not to have 1 sniper in 10 or 20 commandos.

Actually it doesn't matter if we have snipers who can shoot beyond 1.5km or not. Every army has it's own way of doing things, US is different maybe they believe they could depend on taking a lucky shot. Our army doesn't, we don't need to copy other forces as long as we are keeping our country safe. Which our army does very well.

What i can understanding that if you have played some COD... MOH etc... You get at least 50% concept of these tactics...

Our Sniper training programs must evolve. Just buying some modern sniper rifles won't cut it.

Because of not having enough concept and modernization in Indian army many of the soldiers used to be killed by the Pakistani snipers who used latest AWM. Whilst India still use 1970's Russian Dragunov sniper.

It has nothing to do with evolution, every army has its own way, our way of a ‘fire-fight’ is different, we always close inn during ops, however, he US army’s ops are usually conducted from a distance. They can’t even think of ‘fire fighting’ like we do, & vice versa.

We do buy sniper rifles, ofcourse we dont buy them to shoot birds or shaadi me hawa me fire krne k liye, just like most of soldiers didnt know about 9 para and 11 para for many decades, and common people didnt know about MARCOS as untill last decade, most of the soldiers still dont know if we really have a proper and elite sniper teams or not, ofcourse everyone knows that we do have snipers to shoot at 800 meters
