On June 17, a tragic railway accident involving the Sealdah-bound Kanchenjunga Express and a goods train in Darjeeling, West Bengal, brought attention to the absence of ‘Kavach’, India’s Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system. The incident claimed ten lives. Annually, an average of 80 people are killed in train collisions in India.
In response, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reviewed the progress of an advanced version of the ATP Kavach 4.0 and directed its installation to be expedited. Although funding isn't the issue, the deployment pace is. Kavach can prevent accidents by warning loco pilots and automatically applying brakes if necessary. Despite its potential, Kavach's current implementation rate is slow, with only a small fraction of the rail network and engines equipped with the system. Accelerating the deployment is crucial to enhance railway safety.
17 जून को पश्चिम बंगाल के दार्जिलिंग में सियालदह की ओर जाने वाली कंचनजंगा एक्सप्रेस और एक मालगाड़ी के बीच हुई रेल दुर्घटना ने भारत के ऑटोमैटिक ट्रेन प्रोटेक्शन (ATP) सिस्टम ‘कवच’ की अनुपस्थिति पर ध्यान खींचा। इस घटना में दस लोगों की जान चली गई। भारत में हर साल औसतन 80 लोग ट्रेन टकराव में मारे जाते हैं।
इस घटना के बाद, रेलवे मंत्री अश्विनी वैष्णव ने ATP कवच 4.0 के उन्नत संस्करण की प्रगति की समीक्षा की और इसके इंस्टॉलेशन को "मिशन मोड" में लेने का निर्देश दिया। फंड की उपलब्धता कोई समस्या नहीं है, बल्कि इसके तैनाती की गति है। कवच दुर्घटनाओं को रोकने के लिए लोको पायलटों को चेतावनी दे सकता है और आवश्यक होने पर ब्रेक भी लगा सकता है। हालांकि इसकी संभावना के बावजूद, कवच का वर्तमान कार्यान्वयन दर धीमी है, और रेलवे नेटवर्क और इंजनों के केवल एक छोटे हिस्से में यह सिस्टम लगाया गया है। रेलवे की सुरक्षा बढ़ाने के लिए तैनाती में तेजी लाना आवश्यक है।
