Indian Scout: An Unexpected Twist Changing Everything

💭 The goal was to get a first ride on Scout before tearing it down. I had everything I needed to make it happen, but I would soon realize that something.. wasn't right.
After working on the front end to install the new triple, nothing would line up properly.
It would end in a hunt to find the problem with not great news in the end.

We all hate to spend that unexpected money, but trying to straighten those fork tubes out is going to be super tricky. I would buy the new tubes and the tools and do it right. You’ll have the tools for future jobs down the line.

I felt that F@CK. Yep. Forks bend is actually a good thing, it usually saves the frame from bending. Let’s hope.

After many crash rebuilds on various motorcycles I've come to never trust that items didn't get damaged, especially the front end. I disassemble everything and measure so that I only have to assemble it once.

man im so invested in this bike now, hope everything goes well by the end. Your filming of the whole restoration process is brilliantly done, never feel like im really missing part of the picture and your explanations about things ppl wouldnt know unless theyve worked on a indian before is spot on. Awesome video great little series going here.

I was just thinking of your Home Depot bolts vs. the Indian bolts. The triples on the Indian is aluminum and the Home Depot bolts are steel and because they’re black, they may be hardened steel such as your impact sockets. If you use the hardened steel bolts on the aluminum triples, you may strip out the threads with little or no force and you may not be able to torque them to specs. My suggestion, try the new bolts on the old damaged triples first and check the torque.

Great video, but as that triple was broken on the top that you replaced that should’ve been an automatic sign that fork would’ve been bent, but you did a great job in your analysis just took you a extra steps to see that was bent, but all signs of a broken triple snap off will tell you the fork is bent. Still love your work bro.

Mate the Allen headed screws come as a set, note it says 6 for $24 not just for 1. However, having said that to go to a bolt store you’ll find the allen screw is probably around $0.20ea or cheaper. As an Indian Scout rider it’s still interesting in following both your misadventures and successful adventures. Just a suggestion but while you’re in the front end, regrease the steering bearings as I bet there was a minimum applied when assembled.

Not true. That is the quantity you need. Not the price for a set. www.indianmotorcycle.com/en-us/shop-parts/7517/7517361/

Off topic, I hope they do a red frame edition of the new Scout Classic. The early Scouts in the 1920s had red frames. I'd like to see that return now that the Scout has a proper frame.

Was that screw price for 6? Looked like a "6" in the quantity. Maybe it takes 6 all together but you only need one and that would be $4 if you divide 24 by 6.

Hi Brandon. Just watched this and I am usually impressed by what you get done, but a sudden sucking of teeth when you mentioned the bolts. I'd check the spec of these and you will probably see the price justified to some degree. When you moved on to the fork tubes, I was shouting at the screen that they were bent. No problem until you suggested straightening them. Yikes! Don't ever try to do that. Motorcycle forks have to be perfect and the cost of replacement tubes is a small price to pay. The most you can ever do to a set of fork tubes is flatten out any stone chips if they are not too bad. This will ensure the seal will last and not get ripped up.
@BrandonBicasso
@BrandonBicasso 3 месяца назад
I don't think the price is justified. The same hardware on Chief is $5.99 a screw. It was suggested by some to never attempt rebuilding bikes or having a frame straightened. To not having the original Chief gas tank repaired. To not have the other gas tanks leaks repaired and they're both 100% as I left them. By that logic, I would have never started. Fork straightening is a thing when done correctly and if they are not terribly damaged.
@BushyKal
@BushyKal 2 месяца назад
@@BrandonBicasso I am not trying to gang up on you with Mark, and I like seeing someone work on stuff, but he is absolutely right. I was a MC Tech for 6 years and a prop plane engine mechanic for 2. When it comes to fork tubes. Sure you can straighten them but you are creating a weak point in the metal and its a safety hazard. When you mention if done correctly, sure, but there is still that weak point (think of bending metal back and forth and back and forth, it gets weaker). When you say terribly damaged, fork tubes are terribly damaged when bent. Just because something can be done, doesn't always mean it should be. You can find fork tube online relatively cheap you don't always need to go with OEM on stuff. Your sign should've been when machine shops are turning you away. If you plan on just riding the bike yourself and not selling then fine that's a risk you take. If you plan on selling you're passing that risk. At the end of the day you are going to do what you are going to do. I have been watching your videos and getting ticked off at some stuff but I have to remind myself that I was once where you were in my own garage. Its all a learning experience and you are doing a good job. But please take some advice on the forks. Price sucks but peace of mind is always better.

Mr. Bicasso please hear this! Never buy that black oxide finish bolt. In a climate controlled environment it’s fine. I you see any kind of weather, those bolts will rust like you couldn’t believe. There is a reason why correct bolts and nuts cost so much.
