When the First World War started on 28 July 1914, Britain named it the fight for democracy to get help from its colonies. Britain understood that taking Indian soldiers along in the First World War could be very beneficial for it and on the other hand, Indian leaders also felt that after helping the people who were crying for democracy, it would be easy to pressurize Britain to free their country or convince the government for this. Keeping all these things in mind, some big leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Bal Gangadhar Tilak decided to join hands with Britain in the First World War.
