I think this is the first time the north east India is covered on such a big platform. People should be more aware that north East Indian cuisine is also Indian cuisine. Thanks to this channel this will find its light 🙏
Disappointing to see that the Northeastern India haters called out in this video are still present in the comment section. If you've been watching Sonny's content for a while and all of a sudden decided what he's eating is disgusting and not to your taste, just roll off. You don't get to be the judge of what people should or shouldn't eat.
@@ShriNidhi-zu2imHa to😅Chole bhature, biriyani,Paratha khate rahe 😂 North East Assam me ye sab nahi chalta hai, specially Assam me Duck, pork, Local chicken, pigeon, goat meat ye sab common hai
@@ShriNidhi-zu2imwhat if i told ya before govt of india banned a few things of our delicacies we used to consume a lot more like turtle and turtle eggs( best delicacy), monitor lizard locally called gui ,river dolphins or so called hihu in assam , johamal( large indian civet) consumed with joha rice untill banned) i can give you a list but does it really matter we dont eat those stuff now so atleast respect what we have on our plate now if a tourist can appreciate and respect our cuisine i think you should too
North East is another soul of India.. As a South Indian i feel the connection more closer with north eastern people.. The food, culture, lifestyle not too different from people live in hill places in TamilNadu.. ❤
Tamil Nadu has the same dichotomy of strict vegetarians, and adventurous non-vegetarians, so Tamilians would be right at home in Assam. I'm a Tamil-American Non-veg from a veg family, and was surprised to learn just how non-veg Tamil Nadu is, cuz my experience had been so sheltered during visits, meat not being allowed in family households. Also, Indo-Chinese food is frikin AMAZING, so true Assamese food must be incredible. Would love to try it some day.
There are so many similarities between assamese and malayalis 1. Let's come to attire first Mekhela sador worn by assamese women is very close to set saree worn by malayalis Riha is traditonal to assamese women which is similar to neriyathum for malayali women Men in assam prefer traditional Gamosa/Seleng sador with their attire and Malayali men use a melmundu with similar embroidery with their attire Assamese bridal attire is white with gold zari work woven similar to Kerala's kasavu saree 2. Assamese ghila pitha and Kerala's neyappam 3. Assamese vaapor pitha and Kerala's puttu 4. Assamese nimokhiya pitha and Kerala's paniyaram 5. Assamese kosu torkari and Kerala's kappa curry 6. Assamese payos and Kerala's payasam 7. Assamese use banana leaf, jackfruit leaf, ginger leaf, bamboo etc to steam food, similar usage is done by malayalis 8. Assamese love ripe jackfruit and makes pitha/malpoa with it, same is Kerala's chakka uniyappam These are just some that came to my mind, there's so much more, especially the striking similarities with the languages I think i can write another 10 points on the similarities between assamese and tamil cultures ( assamese bohag bihu and tamilnadu's vishu both are new years - let's just leave it at that)😂😂😂
India's map which has been used in the video is not correct!! Please take a reference of govt of India's official websites before posting map!!Thank you exploring north eastern India❤
Wow never thought you would visit Guwahati Such an honour to have you here ♥️♥️♥️ North East part of India is very different from the mainland and lots of scenic place to explore 😁😁 hope you have a great time 💜
there is no such special mainland of india in india, india becomes from all of its main diversified states. and shares equal values. love from maharashtra.❤
As a south African, iv always wanted to go to India and try new foods like this great guy did. I'm glad he visited the locals as if it was me, I would also visit the locals. Great stuff!!!
Assamese here! Feels amazing to have seen Reboti chow mein, that restaurant is the heart for assamese chowmein connoisseurs. The diversity in North eastern food is so intense yet near about miniscule people know about it, not just North- Eastern food but the entire Indian nation is filled with diversity ( jitna diversity word use karu Kam Hain:) It feels delightful to have Sonny come to Guwahati and eat our delicacies. India truly needs its culture, heritage, food to become prevalent, high time guys.
Lmao! Reboti is the most unhygienic eatery to have food. Also the taste is degrading day by day. One doesn’t mandatorily need to romanticise everything that is antique.
What they mean mainland india must be northern India. Here in Kerala and Karnataka we eat pork, Fish curry since ages. I do believe other south Indian states do this too i haven't been to other states. Bacon have been serving in many restaurants among western foods in every part of India.
@@nkr079 pigeon, rats you can see but not dog or cat. And i will ask you same question 😂. Do you think every northeastern eat dog and cat? 😏. And even my mom used to say they had termites too. Only north indian is pure vegetarian all others parts not like that.
@@santhoshv3028 similarly you will find pigeon curry in Bihar and Jharkhand and also not all South Indian state are nonvegetarian twenty one percent people in Karnataka are vegetarian But if you people eat earthworm, cat, dog, rats, beef then of course your state is very different from north India
@@santhoshv3028 And Also North Western India like Gujarat Rajasthan and Punjab have more vegetarian population than non vegetarian otherwise all north Indian state are non vegetarian
@@nkr079 i was specifically replied to her comment on pork, i should have mentioned in my comment. Dogs and cats are a big no for rest of the India, even tribals avoid these here in South India
Assamese food is much tastier than northern or southern food, with the use of less spices but lot of natural herbs. I'm surprised how much tastier and healthier they are even without so many spices.
Each and every Indian State have a completely different culture , but saying North East is completely different from India is incorrect, Northeast is an integral part of India , and it has a culture we Indians are proud of..
In my life for the first time I tried pork and beef in North East India, I am so happy and thankful to them because without them it couldn't have been possible, till the age of 28 i never tried beef, pork, pigeon. I think we are the product of our surroundings, our mind is conditioned in such a way that we fear to try it, trust me guys just give it a try and you will never look back, thank you
Looking forward to this series 💗 loved this video . And chowmein is actually widely found in Indian , people love Chinese food here with Indian fusion. So glad that you're covering the north east side of India 💗
First 3 main dishes aren't just limited to assam tho Fish intestine is really popular among Bengalis in West Bengal and Bangladesh too while chowmin and roll are among the favourite snacks throughout India and lastly pitha is a delicious food loved by North East, West Bengal and neighbouring states and even Bangladesh too
Actually pork was there in assam since ancient times. It's not 20 years old trend. It just means people started embracing and ignoring the skeptical comments of the mainland people. And Hindus do eat pork there is no concept of haram in Hinduism. Hindus from northeast India, Myanmar, Bali (Indonesia), usa, England do eat pork. Hindus can eat anything except beef. Some hindus even eat Buffaloes or bisons. Pork is a good meat in assam it tastes really good and its neither too expensive like duck or pigeons nor too cheap like farm chickens.
Brilliant video. The weed pitha idea is something to think about. You unlocked the culinary potential of pitha manifold. Hopefully first of many episodes on Assam.
Big up to you and your team for coming over to North-east, Was looking forward to the series, ever since I heard you talk about it in JRE. Most folks don't even realise this part of India. Hope you had lots of fun and were able to show the subtleties of cusine like the use of less spices or say the use of elephant apples etc. Keep up the great work
As an Indian I’ve never seen ppl mention northeast of India be shown as much as other parts of India! Love that you are showing diverse cultures! Love from south India!
Welcome to Northeast India Sonny 🎉🎉🎈🎈🎈 Can't wait for the next episodes at Nagaland, Mizoram , Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh etc It would be worth for your channel
You know man ,Chaumin is one of the most common street food in India........ If you say you come to India a lot of time but have not had Chaumin it's unbelievable. 😅.... Anyways love from Kolkata. ❤️🩹
I am from north but trist me this north east cuisine looks sooooo tempting and there are many region across India including north where people consume pork and pigeons...
I am from Kerala, and i am alien to North Eastern cuisine because our mainstream media don't usually discuss about them. The NE cuisine looks incredible. To the people of the North East, be proud of your cuisine. Diversity in culture as well as cuisine is what makes this country beautiful.
@@sportslover8396 Don't gatekeep people's cuisine. This is a free country and they can eat whatever they want. Changer your stupid perspective. Be better!
@@sportslover8396 in kerala we eat quail meat, its meat and texture look like any bird meat... We don't eat insects but we eat frog legs(but not every one) etc
Instead of going to expensive cafes and restaurants this man decided to go totally local... Massive massive respects to you man, you've covered more about Northeast than our mainstream media that too very beautifully.... Thank you for visiting and trying our dishes, although you only tasted a few of the dishes🐱... Lots of love from a fellow Assamese
@@wolfofwealth2832 WE LOST AKSAI CHIN.... Yes we should still show it on our maps but it is currently occupied by China to whom we lost the region during the indo-china war
I absolutely love North East India... I have many Assamese friends who treated me with lovely pork dishes during my college days in Bangalore...personally I visited Assam and Meghalaya, loved the sweet innocent people there, the diverse landscapes and ofcourse the cuisine! Will be visiting Arunachal and Nagaland soon. Love from Kolkata, WB.
Earlier most of general caste of Assam didn't eat pork, snails, crabs as well as they hate tribal foods or tribal People but now slowly they also accepted and trying to say these cuisines are thier
Brilliant...so happy you are exploring the "7 Sisters" Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Tripura, Nagaland and Manipur...my love and best wishes.. to all my fellow Indians!
North Eastern Region of India comprises of eight states-Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura (commonly known as the "Seven Sisters"), and the "brother" state Sikkim.
12:00 I'd like to add that pork isn't exactly discouraged by the Hindu Majority. It's just that pork is haram in Islam and interestingly most butchers in india are muslims. Hence there's minimal supply of pork and thats the reason most Hindus don't eat pork and often develop a taboo feeling towards it
I am from Tamil Nadu. North-east food and culture looks so much closer to South Indian culture. Pork and pigeon is eaten in villages here too. A type of bug called eesal is eaten in Tamil Nadu as well.
We south indian( im hindu) we also eat beef, duck, rabbit, quail , pork, mussels, crab, fishes including shark, octopus squid etc Some peoples eat even frog legs because of medicinal purpose... But some narrow minded north indians can't never understand this... We south indian respect every religion and culture.... We also feel uncomfortable when seeing eating bats, dogs, and worms but we r ok with it... Its their culture..... 👍 Every state had their own culture believes and even languages....
Hey Sonny, huge thanks for covering Assam. The morning scenes at Uzan Bazar is the quintessential love for fish of the Assamese people. It’s the same in all the fish markets across Assam. I hope you had the opportunity to try ‘Aari maas’ or ‘Borali maas’ or ‘Bhokuwa maas’. While you’re still there I would suggest trying the pork roasted inside bamboo or pork curry with black sesame seeds and duck curry. As an Assamese living abroad, I thank you for bringing our state and food to your platform.
Hi Sonny! I'm from India & thank you so much for saying towards the end that you're trying to make the global audience (myself included) aware or redefine what Indian cuisine traditionally is. Definitely beyond Butter Chicken/Tikka Masala + Garlic Naan + Dal Makhani.
Hahaha exactly! you spoke my words lol....that's what I have been wanting to say since long.... Indian cuisine is not just chicken tikka masala 🙄butter naan🙄. It's more than that... And varies from place to place..
Thanks for visiting Rebati. As someone who studied in Cotton College it provided us with a sumptuous lunch. I really miss those days... A nice showcase of our Guwahati and Assamese dishes... Loved it...
So excited to see North-East Indian cuisine showing up on food & travel channels. It's like nothing else in India. The flavours are simple because they rely on locally sourced meats and greens and are not overshadowed by a slew of spice blends. I hope I get to see Naga food next. LOVE IT!
@@Himashree26 yea no. they be eating cats rats and dogs.. and giant thick larvae in the last video. Yea it’s their choice but my choice to say it’s absolutely disgusting
As someone born and raised in Guwahati, I learned much more from this video. It's a shame how the rest of the country looks down upon us but this is just the beginning. Thank you~
I am from Hyderabad and on a mainstream level, no body here looks down on North East, infact the image is NE being a beautiful serene place..No idea abt Cuisine though!
I am so delighted to see my region being represented especially in your channel!!!! Please do visit Assam again. Other parts of North East are just as pretty and have diversed culture and culinary options 🌸✨️
Just eat a stake you will be Dead by Hindu mobs , probably. Life and death is in God's hand but you know what I mean, eating beef will land in front of an angry pagan Savage Hindu mobs
Welcome to Nagaland in Advance. I am from Nagaland and looking forward for your episode in Nagaland. Its going to be another legendary food review show of yours. Best food review show ever. Loved all of your contents. Out here in Nagaland, the food here is totally different from Mainland india, we dont use much masala and cooking is simple yet delicious for sure with a variety of dishes, mostly meat is our main dish ingredient and you will find lots of exotic foods. Come and taste as much as you can for review to the world. Thank you 🙂. Few must have are naga pork dish, axone with smoke dry pork, anishi with dry pork, chicken or fish curry naga recipe with bamboo shoots, etc. I hope the guide here in Nagaland will give the best tour for Authentic Naga foods 👍

Good to have you back in India man! Northeastern cuisine is definitely a bit unknown and different to us mainlanders, but I should mention one thing, you will find almost the same type of fish dishes and indo-chinise fusion dishes like this in West Bengal, you should definitely explore bengali traditional and modern cuisine a bit and I can guarantee that you will not be disappointed.
PLEASE STAND CORRECTED INDIA'S MAJORITY DOES NOT PROHIBIT PORK AT ALL, PORK IS PROHIBITED BY A "NOT SO MINOR" MINORITY IN INDIA. PORK IS RELISHED IN PUNJAB, HARYANA, UP, PARTS OF MAHARASHTRA, AND MANY MORE PLACES I MAY NOT KNOW.

Fish bladder has a unique texture and is quite delicious, but it must be cleaned properly! I believe that’s the 2nd intestine Sunny tries around the 6th minute mark. Cooking it may vary from region to region, but we usually cook it in fish soup and it’s amazing 👍
That chow mein wrap reminds me of the yakisoba bread sandwiches you find in Japan. Only they use something like a hot dog bun and the noodles are yakisoba and not chow mein. Interesting how similar things can be in places so far apart.
@9:52 in Andhra Pradesh rita is called poongadam. Hindus generally eat pork but we dont farm them so they live in garbage in search of food, also boar 🐗 is a delicacy in south these social media generation is soo conservative and lack basic history knowledge if u come to towns people are generally more well versed and not abruptly woke. we will appreciate the diversity.
Thanks for covering this part of India and showcasing it. We have a lot of so called food vloggers but they are not over with butter, cheese and mayonnaise. Will follow Shyamalima now as I haven't seen anyone promoting such regional food. Will be looking forward to the series of North east India. Way to go.

Just so you know 72% of India eats meat of some sort , the vegetarian's are usually found in the north and western India . Telangana the state i come from is 98% meat eaters.
Thank you for visiting Guwahati and Assam. I am a big fan of yours and I am glad you loved the local cuisine and your ending comments was icing on the cake. I loved the content and you tried to cover the major delicacies in one single video but my only regret is you should have tried Maas Tenga (Fish Curry) instead of the fried fish. It's unique and it's loved by all. Looking forward for your rest of the Northeast Journey. Have fun
Omg! I’ve watched you for years. I’m from north east India and I’m so happy you’re here. I just don’t believe it. We’re a very small region and it’s so unbelievable to see you here 😮 and show us in such a big platform.
Pigeon meat ,mutton(goat meat) used to be the most common and widely consumed meat back in the day. While duck meat was consumed in special occasions/festivals, such as 'Uruka, na-khuwa etc. I have notice a lot of brahmin family still only consume mutton and pigeon meat. Chicken farms didn't exist back then there's still some sort of taboo among some of the older people about eating chicken. Once chicken became common it replaced pigeon, duck meat etc due to its availability and lower price. But in recent years the meat industry has seen a boom. Pork and Duck meat is regaining their mainstream popularity and hopefully soon pigeon meat will make a comeback in the market as well. The main issue with pigeon was availability & small size - they have more bones than meat in their body. But there are some new hybrid pigeons that are slowly making their way into the market which are more chunky and easier to prepare. *The traditional fish cuisine of Assam is very diverse and has a lot of significance in traditional assamese culture, more so than meat. But I am not knowledgeable enough to make comments on them
Thanks a lot for visiting my state of Assam. I hope our Axomia and rest of the Northeast culture gives you a lot of good experience Edit: that round pitha is called Tel Pitha (তেল পিঠা) tel means oil and pitha, which is self explanatory. The cylindrical one can be either Naricol Pitha(coconut pitha) or Til Pitha, depending on what you put there. The wrap is made by grinding rice.
