My fashion fantasy is that the suits, clothing styles and fedora hats from the 1930's and 1940's suddenly come back in style and never go out again lol. Best two decades for practically anything, in my humble opinion lol.
The 30's and 40's were the "best decades for practically anything"?? Seriously? Wait till you learn about these little things called the Great Depression and World War 2...
I remember seeing Crystal Skull and being frustrated during the waterfall scene and how his hat didn’t react to the water as it did the previous films. The hat is as much of a character as Indiana Jones is. It’s something that needs to have attention to detail.
Thank you for the support. The Crystal Skull hat is much more of a thicker felt than the Raiders hat. It's a mixture of a thicker felt and the Director wanting the hat to mostly look Heroic in adverse conditions. That's my take on it. All my best.
On the theme of the Indy hat ... my dad was born in 1922 and I was his first daughter and I was born in 1945. As early as I can remember in 1947, my father always wore that Indy hat with the wide brim and the same chestnut color. These style of hats were the costume of the day. He had 3 brothers and a father and they all had the same hats, my grandfather's was black. I have a picture of all of them together and they look like gangsters, but of course they were not. That was the look of the day. Then around 1970's the wide brims went out of style, so did the felt and as much as my father could keep his clean, it began to fall apart and he had to get a narrow brim hat that faked straw. It looked awful. By the time the Indy movies came out and that hat came back to fashion, he was already suffering from ill health and didn't go out much, otherwise I would have gotten him one. Instead, I bought one that imitated Indy's and I wore it myself. It is stunning. I still wear it on occasions and I get the compliments. They all call it my Indy hat. Your collection is excellent. You know so much about all the pieces, it's amazing. Keep up the good work.
Thank you for the support and what a lovely insight into the life of your family. Thank you for sharing the memory. The fact that they all had pretty much the same hat is cool. All my best to you and thank you again. Joey.
@@joespropsandartifactstour6731 What a true pleasure it was to hear from you. I nev er expected to get a reply from you. You're super Joey. You made my day.
Great gear. You mentioned that you don't know the purpose of the metal disc on the bag. The bag was designed to be worn on the chest for quick acess to the gas mask. The short webbing strap went over the neck. To stabilize the bag, the piece of string that should be in the tiny center pocket was fastened to the tiny loop on the right side, then strung around the wearer's back and wrapped around the metal disc to fasten it.
Fantastic collection! A bit of info for you regarding the black disc on the side of the gas mask bag: There is a loop on the opposite side that soliders would tie a cord to and stuff it down in the small side pocket. When they would use the mask, the bag would sit in front of them, causing it flop around when they would run. To prevent this, they would take the cord from the pocket, wrap it around their chest, and then wrap it tightly around the black disc several times to "tie off" the chord. This kept the gas mask bag flat to their torso while they moved about. Also, the gun Indy used in ROTL as a S&W M1917 Hand Ejector II model, .45 - not a .38. Not that anyone would even care - that's a great gun you have and is close enough in my books!
Thanks for all the info. I had forgotten about the 45, lost in time but thank you for bringing it to the surface, as with other factoids. All my best ! Joey.
The metal disc on the gas mask bags are for a lashing cord that ran out of the inside of the bag, from that tiny pouch in the center, wrapped around the body of the soldier and was then wrapped around the disc multiple times, like you can do with envelopes that have a round (usually red) circle on the outside, to secure them, but so they can also be quickly undone and removed without having to untie the cord.
Thank You, another watcher told me that too but thank you for letting me know, just in case it hadn't been answered yet. I know those envelopes, I have a couple of Box Files that work that way too. All my best.
I love how hard core this guy is with the thoroughness and all of the great weathering. I plan on getting an Indy costume sometime in the distant future and hope one day I can get a collection like this together.
One reason for the hat’s warped shape in Raiders comes down to the material. The original hat was made from rabbit fur, which is much softer and floppier, whereas later hats were made from stiffer, higher quality beaver
Thank you. I knew the difference in floppyness, ect, to that of a modern replica, but did not for certain know why. Thank you for that, it helps. All my best.
Great presentation Joe and also kudos to your thorough explanation of each and every piece in such a short amount of time. Since my hat is your "baby" I guess you have two kids now😊👍🏼
Ah ha, thank you. Was that the, "Temple Of Doom", screening or an event in Leicester Square? I have only just seen this comment and so I am replying as soon as possible, now ! Thank you for the support and view. All my best. Joe.
Brilliant explanation of everything i've wanted since 1981 but only had to deal with whatever I could get my hands on aside from the gas mask bag my grandparents had and I just ordered a wested jacket so unfortunately i'm a bit old to run around having the same kind of fun I used to because old people can't do that anymore but it was a lot of fun watching so thank you for reminding me how much fun it was....oh wait isn't he doing a new movie...guess I need a hat...
Sadly, I would also need a Last Crusade Hat to compliment the tie :( I have a few vintage Black ties, should I ever go down the route. Thank you for your kind words and support by watching and commenting on these videos. All my best to you.
That’s quite an incredible collection. I really love my Coyls pants. I only have one pair and they are the best fitting of all the replicas I’ve tried. It’s a shame they don’t make them anymore. And for the fun of it I also have a pair of authentic officers pinks trousers from the. Which the independence were designed from, As you know.
Brilliant and thank you for the support. Yes the Colyes are great pants, perfect for Indy and the era. 100% accurate to the Raiders pants I would say on many levels. All my best.
The disk on the side of the gas mask bag is for winding and tying the string that went around your chest to hold the bag in place. If you look on the opposite side of an original MOD issue Mk VII bag, near the bottom you will find a tiny open pocket barely large enough to insert your little finger where the string was kept and the opposing end secured until actually donning the mask during an attack. Remarkable presentation, interesting how the fascination continues after all these years!
Thank you for that. I am happy to say that I think my main Indy bag still retains the string, I am happy only because a few screen examples still have it also :) Such a Small detail that makes me happy :D All my best and thank you for watching and commenting. Joey.
the circular thing on the gasmask bag is a keeper for winding the bags securing string around....when in use the bag is worn slung across the chest..in order to stop it flapping about, a length of string is secured to one side of the bag, it passes through a hole mounted on the original bag sling then goes around the wearers back to the other side and is wound around this circular fitting to secure it....staybrite or anodised alluminium came out in 1953
Thank you Sir for the information. I knew of the bags original use being a collector of WW2 and WW1 items but the disc, no, I was not aware of that at the time. Stay Bright, thank you for putting a date on it. All my best and thank you for watching.
Excellent video mate, there are varying opinions on the length of whip Indy carries, but the general consensus of opinion was that he carried a 10ft, but used an 8ft such as in the Cairo market fight scene, if I’m not mistaken, your crease & coral whip has a steel cable in its construction which would allow you to do swings with it, the guy who made that was Dustin Damrel, im assuming he carried the 10ft because it looks more whip on screen, keep those videos coming 🙂
The "Indy swoop" was simply formed by turning the hat a little to the right, which deforms the brim a little. You then redo the center crease & pinches, bearing in mind they will be a little off center with regards to the interior of the hat. Trying to get the "swoop" with a brim that wants to be symmetric won't have the natural looking flare but look overworked
I see now, you are talking about the, "turn". The swoop I refer to is what happens to a hats brim when exposed to extreme wet, the brim will stoop down lower than its manufactured level, which is what the Cairo hat had as well as the turn. All my best.
@ Joe's Props and Artifacts Tour - Looking great bro!!! I have an AdVintage Harrison Last Crusade in Rabbit and two of Wested's jackets!!! (Both are Last Crusade, one is the Standard in Lambskin and the other is my Hero in Pre-Distressed Cowhide.) I'm working on a screen accurate Last Crusade costume for my job literally from head to toe.
Incredible look! The last one had the best crown, the Indy hat’s crown is almost a 10 gallon 😂 if you ever want one done by the guy who has had every Indy movie hat in his shop call up Baron Hats in Los Angeles and ask for Mark. He shaped and aged most of the hats for the movies and has restored the originals from Raiders. If you go to the shop ask to see the book in the safe, it’s the names and the hat sizes from Harrison Ford to Elvis Presley.
I do Indy too.. you take it to the next level! I have pretty much the same same things. Thursday boot diplomat boot instead of 405’s. Half the the price and very comfortable. I have the Swiss salt and pepper ruck sak instead of German Ruck sak. I have the Wested jacket too. I own a Akubra Federation 4 hat that I wear every single day. Todd’s Costume pants and Victor Tella Roo hide 10 footer whiskey bullwhip.
Absolutely spot on!! I love how you did the wethering on the outfits. If i might suggest one cool little detail you can add: The Indiana Jones initials inside the hat. But that is nothing compared to how you nailed the outfits. Looking forward to watching more of your video’s, dr. Joenes
My original Herbert Johnson hat did indeed have the, "IJ" on the inside and it's a detail I havn't considered putting back in. Until now that is :) Thank you. Thank you for your kind words and support. All my best.
Hello Joe! This video demonstrates your expertise in everything Indiana Jones. I just received my Herbert Johnson Poet model fedora, made with the rabbit fur/felt. This is the same model used in Raiders, as I understand it (unless they used beaver). My issue, which you perhaps could help me with, is stiffening the fedora. It is really, really soft, and can lose its bashing and creasing without much handling. If you have some tips on stiffening, they would be greatly appreciated. Yes, there are lots of hat care tutorials on youtube, but something tells me your experience with this iconic piece of Indiana Jone's wardrobe would be most valuable. Thanks!
Thank you for the support. The only thing I can suggest is a LIGHT spraying of starch to stiffen it up. Having said that, I would test it on something first.... To be honest, best not to that, it might make the fibres go funny. As you are well aware of, the Raiders hat was very soft, softer than many replicas out there. As for how well the original held its shape I do not know. Ford did seem to be able to mold it into many contours and behind the scenes footage shows the hat ( in my opinion) to be very malleable. All my best and again- DO NOT try the starch !!!
I love coming back to this video. You mention painting the dirt on to your SoC hat. How is that done? Glue and dirt? I have a Cairo hat that I’m constantly applying dirt to and it’s like the felt just purges itself of impurities. You try to keep something clean, and it can’t help but get dirty, but damn, trying to keep something dirty and it can’t help but get clean 😂
Brilliant video! AFAIK the US military never used Staybrite, which is that nasty aluminium (or whatever it is) the British army used in the 1980s (not sure of the dates it was used). I've seen many US army buckles that were issued coated with a lacquer the soldiers called "QM". Of course the first thing the soldiers would do was apply "QM remover" to get them back to the plain brass, which they would polish with Brasso as they always had done. I think QM remover is sort of like nail polish remover.
Thank you. Interesting on the, "Stay Bright". I wonder what the US equivalent was as the buckles certainly changed. It's probably just a Gold chrome effect coating...?
Awesome collection. I’ve seen many of these type videos but no one seems to mention or show Indy’s pocket knife which was seen in Raiders. No man is fully dressed without a pocket knife and a handkerchief.
Thank you for the support. I do mention the pocket knife in another video, I never use it for Cosplay so that's why it's never really with the kit. All my best to you.
@Joe's Props and Artifacts Tour - Fun fact: Thomas get's his ribbons from the same supplier who provided the ribbons for Herbert Johnson!!! So, in a way owners of AdVintage Fedora's also own a Herbert Johnson (albeit $500 cheaper!) Just a side note Joe, Wested's jackets don't deserve to be thrown in the dirt. Their works of art bro. If you are looking at picking up a third jacket from them, they just launched their Legacy Hero collection (Raider's and Temple so far) still waiting on the Last Crusade jacket but i'm ordering it as soon as it hits the website!!! Just visit Wested's site and search Legacy!!! Fortune and Glory!!!
@@joespropsandartifactstour6731 My pleasure! I'm going to get started on saving up for my screen accurate Last Crusade Cosplay as soon as I get back to work and scheduled. Fortune and Glory!
Awesome video Joe Edit: Also at 11:29, those metal things were used for a little string to hook around your waist. This prevents the bag from flopping and twisting around while walking or running.
Got that :) Many have told me since and I used it as such on a later bag, last year while carrying a mask while traveling (Covid). All my best and thank you, Joey.
@@joespropsandartifactstour6731 Also the 40th year anniversary is coming up. I've already made my cosplay, thanks to your video because it gave me wicked ideas. :)
Very nice de-stressing, and love the collection. You wear all of it very well. May I ask about painting the dust on the hats? How'd you apply the dust? with oil? I have an Indy jacket - It came to me new and perfect, but after some sandpaper, car oil again and again, it looks a lot better - but may revisit it with the dyes you mention. Good tip about the elbow weathering, and love the repaired bullet hole idea - gotta do that. Oh Man, the Machette...yeah!
A great video! And what a superb job on the weathering of all the items!! I have a question about the trousers you are wearing. I myself am starting and indie set and I have been going through the different options for trousers. No one on forums or on the net actually mentions if any of the pants offered by either makers are high waisted trousers as vintage, dress trousers would be fitting. I understand most people don't like high waisted trousers these days, but that's what I'm actually looking for to be accurate. How would you say the Wested pants fit? Thank you in advance for your reply. All the best !
This is an amazing video and the whole 25 minute lenght went by in a breeze, so entertaining. Also, dont worry about the whip. 10 feet is the proper lenght for the whip, when its just hanging on your belt. Other whips, ranging from 6 to 16 feet were used for the action scenes :)
@@joespropsandartifactstour6731 That's right,i'm on the Indygear forum, great informations there,my fedora are Steve Delk ,jackets from BillKelso and Tony Nowak, and bullwhips from Joe Strain, this collection toke me years and patience to collect ..but always admire others fans collection in any items, gears, action figure,etc..cheers!
@@jorey4565 I was one of the guys that payed for a Steve Delk hat and never received it. I know he was very ill but we sadly had to fight to get the money back. I wish him all the best mind.
This is really cool. I love how you got into really good detail for these reviews. I have a question tho. How did the whip stay on the holster throughout the movie? I have tried many whip holsters and none of em wanna keep the whip on.
Thank you for the kind words. I know in some cases the whip was held together with some kind of twine. There is a picture of ,'Short Round', holding the whip and you can see it bound. Mostly though, if you watch Harrison closely, you can see the whip becoming uncoiled through the scenes.... All my best. Joey.
I also coil the cracker around the whip too when being worn. It doesn't mean I can get the whip out and use it fast like Indy but it really is the only way to keep it from becoming uncoiled...
@@joespropsandartifactstour6731 I made a whip holster that holds a whip in place all the time out of duct tape. The way it works is if the whip tries to get loose the holster will get tighter with still being able to have the whip at quick draw.
A bit late to this video but thanks all the same. I'm wanting to put together an Indy costume for the odd cosplay thing and this is good stuff. As an aside, I was talking to a guy about my W&G MkVII 1943 gas mask bag and he said that the metal disc was used in tandem with the string in side pocket on the opposite side as a belt by wrapping it round the metal disc (apologies if this has already been said below).
Epic collection! I’m hoping to get started with cosplaying him as well! I’m looking at a custom advintage hat but now that you mention it, that one will be so precious…I’d want one I can wear everywhere and not worry so much about. Is the advintage Harrison model a good option perhaps as a factory made one? Thanks mate!
Hi, I know I'm a bit late to the party but amazing video! Love the idea of the same jacket all the way through! Can I ask a little advice? I'm looking to get my first Indy fedora and have pretty much decided on Advintage. Herbert Johnson were my original pick but everyone keeps saying Advintage is better quality so I'll trust it. I just can't decide what colour to get, preferably I'd like a mid brown like your ToD hat or the colour seen at the end of the film when they return to the village, mid light brown but not raiders pale. Would you say that the True Sable would meet that or would it be too dark? It's just the pictures on the site vary wildly in colour for true sable so thought I'd ask some advice. P. S Have you seen the new Wested Legacy range?
Thank you for the support. When I bought my Indy hats there was no such discovery of true sable, mid Brown, ect, the hats just came in the colour we all thought it was, Sable. Any fading will happen over time, the sunlight will fade the Dark Brown of the hat to true Sable anyway. There are a few great private vendors out there.. Screen Capped (Brian Lalonde) and Andrea Tognarelli are the best to go for, as well as Advintage Fedora. Certainly try those people out for real accuracy and choice. When it came to Wested I was happy with the Hero jacket. Now, there is so much more choice to go for. All my best :) Joey.
@@joespropsandartifactstour6731 brilliant thank you! So helpful and informative. I've watched the video god only knows how many times now! I was wondering what the laws are regarding the bullwhip in the UK? I'm also UK based and always wanted one but am unsure if I'll get nicked for it y'know 😂
Thank you for your support. A whip is a piece of Cattle farming equipment and it isn't classed as a weapon. There are no laws as far as I am aware and never should or will be I imagine. I have had Police watch me on many occasions using the whip. Not a word uttered... All my best. Buy a whip. Use it. Be safe. Have people stand over 12 feet away and not facing you when you are using it and all should be fine. When starting it's advisable to wear safety goggles and a wide brimmed hat to protect your face.
Wow. What attention to detail! What weathering techniques did you use on you Raiders shirt and hat? I like the logic you used of how dirty a tomb would be.
Thank you Sir :) The weathering is all acheived by paint. This shirt can survive countless washes and still look filthy :) All my best and thank you for watching.
The annual income of a 1930s -1940s, college professor was not that great. Hence, Indiana Jones was always open to invitations for travel and archaeological digs and treasures. Professor Jones hated Nazis and what they stood for, which was world domination. The Indiana Jones moves always made me think he was a scavenger and a cheapskate.
The Dirty shirt I am wearing was an old MBA costumes one. The Temple Of Doom shirt was a Wested one I destroyed. The clean type shirt is a What Price Glory shirt. The trousers are mostly Wested. All my best to you and thank you for watching.
Loved this, thank you! Putting together an Indy costume for my birthday next autumn (want it to be a costume party). Got a lot of info here, however I’m even more unsure of which route to go when getting the pieces. Obviously Alden405 is a no no for me at 600€ per pair, rather adventure boots from Wested it is. Fedora - I’m hoping to get a Herbert Johnson one. Perhaps in Raiders style… The trousers, gun belt etc I’m still undecided. Overall I’d like it to be a bit mix and match.
The main thing I never do is hold the hat by the pinch at the front, only handle it by the brim. The hat will naturally taper over time as I have been told but not as much as if handled by holding the pinch. The Golden rule is only handle the hat by its brim. All my best. Joey.
I wear a lot of layers in my lifetime, my favourite being a WW2 Overcoat. As we know, it literally is built to go, over a coat, so it is useful to layer up. I never thought of Indy's jacket in that way. Good take on the character as we always assume He mostly visits hot climates. We assume ! I love that idea. Thank you for the support.
