The story of India is one of profound and continuous change. It has been shaped by the dynamic of migration, conflict, mixing, coexistence, and cooperation. In this ten-part web series, Namit Arora tells the story of Indians and our civilization by exploring some of our greatest historical sites, most of which were lost to memory and were dug out by archaeologists. He will also focus on ancient and medieval foreign travellers whose idiosyncratic accounts conceal surprising insights about us Indians. All along, Arora surveys India’s long and exciting churn of cultural ideas, beliefs, and values-some that still shape us today, and others that have been lost forever. The series mostly mirrors-and often extends-the contents of his book, Indians: A Brief History of a Civilization. Bibliography appears below.
EPISODE 3: THE MAURYANS AND MEGASTHENES
In 327 BCE, the Greek warrior Alexander of Macedon invaded the Punjab. He was forced to turn back after his army suffered heavy losses in fighting Porus. Soon after, the Greek-ruled Seleucid Empire arose west of the Punjab, and the Mauryan Empire to its east, with its capital in Pataliputra. This produced a freer flow of ideas between India and Greece, as in science, art, and philosophy-and a fascinating account of India by Megasthenes, the Greek ambassador to the Mauryan court. Megasthenes described the huge city of Pataliputra, its wooden homes, walls, and watchtowers; its bureaucracy, taxation and laws; its giant army; urban lifestyles, elite fashions and social norms. He noticed the emergence of endogamy and early castes in the Aryanized groups around him, and he saw Brahminism as more patriarchal than Buddhism.
Two generations later came Ashoka who presided over an expanding agricultural state, often at the expense of the forest peoples. Still, his public embrace of non-violence in midlife was significant and likely unique among the world’s emperors. He converted to Buddhism and sent missions to spread it far and wide. His public edicts can be seen as the earliest expressions of Indian secularism, in which the state attempts to fairly patronize all major religions. From the Mauryan period, we get monumental stone art and stunning sculpture, such as of Sanchi and Bharhut stupas, some with clear continuities with pre-Aryan forms and aesthetics.

@@anantkris6350 if you just read RSS literature everything will seem like a bunch of lies. That's how wahabism almost replaced islam. That's how Christ's real teachings were misinterpreted by the roman catholics. Develop a scientific mind that can discern truth rather than calling facts as lies.

@@kvishnup Wahabism is a wrong word. The correct word is Salafiyyah/Ahl al-Hadith. And its Sufism which borrowed cultural practices from Hinduism that replaced Islam in the Indian subcontinent, not Wahhabism. For example: 1) Kaala tika to remove buri nazar, 2) Baraat in Weddings, 3) Dowry 4) Red dress of bride, 5) Joint Family System 6) Not giving property to daughters 7) Divine power of Saints 8) Both Hindus and Muslims visiting Dargah such as Ajmer. Sufism almost replaced Islam. *Salaf/Ahle-Hadees* are bringing back the real Islam practiced during the times of Prophet Muhammad and his companions.

This historian is pouting a narrative that is not grounded in facts. He talks of brahminism as a religion at 16:35. Patently false. Brahmins were just one varna of the 4 or 5 that were prevalent and revered for their texts and teachings. The words "Brahminism or Brahminical" are used interchangeably with Hinduism or a Ancient Vedic religion by these leftist historians to suit their agenda and ideology.

@shaz131 yes and I see some problems with calling it fact based: 1. No sources have been quoted or mentioned in the description 2. Sources would mostly be either historical accounts by Indians or foreign travellers, analysis by writers/researchers, historians etc. 3. It would or might include the bias of the creator of this video. So when we say it's fact based, I was wondering on what basis are we calling it fact based.
@shaz131
@shaz131 7 месяцев назад
@@youvideozz I agree with your 1st point Again this is something you might able to cross check by yourself. Accounts by historians and writers presented as it is is what the video does so then we are contemplating a bias with the writer of those time which again is a longshot and debatable. History as such isn't a 100% scientific discipline ... it only relies on what is written or orally transmitted and then crosschecked several times over by other sources. This is how it is different from archaeology which relies on scientific evidence to arrive at estimates.

But alot to be updated, eg sanskrit and varn system was not at that time, current hinduism is a extension of buddhism mahayan with lots of changes which was influence by other forgein ruler who ruled india, like bhakti movement was influenced by sufi movement and varn vaivastha was added by adi sankracharya and ramayan and mahabharat are mythology... Which was devloped in a long span of time, and some of its event was influenced by real event.

It also just occurred to me that the entire playlist might need to be reversed. Currently, the most recent created video is placed at #1 in the playlist. I recommend it be the other way around. That is, intro video to Ep1 as #1, then Ep1 as #2. Then the three intros to Ep2 as #3, #4, #5 followed by Ep2 itself at #6. And so on. What this will allow for later viewers is that when they select the playlist and start at #1, they will view intro to Ep1 first, then Ep1, then the three intros to Ep2, then Ep2. If they have autoview set, then the videos will nicely sequence in correct, logical order. As currently set up, not so. I realise you might want to make the latest video as the most accessible in the playlist, and so put it at #1, and pushed the rest one place deeper in the list. But this is not a good idea the way YT video playlists are set up. All the best.

Pages of history must be kept authentic and factual and truthful as they were recorded for today and for future generations. I know it is true that in first freedom fight of India in 1857 Raja Gwalior fought with British and his army killed Jhansi ki Rani near Gwalior.My ancestors fought with Rani Laxmi Bai and most or all of them got killed. So proud of them.But this part has taken out from history books ? True or rumor ?Maybe you would know. The Moslem rulers for period of about 5 or 6 centuries will be made blank ? Beautiful narration with balanced view of Indian history pertaining to early Buddhist period. My long standing puzzle is this: Why there is such a open frontal feminine nudity in Buddhist sculpture? Even in the Asoka sculpture of Sannati-Kanaganahalli (K'taka),the queen as well as attendent women are depicted nude! Was it the aesthetics of those days? Was it specific to Buddhist art?Did it not offend Bhudist Shramana sentiment? Till date I have not read any article on this issue. Can some one who knows the things clarify.

Excellent, except for the ads. For those of us who are not from a Hindu background, the sexualized images are really quite disgusting and distracting from godly behavior. The God of the Bible purposely required undressed stones for his altars and proscribed graven images. Can you see how this serves to direct attention to the unseen God, and repentance and rather than admiration of lustful gods? Imagine what it means to do, as Jesus taught us to pray, "on earth as it is in heaven," coming from these two contrasting world views. This explains much difference in the cultures.

At one point you say mauryans were shudras and other point you say brahminism as extreme. At one point you say that prostitues were protected from harm at other point you say the society was patriarchal in a strong way where as history says otherwise. You say caste couldn't cross each other and mauryans were shudras. While the Chanakya was brahmin himself, he helped a shudra in defeating Nanda dynasty. While you are saying brahmins kept their knowledge to them ?? Are you confused?? While Chanakya could become king himself he chosed to follow teachings. I guess you are extremely confused.

Excellent episodes. One reason a much more homogeneous Buddhist society collapsed and a compartmentalized caste based Brahmanical society evolved was due to the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases. There were no antibiotics to treat them and the free mixing of people across the continents made the spread of STDs more prolific. This resulted in keeping 'purity' among sections of society divided as castes. Sections of societies or castes that suffered more such diseases were relegated to the lower levels in the societies and led eventually to the creation of 'untouchables'.

@@sandeepjohari2023 It is a historical fact that nearly 97% of the indigenous South American population perished by the diseases brought by the Europeans who invaded South America. But Indian societies survived such catastrophe even though there were invasions and trade from outside. Probably, caste compartmentalization of the societies helped them to survive when there were no antibiotics or vaccines for diseases. I have to be clear here. It is history. I am not advocating any caste distinctions of the past to continue today. In fact, even today there is vertical and horizontal caste mobility among the population.

@thevoid7460 17 дней назад
A fair question. Explicit sexuality in art appears in many parts of the world, springing from many indigenous peoples elevation of fertility and procreation as the basis of life. So that’s not new. What matters is the kind of depictions, or the aesthetic involved. One would have to look at the culture of the pre-Indo-European people in Greece to understand the sources of later Greek sexual art. It seems to me that there’s also a fair bit of misogyny and patriarchy in Greek depictions (Zeus raping women is commonplace), which may well owe more to the IE substrate.

This series is helping me fully appreciate the history of North and Northwest India including regions that are now in Pakistan

16:42 Brahminism is no religion. It is an ideology, referring to the domination by Brahmins. There is a religion Brahmanism, which is chronologically between Vedism and Hinduism.

Brahmins persecuted Buddhists, because Buddhism didn’t believe in caste ( Buddha was a Kshatriya) the caste system is a kind of apartheid system. Buddhism was eliminated from India, but it influenced Hinduism. Vegetarianism and non violence come from Buddhist ideology , not from Brahmins who indulged in animal sacrifices.

@@yashagrawal88 well, it survived in Ladakh, also remote parts of northern India, and Nepal, where Brahmins had no influence. Buddhists converted to Hinduism to survive . Doctor Ambedkar converted to Buddhism, so did a good number of his followers, who were and are still suffering caste discrimination, but that is a revival of Buddhism. Buddhism flourished in China, Korea, Japan etc, but it had mostly disappeared from its place of birth.

Indian history is mis guided when we try to fit vedas before buddist mahayan... As there was no sanskrit before mahayana sect... All university was buddist including taxilla, nalanda, vikramshilla... There are no hindu temple before gupta period... A lot to be researched.

There hace 16:40 there has been a lot of evidence already that Ashoka had converted to Buddhism before Kalinga war. Why are you still stuck on that old rhetoric of conversion post Kalinga. Find the video selectively biased in some other aspects too like the outreach of mauryans not in rural areas which is false and the major subcontinent being not in direct rule. Also the kitchen rule looks a bit off. When chandragupta who was his grandfather already was a Jain follower the animal killing in kitchen would have been already low so don't need to whitewash Ashoka who instead had performed fratricide at will

@@ShubhamTiwari-mu8do Not true. The widely-accepted scholarly claim that Ashoka converted to Buddhism after the Kalinga war is supported by Ashoka’s own Rock Edict #13, which states the chronology rather plainly: “Beloved-of-the-Gods, King Piyadasi, conquered the Kalingas eight years after his coronation. One hundred and fifty thousand were deported, one hundred thousand were killed and many more died from other causes. After the Kalingas had been conquered, Beloved-of-the-Gods came to feel a strong inclination towards the Dharma, a love for the Dharma and for instruction in Dharma. Now Beloved-of-the-Gods feels deep remorse for having conquered the Kalingas … Now it is conquest by Dharma that Beloved-of-the-Gods considers to be the best conquest” ... -Excerpt From: Ashoka: The Search for India's Lost Emperor, Charles R. " A sheep's side of stories will never be told in a country where everything is controlled by wolves." In your second episode, you said something like Aryans came, plundered resources of Dravidian, asserted aryan dominance & practiced discriminative customs, took their ethnic women to reproduce, brought systems like sati etc.., After all these undeniable facts you still brand it as "ARYAN MIGRATION". Not "ARYAN INVASION". Wow. That's clever & Cunningly use of ethos, pathos , logos to wipe out horrors that fall on Aryan (Your) community. Your intention is not to tell unbiased history but tell biased history in unbiased demeanor. There's only one way to put all these. Aryan invasion is not a one time event. It's an event of Aryans plundering (resources, culture, even achievements in history) happening until now.

okay maybe he worded it SLIGHTLY wrong. but generally invasion is when army is involved, so technically in the case of aryans it wasnt a true full blown invasion but it also wasnt just migration. hes not denying the wrongdoings but i don't understand what are you trying to imply. you cant undo any of it and its far beyond the point where you can differentiate an aryan from an indigenous indian..

The talk is quite informative even though it is general in Nature. The talk has directly jumped from Vedic period to Mauryas. The talk ought to have thrown light to Gautam Budha and Mahaveera ( Budhism and Jainism). Then only the episode about Asoka, the Great will have more glory. Same is with the upoming talk about Shatavahanas of South India. You are congratulated for having shown our glorious past in the correct perspective when attempts are made to create hatred and division in our Society by projecting our past history and also by distorting it....
