Yes, the training goes near to torture but don't forget this are military special forces on par with the Navy Seals, GIGN or the SAS. Also, these guys are volunteers, both in doing military service and doing the test/training for the KSK; these guys knew what they were/are signing up for. ^^
0:40 The masks are for the protection of the KSK soldiers involved, who are also on active duty. Otherwise they could become victims of hostage-takers or their families, as they also operate behind enemy lines. Their operations are often secret and are sometimes very dangerous.
In German, there is a formal and an informal word for "you". When they sit in front of the commission at the end, it struck me that the superiors used the informal "Du". No Sir, Mister or anything, it's almost as if they called him "bro". And that's the biggest compliment, you are one of us now!
I was just a private (corporal) in the German army. Once, and luckily only once, we had a 36-hour exercise. We hadn't slept for just over 36 hours and after that I was completely exhausted. All I wanted to do was sleep and that's what I did. What the soldiers, even those who didn't make it, showed in the video was great. I wish the German KSK all the best.
I live in the area where they held this Hellweek. This is public land (partly) and the woods are in the Black Forest. I've hiked there often enough myself and it's often very uphill and downhill. So even as a normal hiker with little luggage, it was exhausting!
Note how not a single one of the selection staff screams and hurls abuse at the men. German and in a wider sense European special operations forces want personnel who have enough intrinsic morivation to complete their tasks. If you need somebody to motivate you besides yourself, special operations forces aren‘t for you. As an aside, the KSM (German naval special operations forces) are treating their aspirants exactly like this, too. Another thing: The chairman of the final selection committee is the then-commanding officer of the KSK himself, a brigadier general. He addresses the selectee in front of him with the familiar "du" form of address, which between an NCO and a flag officer is extremely rare. This shows the man that he is part of the family now.
The Legion is not a special forces and I would argue that the training of the KSK or other special forces like the Seals from the USA is tougher. The KSK or the Robben would 100% have no problems with a legion exercise. The reason why the Legion is considered very tough and good is due to its long missions, including in war zones. With the ksk and the seals, the missions are rather short, in and out again, but guaranteed to be fatal.
