I lived just a few blocks down from this and remember the gunfire, and the buzz of everyone telling each other what was going on. Hilltop and to an extent most of south Tacoma were run by the hilltop crips. I was in elementary school during most of this and I remember my mom making sure I wasn't wearing any of the wrong "colors", the whole Tacoma public school district eventurally went to uniforms. If you went to east side or deep south Tacoma you had some mexican (before ms13) and some blood gangs, but it wasn't even a competition. The gang's crime and drugs got worse until the mid-90s. The local city leaders and law enforcement were at a loss at what to do. Eventually, the city brought in a gang task force from So Cali to help Tacoma set up their own task force and things slowly got better. One of the things they did was to make certain streets dead end streets to discourage drive by shootings, so the car with the shooters didn't have a way to escape or turn around and drive by the place they just shot up. By the late 1990's into early 2000's the gangs were a joke of what they once were. Now the city has a whole new set of issues that they are again ignoring to deal with, until its so bad there will be a tipping point where the city will have to acknowledge said problem and come up with a solution.

Crips and Bloods ruled prisons in the late 80's through the 90's. Both still exist, but are way calmer now after law enforcement figured how it works. They were at war with each other for years, until they figured out that team work makes the dream work. Personally, I hate all gangs.

Crazy you guys are reacting to this, I grew up in Tacoma. Sadly there are many other stories of crazy things that happened in my city

When Rangers are off duty, they have to play by the same rules as every other citezen.

In 1989 it was a different world as I can attest to. It's too bad that the police at the time didn't take it to these gangs to begin with but instead seemed to only patrol the good areas, which grew these other neighborhoods and riddling them with crime.

They should make a movie of this.
