In the past, Native American and Indigenous roles haven’t had the authentic portrayal they required. This group of actors and casting directors discuss their own experiences on why it’s important for native roles to be filled by native individuals. These stories should be authentically told to audiences through lived and real experiences.
Moderated by Russell Boast (President, Casting Society of America) and Elizabeth Frances (Actor, Love), the panel includes Q’orianka Kilcher (Actor, The New World), Kimberly Guerrero (Actor, Longmire), Sheri Foster Blake (Actor, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), Jason Gavin (Chair, WGA Native American & Indigenous Writers Committee), Rene Haynes (Casting Director), Angelique Midthunder (Casting Director), April Webster (Casting Director), and Tokala Black Elk (Actor, The Bygone).

Well I think that the secret recipe for success with native portrayal brought about in a most profound way is to Tapp in to the right script/ story line in combination with the right cast of gifted actors. I do believe they are there already , on the scene, however I do believe its time for a storyline with those actors as the lead/ protagonist in combination with the right project /storyline that is going to catapult native Americans on the Hollywood map. It needs to be powerful, unapologetic, passionate, yes contemporary! Very important filled with conviction and endearment all at the same time. I am sorry if I write too much, but I just feel like it's time for first nations to use the Hollywood podium as an avenue for expression in the most heartfelt profound way. Love to you my first nation's peoples.

PROBLEM! In 2022 and after, there are 3 Indigenous Americans actors in the USA Red skin, NEGRO skin and 5 dollar indian. Hollywood is only focus on showing red skin actors and 5 dollar indian actors. We need to ALSO show there are NEGRO skin indigenous American actors. There are Indigerous American who did not live on the reservation but public housing/ghetto. They are still indigenous

I can think of Randolph Mantooth. He is half Native American and half German.

What is the size of the Native American consumer market? Is this being taken into account by Hollywood people when deciding on Native American projects?

I don't care how we're portrayed in movies. It's just movies. I define my life with real life. For me, there's real social ills that affect natives that need to be addressed. I go to movies to escape reality and not sit there and think is this role fitted for the actor's ethnicity. It's called suspension of reality for a reason. I think it's a desperate attempt for a fight that isn't really there. I think it's just acting. Actors act.

Well I have to agree that you know who are native is just by looking at us doesn't matter what tribe. When I was out in San Diego I was talking to these homeless people and this man asked me you're native aren't you ? Are you an you're Indian? And that would really bother me and I would ask why do you think I look Indian explain that to me. I don't know you just look Indian he would say well what do you mean I look Indian explain that to me and then I would say never mind and he would say well what's your name and I would say Gina bear fighter and he would laugh and say aha I knew it! So I agree noone non native could truly pull it off but the question is could they really play native part believably well , No, really I don't think so I mean no actor that is not Indian that ever played it Indian part ever satisfied me to believe that they was an Indian plus they didn't really look like us anyway so yeah it does matter 😉
