Making a hunting-weight recurve bow.
Bowmaking was passed down to me by my father and uncle. Many of the tools I used in this video are hand-me-downs. Some tools I sought out and purchased. My knowledge has been accumulated from my family, community elders, friends, archery books, museum research and online forums. Today, there aren’t many Native bowyers alive that pass on these teachings. I want to keep what I learn alive for my future generations by sharing it.
+
+
This bow (65in) is longer than our traditional chest-draw bows which were on average 50-55 inches. This is to account for my height and contemporary corner-of-the-mouth draw style. While I used osage orange, a beautiful bow wood, our traditional preference was oak because it was very accessible. This video and my craft is not intended to depict the most traditional or ancient method, but rather to showcase the way I do things today as a living Native crafter. So much of modern bowmaking is an amalgamation of styles, tools and methods from different cultures and I appreciate every one of them. Some days, I craft using no metal tools, and other days I make things using power tools.
+
+
The handle design I used in this video is JD Jones’ (of pinnacleselfbows) signature handle wrap style. He does a much better job than I did, so go check him out if you’re interested in the design.

I'm a native of New Zealand and unfortunately, as I grew up, I slowly became disconnected from my Māori roots, this was amplified when I lost my dad (who was Māori) to depression, as he was my siblings and I’s strongest link to our Māori heritage. We were raised by our New Zealand European Mother in a very white household (to no fault of my beautiful mother). But now that I am 25 years old I regret not staying connected to that part of me. My name is Māori, my skin tone and features come from my Māori blood but sadly I was stuck between not being white enough to be white and not being Māori enough to be Māori and so I became lost. This year as a part of my first year doing a Bachelor in Counselling we studied the Māori experience of colonisation in New Zealand and we had to do our own portfolio on our heritage and it was through this that I’m slowly rebuilding a relationship with my Māori side, which has been so exciting. My hope is to learn more about the beautiful rich culture and language. It’s amazing to see someone who is still very much connected to their heritage 😊

I've built one bow from white oak and was proud it didn't explode, the folks on the primitive archer forum were helpful during tillering, as was the "bowyer's bible". That's a great little community by the way, every traditional bowyer in the world, and there aren't many are keeping a tradition alive that was lost nearly everywhere.
