The art of printing and dying with natural dyes is a complex process with origins in ancient civilisations. The most coveted of the dyes is ‘Indigo’. Its name comes from the Greek word ‘Indikon’ meaning ‘Indian’.
A rich source of Indigo dye is the tropical plant ‘Indigofera Tinctoria’,’Nilini’ in Sanskrit, which has many medicinal properties & is used in Ayurveda. Extracting the dye is a multi-step process involving fermenting the leaves and oxidization of the sludge.
Natural Indigo dye in environment friendly but faces the challenge of chemicals dyes and mechanisation. Wearing natural indigo clothing keeps one directly in touch with nature while sustaining our precious traditions and artisans.
