Let's cover indirect free kick rules in soccer.
An indirect free kick is awarded if a player commits a foul usually not against an opponent.
Fouls by field players that will create an indirect free kick are:
· Playing in a dangerous manner
· Impeding the progress of an opponent without any contact being made
· Using offensive or abusive language or gestures
· Preventing the goalkeeper from releasing the ball from their hands during a drop kick
Rule 1 for an Indirect Free Kick - You are not allowed to score.
If you do score without a player on either team touching the ball, then a goal kick is awarded.
Rule 2 - In nearly all instances free kicks are taken from the place where the foul occurred.
Also, there can be indirect free kicks inside the penalty area, also known as the 18-yard box.
Rule 3 - The ball must be stationary and the kicker must not touch the ball again until it has touched another player.
This prevents the free kick taker from just dribbling the ball.
Rule 4 - The ball is in play when it is kicked and clearly moves.
Just tapping or stepping on the ball is not enough to be considered a touch.
Rule 5 - Players on the opposing team must be at least 10 yards from the ball.
A recent rule change is that if at least 3 players from the defending team form a wall, then all attacking players must remain at least 1 yd from the wall until the ball is played.
Rule 6 - You can pretend to take a free kick to throw off your opponents.
But keep in mind that players in the wall from the other team might start creeping closer if you do a fake shot or fake pass.
Also, an opponent who deliberately prevents a free kick being taken quickly may receive a yellow card for delaying the restart.
To make it easier, think about it like this, if a foul does not involve contact, it is usually penalized by an indirect free kick.
Also, here are some other fouls by the goalkeeper that can result in an indirect free kick:
Controlling the ball with your hand for more than six seconds before releasing it
Touching the ball with your hand after releasing it and before it has touched another player
Touching the ball with your hand after it has been deliberately kicked or thrown to the goalkeeper by a team-mate and be sure to subscribe
