Highlights of the Equestrian Individual Jumping Finals during the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Equestrian sports featured on the Olympic programme of the Paris Games in 1900, with jumping events, and were then withdrawn until the 1912 Games in Stockholm. Since then, this sport has been on the Olympic programme with remarkable regularity.
Until 1948, only men competed in the events, as the riders had to be officers. This restriction was lifted in 1951, and, since the Helsinki Games in 1952, women have competed with men in the mixed events. They competed first in dressage, then gradually in the other equestrian events.

When things are done humane manner and the horses are well looked after I think equestrian is a amazing sport. If a sport involves animals, their will always be someone doing something mean, but that's not all equestrian riders. And they certainly deserve to be called athletes. The amount of skill and effort it takes to win a equestrian event is unthinkable, especially at Olympic level.

Ok ok, I'm not trying to be an internet trainer, and frankly, I'm not against bits, but that first horse was showing OBVIOUS signs of discomfort at that giant bit, especially after the rider was yanking on it's mouth after the jumps. That's all I have to say

4 or 5 feet?? If you can jump 5 feet, then that's high...have you competed in Grand Prix or Rolex Kentucky? I wouldn't be surprised if you have. If not, you should seriously consider it...I think they're jumping about your height. If you only jump for fun...then you should definitely try competing (if you want, of course). I do eventing, and I recently moved up to the preliminary level. I've only jumped 3 foot 7 inches for XC, which feels pretty advanced to me, but your jumping height puts mine to shame lol.

Pure Equestrian Ooh, congrats :D I'm an eventer who just moved up to Beginner Novice (not quite as exciting, I know) and I'm hoping to try Training before I turn 18. I'm 14 now, so I'll just stick to watching Prelim riders like you for now, haha

@Julia Horses have no choice. If they refuse, the owner will try again. And again. And again. Forcing the horse. Using large bits, whips, spurs. Refusal is never an option. Horses have no say.

@@joligra No, actually false. As someone who rides horses at a barn who is known for bits and spurs and crops etc, we NEVER force horses to jump. If they refuse, we don’t jump them. It’s really simple. Besides, some horses get scared of the jumps. You can tell if a horse really has a passion for jumping, they’ll see jumps and they will get all excited and immediately try and run over to the jump, horses do not get forced to jump over things.

Agh that looks painful landing 1200 pounds on two small hooves from such a high hight. Yeah the horse has the ability to jump like that but it doesn’t look to pleasant to do over and over and over again from jumps over 4 or 5 feet!!!

Wild horses are more in danger than domestic horses. Wild horses get sent to slaughter and get hunted, and even worse die in battle with other horses. I would much rather see a horse being ridden.

@@clovers4zane I see it in a different way: Let‘s compare it with humans: You can put a human in jail (then he/she won’t be in danger to be killed in traffic or on a plane or in a train accident). Or be free and just enjoy your freedom. In freedom, your life might be shorter, but much happier. Many horses are used in competive sports were they have to suffer from pain for years. It is not unusual that horses broke their legs or that they had behavioral disorders from the abuse and pain. And most of those horses will end in a slaughterhouse as lasagne. There are only a few good examples like animal sanctuaries which allow a horse to be a horse and not a machine or robot just for human entertainment. Only a very few horses might enjoy such sports, but most of horses were mistreated - to entertain humans.
