Indonesia is building a new, $33 billion dollar capital city on the island of Borneo. Jakarta, Indonesia’s current capital and economic center, faces a variety of issues, including land subsidence, pollution and congestion. Because of this, in 2019, the government decided to relocate the capital away from Jakarta and build a new capital city in the province of East Kalimantan in Borneo. Named Nusantara, the new capital city is planned to be a digital smart city surrounded by a lush tropical landscape. It will bring many key benefits to Indonesia but will also have some issues and drawbacks. With construction having started in 2022, the first phase is planned to open in 2024. By the time its completed in 2045, it will host 1.9 million people and generate millions of jobs for Indonesia.
