First of all, apologies for the lady’s answer for not being straightforward. Secondly, so many factor plays into role here about ground water. Historically (as she have mention) Jakarta isn’t with a reservoir in mind. We do have big freshwater pond but we cannot say its a reservoir due to its high pollution. Then, most people not a fan of the pipe water due to its cost, and locals believe that pipe water is not as clean as ground water.

How can it not sink that area should be a mangrove forest but now it is a very dense settlement. This is because the population in Jakarta is too large.

No mention of water privatisation in 1990s to 2000s to two foreign companies Thames and Lyonnaise?

Simple conclusion is.. Jokowi after visiting M'sia 🇲🇾 recently. He wants to make Nusantara as Indo 🇮🇩 administration capital like Putrajaya and in the same time maintain Jakarta as Business capital like KL of M'sia 🇲🇾

indonesia has 274 million population as of now, half of that population resided in java island, and half of that, that resided in java, live in jakarta. combined that with skyscrappers here and there in jakarta and massive amount of cars and overuse of ground water (equifer), combine all of that, and you have the picture as of why its sinking. the city itself earn 3 awards itself : the most populated city on earth, the city with the worst traffic jam on earth and the busiest city on earth.

Some sinking cities are looking to pump water under high pressure back into the ground underneath them. Or in the case of Venice just to elevate it.

Do what the Japanese in the east tohoku region do. Build 15 metres enbankment / dykes along the lower points of this city to ward off the incoming sea water. Remember this area is close to earthquake zone. These tall dykes can stop the tsunami and save lives.

The problem is, the development is concentrated only in Jakarta/Java so a lot of people are coming to the city to find good opportunity. You need to find ways for some people to move away in the city to decongest it and allow it to breathe. Overpopulation is the main reason not just the pipelines.

Jakarta and greater Java island is on the center of the ring or fire, the land cannot sustain more growth and more expensive, hence newer development is needed in solid land of kalimantan.

I think it is perfectly reasonable to move the administrative body away from an agglomeration that cannot handle its expoentially growing problems. It allows to free land for step-by-step restructuring by shifting areas, making better use of them. A reset or relaunch also allows for improved structures in the new capital. With today's technical capabilities of modern societies, this is not such a big deal... Good move, if you do it at an adequate scale.

Jakarta should allocate funds and / or development costs to support the creation of housing for slums first, proper pipelines, sewerage systems, waste management. Rather than Keretapi Cepat Indonesia China (KCIC). However, it's too late to turn back now. The Jokowi 's government lifted a ban this month on the export of dredged sand that had been in place for more than 20 years, in a move it claims will bring in badly needed revenue but that activists say will further degrade the country’s vital marine ecosystems.🤑🤑

There's still hope for Jakarta , with especially water resources from outer Java it'll take a huge effort in cost and determination to make it happen.

the sinking is caused by a lot of drilling of water wells, the govt didnt plan for how to provide piped water to its ppl.. there isnt proper planning to build reservoirs or desalination plants are expensive..

Is it possible to build desalination plants for the people to drink and inject either fresh or sea water in to the ground in Jakarta to stop and perhaps even somewhat reverse the subsidence of the land? The choice of fresh or salt water for injection would depend on whether the current wells would be retained or abandoned as the salt level would render them all but useless for anything except perhaps fighting fires or making salt for cooking. After all if pipes are to be installed the current wells,which are poor quality water already, would not be in use anyway. Could this slow or stop the sinking faster?

The problem was actually created by the Dutch when they developed infrastructure during colonization of Indonesia. The way they constructed hardscapes that didn't allow the water to flow naturally destroyed the land and created this issue. Vox News did a RU-vid video and story on it. Indonesia really should sue the Netherlands for destroying their land in an international civil suit to get adequate compensation to fix the problem.

The previous jakartan governor, Basuki Cahya Purnama or Ahok, had planned to build giant sea wall in a shape of a giant eagle on the coast of jakarta and already began the construction. This giant sea wall will create a fresh water lake on the coast of jakarta for jakartan people to use, so they no more pumping water from underground that let the underground water refilled naturaly. Sadly the next governor, Anies Baswedan canceling the program for his own personal political ambition

It's not so simple. Indeed, the ground in North Jakarta is sinking at a dramatic pace, locally up to 10 cm per year. This is mainly caused by compaction of the alluvial ground and the withdrawal of groundwater by thousands of small wells, as well as a combination of both factors. The effect of the rising sea level is secondary. The government took the increased flooding for a reason to relocate the capital city from Java island to Kalimantan, where the rainforest is being cut down to make space for a new, "green" capital, for which the government is seeking "investors" to build the infrastructure. Interestingly, new artificial islands are being piled up from sand along the coastline of North Jakarta, only miles away from the fast subsiding areas. The real estate on these artificial islands, barely a meter above sea level, is being converted to gated communities and sold to potential buyers or investors. An alternative to relocating the capital city could have been to move individual ministries and departments to the 27 provincial capitals, thus distributing administrative activity, employment opportunities, and regional development more evenly across the entire country. In view of the digital age and the internet, this "declustering" appears much more realistic than a few decades ago. People have voiced concerns that the fate of the new capital might be the same as Abidjan, Naypyidaw, Putrajaya, and other botched attempts to move a city's capital.
