Indoor growing just got fun! Join me in growing hot chili peppers indoors. In part 1 we're going to be germinating seeds of the Carolina Reaper (worlds hottest pepper) and Ghost pepper seeds (Bhut Jolokia)(which rank just under but pretty close to the reaper pepper on the Scoville unit scale. I've grown lots of peppers in my outdoors garden over the years but never grown them indoors so this will be a new experience for me as well. Join me and let's learn how to grow pepper plants indoors together.
I'm excited to try out the new Viparspectra XS series LED grow light and the Mars Hydro 27x27 inch grow tent. This should be a lot of fun and I'm aiming for a huge crop of peppers at the end.

Perfect timing for me, all my 2020 babies are now just ticking over nicely and I could do with a new propagation project. As my wife will testify I consume vast quantities of hot peppers so it’s doubly perfect, so looking forward to getting started with this; I’ve been doing some late fuchsia cuttings indoors for a while now so I’ve got the whole heat/light situation working nicely in my “play room” although I’m guessing I’ll need to crank things up a little for the pepper seeds. Thanks so much for this Mike, I’m looking forward to the follow-up video in due course.

Wow, this is so cool, just like you said Mike, 3 days in the fridge, 30 minutes in room temperature Earl Grey tea, shallow sowing, 80 Degs F with heat mat and light AND hey presto, just like you my first 2 or 3 pushed up tiny sprouts at 4 days. Today is day 5 and 20 out of 49 have sprouted. This is such a joy, thank you so much Mike!
@MikeFloutier
@MikeFloutier 3 года назад
Quick update, having started 49 Jalapeño seeds in an Agralan Plant plug trainer on 13 Jan, in 4 days 40 had sprouted and in 12 days were put into small clear plastic cups. Within days roots appeared and by day 20 they had 3 sets of true leaves. I decided to re-pot again but had to wait for new lighting. I graded them Div 1 & 2 according to apparent development and potted the Div 2 (“rejects”) into “5” pots. Today, day 27, all have 4 sets of true leaves. What I have noticed, interestingly, is that the “reject”, now in bigger pots, have overtaken the “chosen ones” in size and are looking healthier. Definitely looks like a vote for bigger pots. The new lights arrive soon and then I’ll put the Chosen Ones into 1 gallon pots; hopefully they’ll re-overtake the Rejects. Thanks so much for your very encouraging videos Mike!
@MikeFloutier
@MikeFloutier 3 года назад
Looking forward to an update on your Reapers Mike! Mine (Jalapeños) have grown faster than I expected. I separated them into 2 classes according to how they were doing and potted on the “rejects” into 5” pots and the “chosen ones” into 1 gallon pots. As a result I experienced a big increase in the demand for lighting area and a few days ago finalised my new lighting rig. I’m keeping a good eye on moisture levels, (having hopefully learnt my lesson) BUT I have noticed that quite a bit of the new growth (4th and 5th pair of true leaves) are growing upwards and curling at the edges. I understand this may be caused by my 1150w LED lighting being too close to the plant tops (was around 6-8”, although I had thought it was more) so I’ve raised it to around 15”.
@MikeKincaid79
@MikeKincaid79 Год назад
@@MikeFloutier Thanks for all the updates! I know this is a year old but glad you had so much success. How did your peppers do in the summer? I've definitely learned that the LED lights are very intense and must be raised up to the top of the tent. Anyway, glad to hear of all your success!

First, you don’t need to refrigerate. Second, you want the cover bent closed for even warmth until germination. Third, heat mat at 80 degrees. You will have germination within 5-7 days. Keep plants in container until 2-3 true leaves, then transplant. Add slow release pellets for constant slow feed. Liquid feed is good for off on hunger best as compliment.

I overwinter the Reapers I got from Ed Currie indoors due to zone 5 weather and short season. I would plan on no more than 4 mature plants if you keep the light turned up and without severe pruning. They can easily reach 6 feet tall and three feet wide outdoors during their second summer. If you keep trimming the tops off of them to strengthen the stems, you could probably squeeze a dozen or more in there. If the peppers will eventually go outside and experience wind, topping is almost required due to branch weakness from being indoors.
@MikeKincaid79

@MikeKincaid79
@MikeKincaid79 3 года назад

@justin1730
@justin1730 3 года назад
You can use 4x 12" square fabric or plastic pots, but cover the soil with plastic sheeting to act as indoor mulch. The plastic allows the fine roots to grow all the way to the surface to maximize nutrient and oxygen uptake. People acknowledge benefits of mulching outdoors, but tend to ignore the practice when growing indoors. The plastic causes the medium to lose moisture more evenly, making it easy to avoid over-watering. By far, the easiest way is to plant right into a bag of potting mix. Put 4 bags of potting mix in the tent, and cut a small X into each one to plant into. You do not need run-off holes because there is no rain to over-water them. Fox Farms makes nutrient-rich medium that probably won't need fertilizer until they are growing fruit. It is a little pricey compared to some other mixes, but any good mix should do. Proper ventilation is crucial to the plants if you are not forcing CO2. You will also want 1 or 2 small, PC size fans for moving air inside the tent. The small fan stays on at all times, even in the dark. Without a small circulation fan, the vent fan will pull air through the tent in the path of least resistance, and leave poorly ventilated areas in the tent. Are your peppers photoperiodic, or do they auto-flower? Some plants require long or short days to fruit.
@MikeKincaid79
@MikeKincaid79 3 года назад
Peppers aren't photoperiod so that's not a problem at all. I will decrease the light when it gets closer to fruiting. Thanks for all the ideas. I especially like the one about just cutting the soil bag and planting directly into it.

Great start! I have grown Bhut Jolokia ghost peppers for three years, Carolina Reapers for the past two years, and a pepper called Sepia Serpent for two yea rs. All three are great! Actually, the Reaper is the hottest EDIBLE pepper, but not nearly as hot as the hottest pepper, which is not edible; it could kill people and is used for other purposes, not for eating. By the way, Sepia Serpent is listed commonly at 1.5 million SHU, so significantly hotter than ghost peppers but less hot than Carolina Reaper. The Bhut Jolokia has given me ripe peppers as late as Christmas, under grow lights indoors, here in Manchester, NH, zone 5B. This year I am trying to keep my pepper plants alive through winter. I have a 3.5-yr-old jalapeno that starts bearing fruit much earlier in the summer, so maybe I can get more out of my hotter peppers by keeping them alive. As to the comparison of Bhut Jolokia to Carolina Reaper, the former is only about 1 million SHU, whereas the Carolina Reaper is 2.2 to 2.6 million SHU, and the higher number is not a mere straight line comparison hotter; it is geometric progression or something like that, if I understand it right. Anyway, Reaper is more than twice as hot as Bhut Jolokia. Try the Sepia Serpent. They not only are chocolate-colored and the size of handballs, but also are much fruitier in flavor than either of the others, to me.

Hey Charles, I appreciate the comment. I've grown jalapenos, anaheim and other lower heat peppers outdoors since I was a kid, but these are the hottest peppers I've ever tried to grow, and the first time growing them indoors. So far, so good. I really appreciate the info and am interested in what you're doing to keep your peppers alive through the winter. Did you bring them indoors under grow lights or are you just keeping them in a more protected greenhouse or shed? If you click on the link in the description to Mark's channel, you'll see he loves growing them to and is overwintering his in a greenhouse that he just built. Anyway, these peppers sure are a lot of fun to play around with when the weather turns and gives me something to do indoors. I'm a little nervous about trying the Carolina Reaper once they fruit but I think it's going to have to happen eventually. Thanks again and good luck with your peppers.
@charleswilder2985
@charleswilder2985 3 года назад
@@MikeKincaid79 I cut them back by at least half, keep them chilled and with minimal light, basically dormant, and water them only a little (about two cups) each week. It worked for the jalapenos, but so far not for the superhots. I am trying harder this year, with the superhots. They become very lignified, but still may break under load of heavy fruiting, so support the load with stakes. Peppers indoors really attract aphids, so I have to spray them almost every week with Neem Oil and, alternating, Safer Soap.

I disagree. The Carolina Reaper is the hottest pepper in the world, even in 2022. No other pepper is hotter. If so, its old wife tales of peppers not being edible. If you differ, give names of "non-edible hotter peppers". I'm curious to see if I can be proven incorrect.

Hey mike huge fan here, i have a question for you but its tottaly unrelated to peppers. Its about figs, i am revieving some cuttings in the mail of three varieties but i am wondering how far i can stretch those cuttings. Hoe many nodes do i need for rooting figs? If you have the awnser please let me know?
@MikeKincaid79
@MikeKincaid79 3 года назад
Thanks for your support! When it comes to figs, they will root so readily that you can sometimes get away with 1 node per cutting that is only an inch or 2 long. That being said, your best and most reliable results will be from cuttings that have multiple nodes and are 6 to 12 inches long. The longer and fatter the wood, the better off you'll be. The bigger cuttings have more sugars and moisture reserved in them and so they have a bigger buffer when it comes to time. Lots of room for error with the bigger cuttings. If you spent a lot of money and really need them to root then I recommend going with long and thick cuttings. If you've got plenty of material to spare and they were cheap them you may want to experiment. Maybe this would be a good video idea.

Wouldn't it be more power efficient to have the light really close to the seedlings but with the power turned down?
@MikeKincaid79
@MikeKincaid79 3 года назад
You're the winner, Marty, LOL. I've been waiting for someone to ask that question and you're the first. Yes, it would be more energy efficient and I was originally going to do that but I decided to raise the light and crank it up to increase the heat in the tent since it's winter and the ambient air is cooler in the house right now. Thanks for asking!
@MartyStrong
@MartyStrong 3 года назад
@@MikeKincaid79 Makes sense, although I wonder since heat rises perhaps it raises the ambient temperature a lot less than heating from below with the heat mat? I've sprouted a few seedlings in the last couple of weeks with the seed mat set to 25c using a heat mat thermostat. Once they sprouted I took them out into the regular ambient temperature of about 21c under some really cheap IKEA lights and they seem to be doing pretty well. During the season I found my outdoor plants grew pretty well in the 20-25c range as it's hot enough, but not over hot, so I'd imagine the indoor plants would be alright without worrying too much.

Humidity tent and heating pad really speeds up the process. You should try the Scorpion Pepper. Better all around than Carolina Reaper . Very hardy with bigger yields.
@MikeKincaid79
@MikeKincaid79 3 года назад
Thanks for the recommendation. Since posting this video, I've had multiple requests for that pepper. It must be a popular one. I've already sought out a source for the seeds and will probably get some to grow here. You've definitely got me interested in the bigger yields and the hardiness.

The pepper institute of New Mexico has t to them . You get dozens from each plant. Each pepper has dozens of seeds so you only have to do once . If you want I can send you some on the house.

That's a tough one. If you're not against chemicals then I recommend mowing them all down with a tractor and then spraying with weedmaster or something similar. Otherwise it will take many years of pulling them up every year until you get all the roots.

Yeah, but he would have to pick his fruit under-ripe like the other youtubers. It makes me cringe when the other youtubers need to pull with both hands to pick a fig, just so they can make a video.
