Thanks to Justin and Aram for this footage. Very helpful. I recognise I have a problem with hip rotation which causes me to hunch at the catch. I must look out some exercises to improve my hip flexibility.
Really nicely explained. I row for almost a year now on a cheap magnetic rower, I try to do it 2-3 times/week in the morning, I have a lower back pain and I thing this video helped me understand why. I will put on practice the advice, correct my positioning, the movement mechanics on this machine is very important, otherwise you will get injured. Thank you!
Hi Aram. I find the explanation of the round back problem with the on screen tools really helpful. Still trying to figure out how to put this in words when coacing without a screen handy. One thing that made me think while I was watching the video is the question of going faster BUT where? My training philosophy is that going faster on a boat is the objective but some might just want to erg. If the objective is "boat" then there comes the matter of "HANDS" and backlean at the finish. That's why so many ergers pull the handle to the chin and have terrible angles in their hands instead of finishing at the sternum with flat wrists (which incidentally will also make the arms move away from the body). In Justin's case he ends up using just a few fingers on the handle. In a boat he'd catch a crab every time. I don't know what Justin's objective is. But erging with the handle going so far up will create bad muscle memory. He needs to decide if he wants to be faster on the boat or the erg. Both are fine, one just needs to know. And YES. Fixing the back will make him faster on water AND the Erg. Thanks again for a great video that made me think on how to make myself better.
I had/have very similar problem to this during my time rowing in college. Could his lack of flexibility in his ankles also be contributing? I noticed he’s wearing lifting shoes with about an inch and a half heel, this is so that he can push through his whole foot but it’s sort of acting like a training wheel? Without these shoes he wouldn’t be able to get his shins to 90 degrees while keeps his feet connected, and he lunges at the catch to make up for the lack of flexibility through his ankle?
Ok. So which off the erg exercises do you suggest he should put focus on? He needs to build a strong back and core. The way I see it, his legs are to strong for his upper body.
I dont have a concept2 rower at home 😒 Gyms are all in lockdown. And there is no 2nd hand anywhere, have asked around but nothing yet. And a new one I cannot afford. Help!!!
