May try and seed some cut-and-come-again baby greens directly into a cut open potting soil bag in the rest of the cold framed space beside them. I was wondering; When planting Parsley seeds indoors, do you use the overseeding method? How many seeds per starting container. I start mine in smaller pots, not the little cells. I have watched many of you seed starting videos and just seem to miss parsley starting from seed. I use your method of sterilized Jiff + worm casting with pre-moistened soil and watering from bottom methods as you suggest in so many of your videos. You are so good with your videos and your continuing to experiment and update us with what your new finds are. This is so time-saving for novice like me and so appreciated. I am so very concerned about my family's food supply with C19 problems in the US right now and do not want to make mistakes in the garden as it may be what we have to eat for a while. Thank you again for your time and efforts which are exceptional.

Thank you Gary! I have a couple of questions. I searched your videos for companion planting and I've found the one about cilantro/peas so far. Firstly, do you believe/follow it and, excluding flowers and herbs, can you give your input and maybe make some more videos on the vegetables alone. Especially with the size of your garden now. It's easier for me to decide on companion flowers and herbs. Veg, not so much. I'll be growing in 3 raised beds (8x4) including: brocc, cabb, collards, hot pepp, egg plant, beans, tomato, squash, zucchini, and possibly corn and cukes. Thanks!
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 4 года назад
I believe the theory but in practice it just doesnt work effectively for me. I found peppermint oil spray is great for masking scents and repelling insects. Ill talk more about the garden size. But if you have the insects, the companions might deter them a bit but they always seems to find their targets. You are in Zone 7? Excellent! Me too! So you posted on February, 21st, and I assume that is when you shot that video (more or less?). Now, your seedling looks like they are already fairly advanced. Knowing that the last frost date for zone 7 is probably during the first half of May, there is still more than 2 months to go. Are you anticipating this to be a problem considering that your seedlings are already quite large? When would you typically start seeds for the plants you are showing in this video? I just discovered your channel and I like it so far. :-)

Hi Gary. I basically have followed your plan for seed starting including boiling the water, the worm casings, the grow light station and everything is working great. Seeds are coming up. I see you have a few greenhouse videos and this is where my question comes in. I have a greenhouse but am starting my seeds indoors. I am in zone 6. Should I move the cold weather plants to the greenhouse after a few weeks? I have heat in there but don’t use it. Do I need heat or can these grow on their own once the seedlings are healthy and thriving? Today is Feb 9, I planted the seeds last weekend and live in CT. Thank you!

NVM. I think I found the answer in another of your videos. I put them outside for an hour a day to acclimate them to the cold and sun and then can move them to the greenhouse. Can’t thank you enough for all your wisdom and advice.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Thanks ; watched already several of them. But I wander the specific growth conditions you used for the cabbages you are presenting in this video. I already tried 6500 K/4550 lm 12 hours expo - 8000 K/1300 lm 12 hours expo & 9000 K/1100 lm 12 hours expo. I noticed that after +/- 15 days of exposure in these different light conditions the leaves started to fade & dry out. I'm trying 9000 K/1100 lm 10 hours expo (4 to 6 inches wide) on 3 new cabbage plants that emerged on Feb the 25th. For the moment they seem ok... It's really tricky for this species and I noticed the same pattern for turnips plants.

Hi. I have learned so much watching your videos! I was wondering what plants you think attract the most pollinators. I had an issue last year of not having many. I was thinking about trying to start basils and herbs now a little early for zone 5 so they would flower sooner? I have plenty of space. I would like to have stuff to put in as early as possible so when my vegtables start flowering I'll hopefully already have more around. Thanks!

Hey Mr. Gary, I have been following your videos for the last three seasons. Thank you! I had such great germination and growing last year. However, this year hardly any germination and VERY slow growth. I use your seed start mix recipe. We have lights. I even purchased all new seed in January thinking there was an age issue. We don't grow indoors. We have a greenhouse where we use heat lamps for cold nights. It's Texas, so the greenhouse can get up near 100 at the peak of the day, even in Feb. Do you think we are having an over heating issue?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 2 года назад
Glad to help. I am not sure but high temps can harm germinated seeds with those high temp swings (if getting passed 100). If the seed starting recipe is new to this year that might be an issue but shouldn't be. I really dont know. I would buy a different seed starting mix. Just a bag. See if that an issue by doing 2 flats. And can the greenhouse vent during the day? On the other side, maybe the heat lamps arent keeping them warm enough and they are just slow. But I am guessing. I have my seeds in a un heated greenhouse, but on heating mats. Do I still need to harden off before I put in the beds?

As long as the greenhouse panels let UV rays in, nope. I now have an Amazon Influencer's Storefront. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. You didn't over thin that one...it didn't have anything in it! I was wondering, can you replant the ones you're thinning? Or do they not like their roots messed with?

Ah... thanks. Not if you tug them out but if you gently break up the root-ball and pull them apart you could. Please visit my seed and garden shop at www.therustedgarden.com for all your seeds, seed starting supplies and organic oils. Thanks!

I took my 2 week seedlings out for 1 day in sun then they all died like they got damping, any idea to avoid this?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 3 года назад
Well how long were they out? If they grow inside and were out for more then a hour in full sun... it will kill them. They have to slowly get use to sun's UV rays. @@THERUSTEDGARDEN Thanks for the reply, they were out for about 5 hours, had previously been in the conservatory without full sun so sounds like the problem

I do and I forgot to plant them in this batch. They can go like 6-7 weeks indoors.

Can you please do a video on watering seed starts rather than seedlings? So like with smaller seeds I water from the bottom, but within a day or less the top (where the seeds are) is dried out and the bottom is wet. What can I do?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 4 года назад
I water them the same method. The tops will dry faster as seedlings mature but moisture stays in the bottom of the cell. Just more frequent bottom watering. Please visit my seed and garden shop at www.therustedgarden.com for all your seeds, seed starting supplies and organic oils. Thanks!

A friend and I both have problems with mice. I have set out the sticky traps but I haven’t caught anything yet. Any suggestions for a repellent or ??? I do have a cat but have to keep the plants in a separate room so the cat doesn’t destroy them.

SUGGESTION: There is no way I'm going to remember all that, and trying to take notes didn't work. Sooo, why not make a chart, laminate it, so it doesn't curl with the damp air in the mudroom, and sell them to us for $9.99.
