The outdoor is the winner. The fact that it was more crunchy and substantially more flavorable & spicy is a clear indication of higher nutrient density.
very informative video! I was interested because im growing outdoors only! in South Texas it would be a shame to not take advantage of the sun for once!
Great video guys! Regarding the more purple color in the outdoor grown batch, did you happen to track what the overnight temps were during the grow period? I’ve been fooling around with lowering temps for radish, mustards, kohlrabi, and other microgreens that have the purple and red color. I’m finding that they exhibit more of that nice coloring when the temperature is lowered to 60-65F overnight. Any thoughts?
I had some Rambo radish that started out strong but then began to falter 5 days under the lights. I put it outside on the front porch that evening and just dismissed it. The next morning I noticed that it had rallied to the point that I actually brought it back inside underlights, and it continued to grow and do fine until the day I harvested it.
This is the same for the gsc thin mint cut , when the Temps are lower the flower produces an amazing purple leaf that just creates a visual masterpiece on top of the absolute phenomenal taste & overall legendary medicinal properties
Greetings from Oregon! I’m grateful for the information/education I’ve gotten from you both; you are the most professional source I know online and beyond! Could you please comment on the details of your outdoor MG grow?; environment, ,covered:no cover, etc? Also, re top watering...? Throughout the grow period? How do they not collapse, mist? Thank you.
several things add to color. The sun has EVERY color band ALL the time. The outdoor trays looked a bit shorter because they didn't need to stretch to get the light they craved. They were satisfied. however, Temperature and nutrients also contribute to the production of chlorophyll. If you don't have a certain shade of color in the leaves, that doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong. Then the color of the stem. They are radishes, most of which are RED, and the red part is where the radish bulb will form. Radishes are spicy, therefore, more red more spicy. Very helpful videos, Thank you.
💚Thank you so much for the support The Blake Cobb Pod!! Please let us assist you in finding your microgreen playground!!! 😄 BTW you got any poems about farming...share!?
Hey guys. I’d be curious to know how growing in the sun would affect the flavor of something milder like peas or sunflowers. Thanks again and keep up the good work. Be safe.
1. Right off the bat...the color difference is because sunlight has ALL of the wavelengths, where as man made light does not. Interesting that the mass produced was a bit less with natural sunlight. However, if you only interested in money, indoor grown is fine. You DID say the outdoor grown batch had a TON more of flavor. Even without reading some comments below, I would have said the outdoor grown batch would have more nutrition. That said, during the winter, indoor grown will still grow better than outdoor. Very good information on this channel. Thank you.
You mentioned you dont bottom water for some time now. Did you decide to totally let go of bottom watering and why? What is the method that you used for this Daikon Radish? Thanks
Great question! We still bottom-water the main chinch of our trays... we only top-watered because that’s the only way we could water the outside trays, so to keep it consistent we top watered the two indoor trays. This was all top-watered. It does work well, but you have to make sure you let the canopy dry decently before harvest so that the product stays fresh. We prefer bottom-watering because we can add nutrients that way 🤗🌱🌱
Thank you for your reply and taking your time. Love to watch your videos. Planning to start growing microgreens, gathering equipment at the moment, and your channel is truly helpful 🙏🙏
I TRULY TRULY REALLY LOVE YOU TWO. Thank you for sharing your wonderful and useful content during this difficult time in our country. You both literally ROCK!
Wow!! Nice job , i’d just want to know how was the set up made for outdoors test, i mean, some kind of protection to avoid insects or something like that? Or anything? I always enjoy your content guys!!✨👍
Thank you so much and great question! We didn’t have any issues with pests right now, so we kept it simple and placed them on a easy DIY wooden shelf out in the open! Thank you for the continued support!
@@OnTheGrow Just got put on to Micro-greens and its potential personally and monetary. Have watched so many of your videos, they are great Thank you :) Would love to see more outdoor growing videos. Out in Jamaica so would be a shame to grow indoors
Don’t you guys usually use 3 of those LEDs on each shelf? Did you add 3 more to try to compete with sunlight? I just got a pack of those same 22W LED Bulbs and I wasn’t planning on putting 6 on each shelf, I’m a little nervous now!
Correct! We have used 3 per shelf for about 6 months now with great results. We are experimenting with different levels of light now to see what kind of growth we can get... Using the 6 per shelf has provided some pretty solid results, so we are going to try some test with 3 per shelf, 4 per shelf, 5 per shelf and 6 per shelf to see how it effects growth... Some people have also removed the little plastic frosted covers from their LED’s and they say it doubles the output of the lights... so essentially 3 lights would be equivalent to 6 per shelf. We haven’t tried this yet and I’m not sure how safe it is to do, but I’ll probably try it soon just to see. 3 per shelf provides some really solid growth though and worked great for all this time! Hope that helps, -CJ
On The Grow I’ve been able to get away with some really nice growth by only using 2 light bars per tray after removing the white cover :) It’s a bit risky because the LEDs are exposed, but as long as you’re careful then there’s no issue. Also, the lights are so inexpensive that it’s so worth it. The chances of actually doing damage to the LEDs are super slim. I’m hyped to see the result :D
I am very new to your channel. Every time I watch one I think:"wow, that was helpful!" Today after watching this one I thought:" Wow! These are my kind of people!!!" What a dead on experiment! You tackled a question that all serious growers & farmers wrestle with. In the comments someone said:" Sun is God" Hmmm...while it is true that all living species require some amount of Sun; the Sun is brutal, intense & severely damaging and not at all forgiving! When I saw ur 4 trays, I immediately noticed the 2 faded looking ones. They were more crunchy? Heck yeah, of course, they were getting toasty! Since I moved to deep South Texas 12 yrs. ago, my arms became sun damaged. I now have Sun spots on my face and I am NOT at all fair skinned! The dash on my vehicle became faded & started to crack within 2 yrs. My windshield wipers fell apart yearly. The rubber on my tires took a beating. My interior cloth seats became faded on the passenger side. (I now have a garage to park my vehicles). Everything left outside takes a severe Sun beating! Last year it was in the 90's °F during Thanksgiving & X-mas. We are already in the high 90's again. Triple digits are just around the corner. Thanks to TX A &M importing insects here from all over the World (to combat specific problems) we now have more live insects that call deep South Texas home than any other region in the entire U. S.! Since it also never snows here, our insects don't die in the winter, they thrive all 12 months out of the year! So growing Organically outdoors is a serious challenge. I cringe when I think of how much money goes into growing inside my new (well used.. But it is NEW to me, since I just put $ on the table, lol) and then contaminating it with aphids, boll weevils or a zillion of other insects outside! I noticed no one asked this question: Which one wilted faster? This is an important question if you can't harvest right away. (Your buyer is not ready so you want to wait & not cut until they can accept delivery...or u run out of space in your fridge) Anyway, LOVED your video! You guys are making relatable useful videos that are also fun to watch. Just subscribed, I am hooked!
I was raised in northern New York State, about 50 miles south of the Canadian border and above the 45th Parallel. I moved to central Texas for about 3 years. I can say from experience that at your latitude, the sun is much more intense. Wear/ apply sunblock in the summer. Gotta take that all into consideration when growing stuff
🙂Thank you so much for the support Cienciabit: Ciencia y Tecnología.!! We are going to be making new content soon! 😄 You are correct...ease and control of the enviroment!!
If you only watered the outdoor micros once as you did the indoor that might have contributed to the lighter color. Being outdoors with the sun and heat it would need more water.
Hi i live in gatineau quebec , i have a spare room in my appartment and would like to start growing microgreen , what i want to know do i get some clients to buy them Each week. ? , i seen your link to amazon for the shelf and lights. Im gona buy some before starting , by the love your vids

The outdoor group is showing signs of slight nitrogen deficiency. Because of the stronger light you should be able to give them more nutrients than the indoor group.
Microgreens are one crop that would do well grown indoors. To say which is the best method would depend on the situation. I don't set my wheatgrass outdoors because of bugs. A shade house or greenhouse might be a best of both worlds.
Leave it to you guys to come up with another amazing test. Now I know that sunlight makes a big difference in flavor. Interesting that the gross production weight slightly favored the indoor crop. I suppose the only way to get the sun's light without exposure to bugs and pests would be a greenhouse. Thanks for the great and informative videos!
Here is our thoughts in a super short video after testing both indoor & outdoor methods ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rDn1RrWTFQI.html
what was the difference in weight? i know that if you grow any plant under shade cloth the leaves are a darker green because they are producing more Chlorophyll to try capture as much light as possible, i'm gonna guess that why the indoor radish where darker green, they wanted more light... even though 120W is a lot and i wouldn't spend more on electricity than that... im only running 2 bulbs per rack in my small set up but am trying to grow outside now,
Difference in weight was about 30-40grams in favor of the indoor group. We’ve noticed that if plants get more than sufficient light, we usually get a lower harvest weight.
Great experiment.! Have u tried growing under solar charged lamps instead of led Also what about vitamin d and chlorophyll contents comparison. Its great experiment for new age .especially in cold countries or also may be where there is desert or too much sunlight .. Sunlight also gives energy that is different from led just like how different we feel when we sit under sun or in home LEDs !!:-) Great.!!liked comparisons
This is a really cool experiment! I wonder if you could get the weight back with an extra day of blackout? Or maybe with some row cover (with the added benefit of insect protection)? I get that you lose something from leaving the controlled environment but for the home grower, the electrical and space savings would be nice!
Great questions! Absolutely agreed on trying to find the best way to grow outside! I’m going to be trying some DIY racks and shade clothes to see if we can get some solid outdoor growth!
You didn't say the conditions you grew the outdoor group in. If it wasn't a controlled greenhouse then you were testing more than just light. You were testing temperature/humidity variables as well. Also most growers don't grow micros in direct light unless it's from a windowsill. If they grow outside they use indirect light either in their grow location or with a shade cloth.
The temperature was actually quite similar to that of our indoor grow with it averaging about 72F. Yeah, we understand how to grow microgreens outdoors, this was simply a test to see how direct sunlight could effect the growth. This is not a “how to grow outdoors” video... Thanks for sharing!
If the clip is not in this video, then no we do not. It's an old video haha. Whenever we decide to make new videos, we'll be sure to include that since we've made a lot of improvements to our filming process.
I've been interested in building my own micro green setup and have been wondering what kind of lights you guys prefer. Looking at both the Barrina (pink) full spectrum as well as the classic t5 LED 20W Barrina. Ive watched your videos on them but still seem to see that you guys primarily use the three t5s a rack. Is there reason that you guys use those more than the pink full spectrum LEDs?
Jake, I found myself asking a similar question and based upon the information provided by CJ, one possible answer would be: The cheap 3X T5 LED set up, not only costs 50% (+) less than the other setups he is testing on each rack, it also uses 50% (+) less power. That means that for the same price and running costs (or less), he can light 2 racks instead of just one and still produce an acceptable product.
Hi Can you show Fenugreek microgreens once? I tried twice at home and followed the steps (3 days under brick pressure, two days of blackout), but the outer shell of the seed is sticking to the microgreen and it is difficult to get rid of that seed shell before using the microgreens. Highly appreciate your help here. Thank you.
That's lux not par, par maxes for the sun at around 2500ppfd. So either the decimal is being read wrong or it's 10x off and needs calibration lol the suns max is 2500, literally can't go higher lol
I found your video by looking for “How to grow micro greens outside. “ I found your Contant to be very good, but it didn’t answer my questions which are how are they safe with rats squirrels mice, and bunnies outside with access. That is the concern I have - and I’m wondering if I can keep them sanitary out in the world without a greenhouse? Any thoughts?!
I don’t think this is a fair comparison. There’s no way you got 17-7 schedule with the sun so did you do supplemental lighting when it was sunset/night? Another thing, there’s no way the sun put out 24k par. I would say your apogee is messed it but those machines are accurate AF! Nonetheless good work and thank you for the comparisons you do with the different lights, spectrums and amount of lights tan on each shelf. You take out the guessing game for a lot of us👌🏽
As a garnish I wonder if chefs would prefer the outdoor group due to more flavor with less product required, but especially due to more color. I guess it depends on the need or application of the customer. Great video!
We got ours from the hardware store! The bricks we use were in the outdoor section where you find pavers and walk-way stones. This is the one we use: www.lowes.com/pd/Rectangle-Gray-Concrete-Patio-Stone-Common-8-in-x-16-in-Actual-7-7-in-x-15-6-in/3018997 Let me know if that helps!
The state of Vermont has just ordered Walmart to stop the sale of non essential items like garden seeds and clothes. Information is from Mike Adams at Natural News.
Another great video, and another great experiment. Would've liked to hear you talk about the outdoor environmental factors such as overnight temps, pest problems, increased need for watering, etc. It would help to have a better idea about the challenges of growing outdoors in an uncontrolled environment, versus indoor controlled. And, by the way, how did you keep the critters from eating your micros? Where we live, I would have to use a clear cover over the trays, probably with a weight on them, to keep the Ground Squirrels, and mice from eating the entire crop.
Once again great video! Love watching you guys! How about you try garlic microgreens? Regarding packaging, which ones do you recommend? containers with holes or no holes? Opinions vary and I would like to know yours. Keep up the great work! p.s. the microgreens you did outside, were they out since day one? even during the night?
I flinched when you said top-water lol, thought it was April fool's. This is great! This gives me the courage to try growing microgreens in my window seal
weird that the outdoor group had lighter leaves :O totally wouldve expected the opposite cuz one would imagine that chlorophyll (that which makes plants greens) would be developed more if there is more sun to catch -- but maybe there was "too much sun" so the plants were like "nahnahnah, have enough sun, i just need this much chlorophyll to build to meet my needs"
If you use a light which would have UV, you could get the same purple stem as outside. I am surprised you got over 20,000 outside. Direct sun should be around 10,000.
2:48 The colour difference indicates the fact that the indoor greens are grown artificially, therefore not as naturally well ballanced in healthy substances as the outdoor grown ones. Mother nature always wins! Cheers!
We have a video showing our farmers market sales and we’re going to be making videos about this in the future! Our main goal was teaching people how to grow and comparing grow options!
Nothing is better than that of the Creator, no indoor growth can top that. There is a reason for everything, why must we always feel that we can do better than He who made it in the first place. Natural growth is healthier and more nutritious for anyone.

This is a really cool idea. Y'all have interesting experiments. My daikon is very strong for two days. Then the taste kind if goes away..Is that normal? Maybe y'all can grow them some days in and some day outdoors. Get flavor/color and bulk possibly
