A mother should never rely on due date provided by a clinic or hospital. If you are being induced you may actually be at week 37 or 38 or the other way around. You should trust your body and your baby. When the baby is ready, it will eventually come out. Its best to keep track of your cycles and know the possible dates of conception to get a accurate estimate of your own due date. Most new mothers have a high failure rate when getting induced. The issue is, you may be getting contractions but other parts of your body may not be ready to accommodate a vaginal birth. That's when c-section are motioned to the mother already burnt out. The female body is very complex. It goes through a sort of metamorphosis before the actual vaginal delivery. Always approach with caution when certain infos are mentioned to you about your baby. Many factors need to taken into consideration before opting in alternative process to expidate contractions early. Not all current science is conclusive and have a lot vagueness in their studies. So you as a new mother becomes a study case for such studies. Best of luck because a doctors main job is to "practice medicine/drug." Some are successful and some are not. It is ultimately your decision.

I've found that I have a gigantic fear of labor induction, for some reason. Been unnecessarily stressed about it, especially since Cytotec is on the plan, but this video and comments are putting me at ease. Thanks guys

This video was incredibly helpful to watch as I am being induced on my due date next Tuesday. My doctor is giving me Cytotec first as my cervix is still thick and then pitocin the next day. Of course I "researched" the cytotec and saw some controversial stuff so I'm glad this video cleared that question up. Very excited for next week!

Thank you for this video on induction. I am being induced this Wednesday May 14th at 39 weeks 2 days. I always hear that being induced is so horribly painful. I too feel that women who are induced, probably feel it's worse than natural birth since they are anticipating the pain. When I went into natural labor with twin girls that I lost at 22 weeks due to an incompetent cervix, I was in the hospital for days and I woke up one morning in so much pain from the contractions. So I feel the pain will be just about the same. I lost my girls unfortunately, but I became pregnant again and I am expecting my first son. I had my cerclage removed at 37 weeks and I am so thankful to have finally made it full term! Once again, thanks for your videos they are really helpful!

Hi omaricha! I totally forgot about my reply to this video. lol Well my experience of being induced wasn't so bad. It only was painful during delivery which lasted about 2 hours of active pushing. In total the induction/labor/delivery was 7 hours tops. Good luck with your delivery I can't believe my little guy will be 1 year old next month. Enjoy it because it goes by SO fast!:-)

I’m glad we have social induction here. I’m 40 weeks now and will be induced in a few days. I’ve not dilated at all and have had only false labor contractions. My baby is already measuring 9lbs and has flipped multiple times in the last few weeks. Waiting on labor to happen naturally just seemed unnecessary. I have no true medical reason to be induced but even my doctor agreed that I just may be one of those that needs help moving things along. Plus we have to make sure he hasn’t breeched again. Being in the hospital the whole labor process will be a good thing for me. I’m so happy too. I don’t see why people have an issue with induction when you’ve gone full term. With how big he is, how big I am, contractions, swelling, no sleep I’m glad I’m not being forced to wait this out two more weeks. Plus this gave me and my husband the opportunity to plan time off from work. My short team leave starts the day of my induction and my husband was able to put in for a week vacation. As long as baby is healthy and you’ve gone at least 39 weeks I don’t see the problem with being induced.

Great channel Doc. In my experience, the induction contractions hit me like a truck every time. Where normal contractions are gentle and build, induction contractions are immediately intense, relentless and grinding. I was too late for an epidural so maybe that would have helped me once upon a time.

Here in Germany there's no such thing as a social induction. You can't just decide to have an induction for a non-medical reason prior to 11 days over the due date
@Mandeee
@Mandeee 4 года назад
That's reassuring, especially after feeling pressured and unnecessarily stressed due to doctors pushing induction. In the US, the doctors seem to push induction just so it works better for their schedule, not just for medical reasons. Being told a bunch of scare tactics before even reaching my "due date" and having no prior or current medical reason is unsettling..
@Mandeee
@Mandeee 4 года назад
So yeah, I've been unnecessarily stressing and more anxious than ever about my babies health just because I'm slightly "over due". All because they've been mentioning induction since about 37 weeks & even getting aggravated with me for saying no.

Hello doctor! Great info abt presumptions bw induction nd natural labor.. I was kind of skeptical being getting induced in a weeks time, though relieved a bit now. Wanted to know if cerclage causes any fibrosis or scar formation which can hinder cervix to dialate?
@MedTwice
@MedTwice 10 лет назад
Cerclage should not cause scar tissue to form. My experience with patients that had a cerclage is that inductions tend to go well since the cervix is already prone to dilating.

I have pre-exisiting high blood pressure and diabetes. Everything has been fine through my pregnancy, never even needed insulin. But they want to induce me at 39 weeks, possibly at 38 weeks (I have had some dizzy spells). Is it normal to induce someone even if things have been running smoothly?
@LivingwPCOS
@LivingwPCOS 10 лет назад
oh, I also know that last week I was "high and tight" yesterday I was 50% effaced and about 1 cm dilated. So I don't know if that means I will go sooner on my own, I will be 37 weeks tomorrow.
@MedTwice
@MedTwice 10 лет назад
I routinely deliver people with diabetes and high blood pressure at 39 weeks even when everything is going smoothly. Induction at 38 weeks would make sense if you or the baby start to have complication, The fact that your cervix is changing is a good sign. You may go into labor on your own before the scheduled induction. Even if you don't, it will make the induction easier.

@melodydaftarian3360
@melodydaftarian3360 2 года назад
Can you let me know how it worked out for you? They've been pushing it on me and same situation. I think genetics play a role in calcification and they use it as a scare tactic to say the placenta isn't healthy. If it wasn't healthy then the baby wouldn't be healthy...

Would you induce if the baby is measuring too large?
@MedTwice
@MedTwice 9 лет назад
Michelle Duran This is a difficult problem. First of all, it is very difficult, if not impossible, to accurately predict fetal weight. The studies are mixed. There is a benefit to induction (after 39 weeks) in delivering the baby before it continues to grow if you think the baby is large. On the other hand, there is an increase risk of c-section with inductions in general. I have a conversation about these issues with my patient and choose the direction that she feels comfortable with.
@humanbeing3946

Hi dr. Where do you practice I would love to have you as my dr. I have a quick question my dr wants to induce at 39 weeks. I was told potocin at times dosent work. I'm very worried because I want it to work! I don't want to resort to a c section. Do you think potocin would work at 39 weeks for me?
@MedTwice
@MedTwice 10 лет назад
I practice in Ventura CA. You can see my bio at medtwice.com. There are many ways to induce labor, pitocin is only one of the agents at our disposal. If the pitocin does not work there are many other things that can be used to allow you to have a vaginal delivery and avoid a c-section.
@bfa4127
@bfa4127 10 лет назад
I wish you were closer. I live near the dodger stadium in Los Angeles. I've noticed my dr tries to take the easy way out a lot of times. Episiotomies, csections, not waiting more then the end of 39 week. etc. although I expressed to him I want to avoid a c section he seems to insist if the potocin doesn't work, then c section it is. even if there is no life or death situation for me or baby. I'll be 37 weeks this coming mon and am praying I go into labor by May 5 on my own. But it doesn't even seem like my daughter has dropped. Is there anything I can do to try to help my body respond to potocin in the event I am induced? Are there anyways I can naturally help induce labor at home??? Thank you so much for responding. I really appreciate your advice and time.
@MedTwice

Beauty From Ashes Makeup Ventura is a bit too far I am afraid! There are a lot of "wives tales" about things you can do to help get labor going. None of them actually work. My rule is that if you are going to try one of these things make sure it is pleasant, since it wont work anyway. For example, some people recommend a walk on the beach. It won't actually get you into labor but at least it is pleasant. Some people recommend drinking Castor oil, it will give you horrible diarrhea but it won't put you into labor. That one, not so pleasant.

Must be a convenient position to be in as a man who has never given birth and will never give birth, to say induced birth is not more painful - contradicting most mums out there who have gone through it. BTW what is the difference in your mind between an ACTUALLY more painful birth versus a PERCEIVED more painful? Pain is perception of pain.

He's a doctor. He bases his words on data and research. Most women I know say induced labour wasn't harder than natural. My mother had an induced labour with me and for her it was easier than natural labour. What may make the pain seem worse is the anticipation of it and the fact that the labour often starts more abruptly.
