Amazing all the commenters here exposing themselves as stupid. Concertina effect is real, anyone in peak traffic on a motorway knows it. As each car checks up there is less and less time for cars following at speed to slow down. Two+ car pile ups on motorways happen almost daily due to this mathematical factor, described as concertina effect in Formula 1. A similar thing has happened in motorsport many times, Melbourne F1 grand prix warm up lap being one of the most recent. Katherine Legge did an INCREDIBLE JOB to slow the car as much as she did. Well done.

There’s two sets of spotters for each driver. 1 in turn 1 on top of the E Penthouse, and 1 on top of the NE Vista deck

Thank you NBC for making this available! Maybe they should have spotters at each corner for safety? Also, I feel bad for Katherine Legge - the cars are moving so quickly and the moment the cars in front of her checked up, even a little bit, she could've been taking a 1/2 second to look at a gauge, or something and that would have been all it took. Obviously she feels terrible about it. Glad no one was hurt. Can't wait until the race!

"Pass in the grass"? Why do they call it that? Just to make it sound dramatic? The famous version of that didn't involve a pass but at least the car actually hit the grass. This one involved a pass but wasn't even close to touching the grass. I guess it's just not as cool sounding to describe those events truthfully.

You can't actually think that someone who hasn't raced an IndyCar in 10 years legitimately beat someone who has been in the last 11? Indy 500s. You might want to look into the history of the 500. The current schedule is much shorter than it was for the majority of the event's existence. Not too long ago there were 2 full weekends of qualifying, that's 4 days. The month of May was dominated by this event and it received a lot of attention for the duration of that time.

She has the experience to back her. If you watch the car infront of Wilson has to back off due to the side by side pass entering the corner. Wilson probably due to being able to directly see the side by side was able to predict it. I would like to see you do better at over 230 mph in a corner with maybe around double the gap you see between cars on American highways when the car infront of you slows down without break lights.
