@@briangriffith3985 except the landcruiser isnt available in the UK is it ? GR beats this on specs, more power, more torque, more gears, same weight, much more modern interior and its a toyota so should be reliable

The interior of the LR defender is way better, I'd prefer it for that alone The panomric roof and the roof holes make it a better passesnger experience
Its probably gonna continue squeaking and creaking, truthfully the Current Defender is what I call a proper upgrade from the disco 4&3 and unlike the Disco 5 you can take it offroad and not feel bad about scratching a panel or the bumper, the ineos is cool but you can't compare it to the Defender when it comes to comfortability and daily driveability and the fact that the new defender doesn't have a ladder frame chassis I sure know which care I'd like to be in offroading as well and it's definitely not the ineos
The Ineos Grenadier is proof that you (Land Rover) shouldn't attempt to "fix" something that was never broken to begin with. I wanted a classic Defender, but after seeing this, I'd like to be greedy and have both. GREAT review, Mat!
Really? The old defender is a shit car. Absolutely kills your back after a long journey, so loud you can’t hear yourself think inside it, mpg is impressively shit, reliability is abysmal had mine breakdown on the road three times in 40k miles, very little interior space considering the size, crap stereo, crap ac and heating. Etc etc.
@@simonwilson7581 Yes. Then again, sticking to a slightly updated version of the old design, with big updates and upgrades to the interior and tech, worked well for the Mercedes G-Wagon. Those things sell faster than they can build them too, despite the hefty price.
Nah, the new defender is a massive success. People like the idea of an old defender, but anyone who's spent time in one will tell you how utterly terrible they were. What they've done with the new one is perfect - it's hugely capable off road, but refined on it, which is where most spend their lives. And it's relatively affordable. They nailed it. Sure, they could've stuck a caricature body on the new car like Mercedes. Meh, would it have made it any better?
These are dope! I’m so happy to see smaller companies like this coming in and building manual, old school, low tech, purpose built vehicles. I’d love to see a company come in and build a manual transmission, low tech sports car.
I can understand why LR would want to take them to court for copyright but as far as I know, copyright only lasts 25 years. I suspect LR are pissed off because they discontinued their own Defender and perhaps wished they had of made this. This Grenadier looks like it will become a real commercial truck and not something for the city.
I heard that part of that sue was a study, in which they were presenting a silhouette of the Grenadier and asking people what car is on the picture and most of them replied simply a jeep :)
The EU emissions killed off the old defender, land rover should have kept the shell and upgraded the engine. Instead they've given us a chunky range rover. Ineos will kill off the new defender.
@@mrpete1972 this won’t kill off the new defender, the new defender is better in nearly every way, and it’s starting price is even cheaper, you also have a lot more options when it comes to engines etc, You get more vehicle for your money along with the name of a icon.
Britain at its best sad that our homemade vehicles are thin on the ground. The only problem I think the demand will be so high will they be able to manufacture enough, great for heavy industrial use and difficult territory like Australia ,Middle East, Africa fantastic vehicle at a good price I would buy one in a flash
I've been waiting for the Grenadier for several years now and in that time the price has doubled! As a farmer, Ineos must be dreaming if they think we will pay £53k starting price. Maybe a wealthy land owner would buy it, although they would probably get a Range Rover instead. Therefore I'm not sure who this is for. Maybe townies with large incomes who want to play at off roading at the weekend? Although why not just buy the more luxurious new Defender. I would buy this but it would have to be closer to the original price.
@@warrenhulme1193 And it would still leak like a sieve, rattle and creak, be unbearably noisy, pollute like a tractor and have switch gear, seals, wipers, gauges and so much more, based on 70s British Leyland parts bins. I've had my Defender, from new since 2001and driven it 95,000 miles, mainly off-road. I've lost count of the parts I've replaced, many, many, more than once. New locks all around, that I can still open with a screwdriver. Don't talk such tosh about restoration being better than the Grenadier. This thing is an absolute thing of beauty and you're delusional if you think any rebuilt Defender comes anywhere near. This is the Defender, Landrover should have built, fit for the 21st Century.
Mat mate.. you deserve more than this.. really a good real review and you’re so natural and informative at it. really really well done! finally there’s somebody come up with the company where we can custom our very own truck! This is next future classic! I want one 🔥
@@hahaha-mj7oe both are dwarfed by carwow viewing figures. They may currently have more subscribers but are far behind for monthly views. For example last month Chris fix had 17.4 million views, top gear 22.6 million… Car Wow 61.175 million 😂
I have the new Defender P300 and having had a 1998 Defender 90 for 12 years, the new one wins hands down. I can certainly report that the air suspension really excels in the wild outback areas of Henley-on-Thames towards Nettlebed.
If Land Rover won't make cars like this anymore then I can't blame this company and vehicle for filling the gap. Time will tell if it's as good as what it inspires to be
@@pinzgauerbelgium :-D The Pinzgauer is arguably worse as a car, but better offroad than anything anyone builds at the moment. (maybe apart from tanks and some Unimog Variants)
I pray that the colour combos that we've seen on these preproduction models will be used on the production model. And this only weighs 500kg more than the old defender 110, but that's only safety equipment, so it's not that bad
Try carrying 10 of 50kg bags of ballast on your back to see what it really means. Or more sensibly, carry ten 50kg bags of anything [yes they are still available] from one place to another, 100 metres apart.
@@harleyrobertson6746 That’s a massive amount of extra weight as I illustrated. It effects everything from handling to fuel economy to the performance on and off road to the amount of payload it can carry while also towing, to the class of MOT inspection it has, to its speed limits on certain roads as a commercial vehicle in many countries.
I knew it had to be a BMW Diesel from that deep rumble, it sounds like my car upon cold idle. M57 diesel is one of the most hardcore engines out there.
Modern vehicles like Defender L663 look great. It really looks like something a very good designer made... .. but i can't quite figure out why... i don't like those. While the INEOS GRENADIER is also a modern vehicle and it looks FANTASTIC. On the dashboard, the buttons look like a military machine. There are bolts on the side of the little panels on which the buttons are held and there are two handles on the sides of the hazard switch. SO COOL!
I got to see one at a local festival, that I did Security at, the first thing i said when i saw it was that looks like an older defender and would love to get one and mod it like a proper defender. I got to see one of the non-runner versions and could see how early it was since a lot of the buttons where either from other vehicles or where 3d printed and had no markings. Would love to actually love to see one in the wild and have a go in one.
And complaints like this is why all new Land Rovers aren't actually off-roaders. They're now catered towards luxury. That creaking is quite normal and wouldn't be experienced on-road.
@@kylegriffiths5990 don't think you have to sacrifice luxury for offroad capabilities🤷♂️ so could you explain what the creaking is cause I've never heard that in any car
Loved this Mat, really good overall intro to this vehicle and the price seems to be fair for such a 'proper' vehicle. Just hope the chassis truly is fully rust-proofed ???
Looking in to granaries it’s nice off roader. But boot space - bulging from both side 🤔, need a fully flat 2nd row seat to the boot level, also need 7 seat option. Like a disco 4
It’s just a shame they’ve went with the archaic and less practical rear seat folding of 60:40 instead of the much better and user friendly in the real world 40:20:40 It would allow two rear passengers and stuff to pass thru that small middle seat D’oh !!!
The big problem with this car is the owner of INEOS being the man who put families under a lot of stress in the North of England with his dirty FRACKING SITES. And didn't his firm seek injunctions to stop activists from protesting the destruction of their countryside?
Interesting (and slightly terrifying) to note that since this video was made, the price of the entry level model has gone up by £7,000 - Now starting at 55k. For reference, the Land Rover Defender Commercial (which would be its nearest natural competitor) starts at £58,000 and is a LOT more luxurious inside...
Great offroader. But pricing is insane. In The Netherlands this car costs €170k which is more expensive even then the New Defender....its a showstopper for me.
Should have made the Welsh car factory for assembly... And also used the hambach one and build right hand drive in the UK and left hand drive on the continent... Hate how this projects turned out
No diesel in the US, and turbo on the gasoline version means reduced reliability/durability and expensive maintenance. BMW lately have been known for good performance for 100,000 miles then expensive turbocharger maintenance. The Grenadier design philosophy is rugged practical durability without the complexity, so it's a shame they chose a complicated turbocharged engine. I would have preferred a larger normally aspirated engine. The frame does look excellent, though.
Why landrover didn’t do this and release their version as a defender sport is anyone’s guess not like they seem to worry about it with other models in the range .
I can not work out why Land Rover didn't design the new defender like this l suppose it has an ANCAP rating and people will buy a boxy off roader look at the Suzuki Jimny and very popular in Australia infact there is a waiting list for them also how will it sell well it looks very capable actually it looks great it will sell
The development was done by Magna in Graz, Austria. So the Grenadier is definitely in the tradition of the Mercedes G/Puch G, which was also developed by Daimler-Steyr-Puch (Magna's predecessor company) and Mercedes in Graz in 1979. The engines come from the BMW engine plant in Steyr, also Austria. The Grenadier is then manufactured in Hambach, France, in the former Smart plant, which Ineo bought from Mercedes. All the best to Ineos, looks like a great car.
I don't really go off-road. But I would buy a Grenadier. Why? Proper buttons and big, simple controls. Big windows. Great visibility. Real handles. Great interior space. Manual handbrake. Proper mirrors. Rugged. Simple materials. I wish more cars were made like this.
The new Defender has all that, except for the manual handbrake, and it also isn’t some dude’s hastily slapped together vanity project, but a proper car.
Your comment needs to be pinned to the top sir. I agree with you hundred percent. My mind tought of something similar about the new gay defender its horrible. And now this comes out it's a big win for me in my heart. I love this vehicle its proper shape style stance its mean its says move out the way plastics.
I love having more options and competition in the space, personally i think the Grenadier makes some poor choices on config and is upper end of the market for what you get, but will be popular anyway with the hype and excitement, and i dont think it will flop
For once a well designed and really solid vehicle, 99% of modern off roaders are not ruggedly built and often fail a few years in, time will tell if this is as reliable as it looks, yes I would consider buying one
I would have thought that the 60/40 rear split seats would align with the door openings, i.e. the 40 split with the small opening and the 60 split with the wider one.
The fact the seats don’t fold flat is crazy. Rules the car out for me, the things massive, but there less usable “tip run” space than my old Mercedes ml, which has a fully flat floor.
Its got some weird design choices which I guess comes from the ground up design. Wedging that 3.0L beamer engine into a weirdly shaped engine bay, for one. Its just such an inefficient layout which causes the weird humped roof and leaves no space for the electronics/ battery. The suspension mounts for the leaf springs are left danging below the frame, thats just not how modern ladder frame/ leaf springs work. You've basically just compromised your ground clearance. And the list goes on.
Love the INEOS Grenadier. What the 4x4 buyers' market sorely needs today is an affordable no-frills INEOS Grenadier - just like a Suzuki Jimny - only bigger. The problem with the INEOS Grenadier and other 4x4s is they are very expensive so out of reach for many fans.
This is a rival for a G-wagon not an original defender, I can’t see many farmers splashing out £48000 for the base model grenadier. The original defender became obsolete for its target market: farmers! Farmers mostly moved to Japanese vehicles as they’re far cheaper and more reliable.
