Love Savannah, GA!!! So much history. This story is only one small slice of salacious, tantalizing and interesting history. It is also a beautiful place with lovely architecture. The trees, the mansions, the food, the people....all amazing. I recommend everyone goes to visit and have themselves a little stay!
Love it when non-Southerners come down and are overwhelmed with the beauty. It’s like they are totally charmed by the trees, flowers, and of course, the accent. 💐
With all of Kevin Spacey's recent issues, i came back to this film, and learned that Berendt thought Tommy Lee Jones might make a good "Jim Williams". WOW. Kevin Spacey NAILED this role.
Yes. The late Dep Kirkland of the DA's office was at the scene of the murder and said Spacey's performance was spot on,as if Williams had come back to life

Born and raised in Savannah, then was forced to move to Texas at the age of 18 (I ended up in the system and when I came of age I was given a high dose of Valium, put on a plane and flown to Texas where my drug addict mom lived) Now I’m stuck in Texas and I regret taking advantage of the incredible place I grew up in.

Absolutely Great Movie! Very entertaining, great quality screen play and directing. ALL ACTORS VERY GOOD, SOME MORE OUTSTANDING THEN OTHERS, but perhaps that also because the characters they played are written with more meaty depth. I really cannot say enough about how good this movie affected me, todays movies usually lack quality in so many ways but this movie was produced in quality that presents a vitality of life and the variety of the human spirit. Although, I'm not really an Eastwood fan, per se; nevertheless very likely no other director nor producer could have achieved the excellence in entertainment that this movie does, while also a production of class, without the boredom too often evident in our classy movies today.
Excellent EXCEPT for the no purpose role of the journalist, who ads nothing but time & doesn’t bring any meaning to the film vs. the other characters. Whether he was there or not in reality. If he were the informed narrator such as in Sophie’s Choice, I’d be much happier with the film. LOVE Mr Clint Eastwood.
..." It was the boy that done it....." check that line on the novel , it's the key of the whole mystery, by the way Savannah is an absolute beauty, the city, the atmosphere, everything...
Cedar Abbey , I beg to differ. The film captured the essence of the book on a lot of levels. They complement one another. The book really should've been made into a mini series.
Cedar Abbey , then we will have to agree to disagree. I saw the movie first, loved it...only then I checked out the book which I also loved (and while reading the book, I noticed how everyone in the cast fit their parts to a tee). But I can understand why certain liberties and licenses were applied to condense the story into a two hour movie...which is why I personally thought the book should've been made into a mini-series instead.
I think the film really misfires on the nature of the relationship between Jim Williams and Hansford. I don't know for sure what the relationship was like, but given all the details of the murder, it would seem like Hansford was a button pusher and Williams had an aggressive, repressed and vengeful temperament. I would be surprised if Williams was all stoic and paternal.
Agree with the other comments. Love the book, but soooo disappointed in the movie......despite some good acting talent like Kevin Spacey, Jude Law, and John Cusack....and a haunting "Skylark" by kd lang. What really pissed me off was Clint Eastwood making the author straight so there could be a romance with Eastwood's daughter. What is this, the 1940s? Do we really need to throw someone in the closet for the movie version? .....and even worse, just so the director's daughter has a part. Arrrg. Maybe they could make a re-edited version without her.
The author never discussed his sexuality in the book, and it was not relevant to the plot of movie, so this is just another case of Hollywood taking liberties to create a marketable movie. Hollywood has been introducing romance into fact-based movies forever, and this is just another example. I see no problem with it. Maybe they thought a relationship involving a middle-aged gay man and his hustler boy-toy, plus a cross-dressing gay male entertainer, was sufficient. I suspect they might have been right.
