Man, I'm really happy you dig SE Electronics stuff! When I've tried the V7X on my snare I've been blown away from the tone, so clear and fat at the same time- when I got all the rest of the mics for my (huge) kit I immediately sold everything I was using before. These microphone rock! And they are heavy duty. Thank you for the video! Next RNT series!
I do actually like these SE Electronics mics, and the way you have them setup they all gel together really well. The SE7 & SE8 are damn good on overheads, and really good for acoustic guitar too. The V7X is a great sounding snare mic, and it's also good on guitar cab. Some other affordable options, in this approx. price range are the Audix range, D6, D4, D2. Especially the D4 is a really good floor tom mic, and also good on bass cab. I probably prefer the more classic AKG D112 or a Beta 52A for kick, rather than SE V Kick or Audix D6. Apart from heavier styles where a D6 hits deep, and V kick is in that ballpark. The Audix i5 is good for snare too, at around SM57/SE V7X price range, but has a bit more bite, sizzle and snap on snare bottom than an SM57 or V7X. For overheads, I really like the tiny Line Audio CM4 SDCs, at around £100 each. Above that price range, a second-hand Beyerdynamic 201 for snare is worth the stretch to about £200, if you can afford it. And second-hand Sennheiser 421s can be found for a little over £200 too. And, overall I think it's worth saving up for at least one 421. Because they are great for floor tom, but really versatile. Because I love them on bass cab and electric guitar cab too. Always worth having a couple of SM57s around though, for snare and electric guitar cab. The GAP R1A is a nice affordable active large ribbon mic, that's good for room mic, for around £200 and also good as a vocal mic. Cascade Fatheads work well too, nice and dark, and great on guitar cab too.
ordered a pair of sE7 sdc's as backup overhead mics in my touring rig cuz they were cheap. I used them in a rehearsal the other day and they are no longer my backup mics. sound awesome. probably gonna get some sE8's at some point too.

They take eq pretty well. The v7x/vBeat have a lot of low end and top end. Lacks some mid range but that is no problem with a bit of eq sE8 are not the best with eq I found. So I returned those. The old sE4 and 5 are better for OH in my opinion.
Like sE. Have a bunch of them. But the price of the vBeat is redicoulus. It's the same mic as v7x that costs half of vBeat. So save a lot of money and get the v7x
unless you are using really low end mics that's not bad at all. For me, when I went with "cheap" mics track drums with and get good quality captures of the kit, this is what I used (And still do half the time) EV RE20 - Kick SM57 - Snare 3 Cad M179 Toms 2 Audio-Technica 4041 Overheads The above was about $1700 in mics to get a quality sound, and the mics weren't just voiced for drums like a lot of these packs are. I could use them for any number of things.
Umm… maybe if you’re buying from Samson or something really low end. A decent pair of overheads a 414 stereo pair for instance will run you over $2k just for overs not including close mics. I think it’s a great deal.
More expensive than several mic kits like Samson and Presonus, but the sE kit is a much more well rounded kit in my opinion. I used the Samson DK707 kit ($300) for years. Great kick drum mic and tom/snare mics sound great on toms, but the overheads are not that good and the tom/snare mic on the snare is not good. Ended up buying much better overheads and an SM57 for the snare to get a cohesive sound. I think the Presonus kit (also $300) all sound really good except for the kick drum mic. So yes, $1149 vs $300 is a huge jump, but the sE kit is an all around, GREAT sounding mic kit. Audix also has a great sounding, well rounded kit for $1049 but all great sounding mics. No need for replacements.
