@@MelindaMurphyThank you for your show last week !! Melinda you are so full of knowledge and sincerity and you have a talent for what you do. I hope you keep going. I am a cd person now but I still have all my vinyl records from the 70’s and 80’s. I sympathize with your problem getting others to appreciate what you do on your channel. Just hang in there and keep having fun with this crazy music thing. I love music…and I might as well listen to the best. That’s what I get from watching your shows. Take it Easy !! 😊
Yes, Fragile is one of those albums that was recorded with very little compression so it has a high dynamic range and that raw live type sound. One of my favorite sounding albums.
Dynaflex is indeed typically very good sounding. There an interesting story behind it. One of my earliest records in 1970 was a Dynaflex. I used to love to bend it into a U shape to show my friends. God we were weird.
Hello Melinda! Great video that kickstarts some memories. Pinups , got it for christmas when I was 8. Unfortunately , mine is not the Dynaflex vinyl. Mine is the UK pressing. HOWEVER ; I do have one Dynaflex record: ”It’s just begun” by The Jimmy Castor bunch, which I got for christmas the year before. 1972 , when I was 7. How about that for a vinyl-tale? Hahaha. Take care. A&R
I'm sure your UK version is no slouch. There's a good chance it's even better than the copy I showed. What's cool is the memories it represents. ♥️ You sure received cool Christmas presents. 🤗 Thank you and take care.
@@jackwezesa1081 : What a song ! What an album ! What a band ! What an artist ! I’m aiming for all 16 on vinyl , and got all except ”From the roots” and ”I love monsters”.
Pin ups is a very underrated album, love it. Sabotage rocks. I recently replaced my UK NEMS which I've had since I was a kid with the currently available BMG pressing. Sounds awesome.
I have to concur with your pov with Sabotage.A copper-bottom masterpiece. The acoustic work on 'Symptom of the Universe' never fails to inspire me with it's meliflous textures and nuances. They had much more to offer, other than cromagnon riffing i feel it's safe to say ?
Kudos to your RU-vid Channel, Melinda! God bless you! I'm a Yes fan, and Fragile is my favorite album and I have a pressing of this record that has great sound quality. You mentioned Robert Ludwig in your video. He's a superb sound engineer. Robert Ludwig is an 11 X Grammy Award winning sound engineer. Way to go Robert Ludwig! One other thing that I'd like to share with you and the subscribers to your RU-vid Channel. I grew up listening to Casey Kasem who hosted American Top 40 every week on Saturday from 10 am to 2pm. Every week at the end of his radio program, Casey Kasem would say, "Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars." Take care, Alan.
I listened to him every week as well. What a famous quote. Anytime I see those old program box sets I buy them. They are truly a blast from the past. Thank you and take care.
I just got done viewing your latest video. Some people here have mentioned your knowledge and that they still learn. I whole heartedly agree. What I have learned from you is no matter how bad your day might be don't forget your passion. Our's is vinyl collecting and enjoying our music. Melinda I say to you is thank you and God bless. Take care. ❤️
Hi Melinda, Great video! Enjoyed it very much! It was good to see Yes Fragile one step displayed. I have this as well. Great sounding album. I never heard the Quiex II pressing of The Nightfly. I have the Mofi and One step. Have to say the One Step shines! I love the Long Distance Voyager Moody Blues album. It's stellar! Especially the track "Talking Out of Turn" My pressing is an imported Polygram Audiophile pressing. It's so open sounding and detailed. Really happy with it. You mentioned the Steely Dan Aja album. Yes, the AB designation is awesome. I've heard the Cisco pressing rivals the AB one. I preordered AJA and Gaucho on UHQR from Analogue Productions. I have the UHQR of Can't buy a thrill. I must say...it's incredible!! I highly recommend the Steely Dan UHQR's They are worth every penny. Take care and have an awesome weekend!
Thank you for the recommendations. I'm sure they are good and I'm very tempted to pick them up. We'll see. The Yes "Fragile" One Step is one of my prized possessions. I just love it. ♥️🔥 I wish I had jumped on the One Step bandwagon sooner so that I would have the Donald Fagan "Nightly" One Step. I would bet it's the definitive copy but at $500 a pop, it's going to remain a mystery. I am very happy for you though. 🤗♥️ Thank you and have a great evening!
Hi. I always enjoy all your videos. Today I played my 2016 Fragile album for the first time in a few years. After watching your video I was a little nervous but fortunately I was lucky enough to get a perfectly clean copy. I read on discogs my OG 1972 copy is a “hot” pressing but it has a few pops here and there. I played them back to back but cannot decide which one I prefer.
Super video,, a few other inexpensive records that I would recommend, any OG Cars albums pressed at Sterling Sound they seem to sound amazing, and "True Blue" I bought it when it came out, dig the song, "La Isla Bonita" Next, I wanted to say Thank You again, for the shout out and great review of UFO last week, I was so glad to hear that you enjoy their music, have a great week.
I discovered your channel a couple of months ago and really enjoy your videos! I like how you not only talk about the albums you feature but also how you sometimes give a personal story related to particular songs or records. I love albums with history and nostalgia and hearing what they mean to other people. It makes me think of the movie High Fidelity and how John Cusack’s character starts organizing his record collection autobiographically. Thanks for the awesome videos Melinda!
Nice video Melinda! Love the corn detasling story. That's one farming job I missed out on although many kids did that for a summer job in our area. It was for corn seed company's I think? We were always too busy baling hay on our own farm to work out much. Some great info there Thanks and Cheers from Canada!
I have the original The Nightfly and it’s sounds amazing! Robert Ludwig mastered that one too stamped masterdisc! There are great sounding records throughout many originals and if cleaned properly (ultrasonic machine)they can sound CD quiet and dynamically amazing! Instead of immediately going for the “audiophile” versions try out OGs! You might be surprised! Great video as always Melinda! BTW you are correct Dynaflex was flimsy feeling but sound amazing! Herb Ritts was a personal friend of mine fyi!
I do love OG's and find them to be mostly good. I do enjoy certain audiophile pressings as well. I have a mix of both in my collection. Thank you and take care.
That Black Sabbath "SABOTAGE" LP sounds like it was pressed for the Columbia Record Club who would offer 12 LPS for $5 and they always sounded tinny due to cheap vinyl - The original Warner Bros pressing blew out my speakers back in September 1975 when it was released - it was a beautiful quiet pressing - same with Yes & The Moody Blues - the original first pressings were always on high quality vinyl - after 1977 they were competing with cassettes so they always used speaker-busting vinyl - Back in 1975 I was on first date with my ex-wife and I had a box of tapes with all kinds of music -The Beatles-Stevie Wonder-Genesis-Moody Blues-Renaissance-Montrose-Deep Purple-Wings so I asked her to pick one to play so she grabbed SABOTAGE hit play on the stereo and danced in the car while I drove to the theater to see a movie - I married her a year later and had 30 great years with her - your videos always bring back VIVID memories - Thank you Melinda!❤
That is a great and vivid memory. ♥️ It's great that you were married for 30 years. I'm sorry that is no longer the case. Hopefully, you are still on good terms. You might be right about this copy of Sabotage. It's flat and lifeless and the music itself is anything but. Thank you for sharing and have a great rest of your week. Take care. ♥️🤗
Cool Steely Dan presses, “Hey 19” was the first time I heard them at a local High End Audio store maybe 3 years ago, and have since collected all their albums, the two new presses which sound fantastic and preordered the Aja UHQR, great video like always, thank you!!😎🤘
Really nice episode! Weirdly, I found myself unwinding and all the tension just flowing out of me. I find your relaxed presentation and style just untwists me from the daily grind, well maybe the IPA I had while watching helped too :). Keep up the good work, we are all enjoying your channel. I sort of forgot how much I like some of Steely Dan's music, not a total fan, but I appreciate them. I will definitely be looking at the Moody Blues LP also Thank you Melinda. (Take a break, you don't have to respond, I know you read all of the comments and that is enough for me)
Thank you for such nice comments. I really appreciate the encouragement. 🤗♥️ I'm with you on Steely Dan. I like the hits a lot but didn't grow up as a big Steely Dan fan. Their records sure sound good though. Take care and I hope you have a great week.
I've never had a problem with RCA's Dynaflex pressings. I have a Dynaflex pressing of Nilsson's "Nilsson Schmilson" and it's pretty amazing. They did loads of classical using Dynaflex too and they're dead quiet and flat.
Melindas video and your comment woke my inner vinyl nerd. I only got one Dynaflex record , but now I’m on a mission. ”Once more unto the breach , my friends” - Shakespear.
Thank you for the video. You showed "Fragile," and I was reminded that I have the Yes Steven Wilson remixes box set, which contains "The Yes Album" through "Relayer." I don't remember playing "Fragile" from that set. I also have 2 other copies: a 2006 Analogue Productions pressing and an Atlantic 1972 pressing (don't remember if it's an original or a reissue; the jacket looks too clean to be an original). Maybe a sound quality shoot-out is in order?
@@MelindaMurphy The Live Ashbury Set has the best version of Symptom of the Universe I’ve heard …faster paced than the studio version .It is also on Past Lives . .
I recently bought the "Sabotage" box set for $ 37. It sounds great but of course it's only on CD that I know of. 1986 is still my favorite year & I was also 16 mist of the year. Driving for the first time has alot to do with it. Have a nice Day
Great video!! Nice to know the sound quality of all those records. I love Donald Fagen's The Nightfly. The song I.G.Y. was a huge favorite of mine when growing up and yes I also did not know the title of the song. I always thought it was called "What a Beautiful World This Will Be". LoL.
Sabotage! what an album that is I’d say it’s very underrated for sure! I have a NM UK first press on the NEMS label (with the textured sleeve) and it sounds frickin’ awesome, so get yourself one of those if you can (expect to pay around $50 it’ll be worth it). I have The Nightfly Onestep but I’m thinking of selling it. I don’t play it much I’m too lazy to play 45rpm albums most of the time so I just spin my original UK press - which sounds great anyway. Take care
I will probably have to upgrade my Sabotage album at some point. I enjoy the record too much to have a subpar version. Thank you for the advice. I don't sell records but I can understand selling something that is that high in value. Thank you and take care. 🤗♥️
Wow, once again some stellar finds!, I just came across a "MINT" Promo copy of Billy Idols vital idol at a price that was ridiculously priced at $10. 00 bucks and it opens from the top!!!! The sound quality is just exquisite. By the way ...I've always wondered why albums open from the side? Why not the top? This find is a Holy Grail for me because the only other album I have that opens from the top is the police synchronicity. Thanks for sharing the record store pics as well!
I'm not really sure why the opening was placed on the side of a record instead of the top? 🤔 It's cool when it is on the top. I love Billy Idol. That is a cool find. ♥️ Thank you!
I know you have more record's than i see behind you!😊 Great video, I got a all analogue version of "sidewinder" cut by Kevin gray for $21 brand new! Sound phenom!😊
As always, another great video presentation! Like yourself, I do have the Steely Dan Lp’s. I know VanHalen is your favorite band, and for myself it’s David Bowie. I have every original release of his, and all later release copies. The album Pin Ups with him and Twiggy on the cover is a must have if you’re a fan of Bowie. Thank you for sharing your insights on these records regarding quality and cost. Very helpful for those that might be looking or thinking to purchase any of them! 😁
Hey Melinda. I own The Nightfly by Donald Fagen in three digital formats. I have the original CD release from 1982, the Warner Japan SACD and the DVD-Audio release from 2002. As with Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits, which is also an early fully digital recording, the DVD-Audio stands heads and shoulders above the CD and SACD versions. This, along with Brothers in Arms, are what I use as my reference recordings for testing out new audio components when I'm in a position to upgrade. I also use them to demonstrate the ability of my own system to visitors to my home. Both are fantastic at showing how good an audiophile system can sound. Great video by the way. Cheers. 👍❤
@@MelindaMurphy I know you are currently using the Rega Planar 8 with the Apheta 3 cartridge I believe. Could you tell me what your other components are in your system? I only ask because I am a real component geek. I always like to know what other music lovers are listening to their favorite music on.
I’ve got that Moody Blues album and it’s one that I haven’t listened to nearly enough. Now, with your glowing recommendation, I definitely need to put it on the turntable more. Fragile is a fantastic record. This is one of those videos you do that I love because I feel like I’m learning something while I’m being entertained. Going to be looking for a couple of these others you showed. Have a great week!!
Hi Melinda, i see from several videos now that you like early Bowie, but did you ever check out his 1999 to 2005 work? There's 3 albums in that time span that i think are great!
I'm not familiar with his later work. I also need to pick up Black Star which was his final album. I have heard others say that it's great too. Thank you and take care.
There is a Chris Bellman cut of 'Sabotage' for Rhino that is worth checking out (he also cut 'Vol. 4' and 'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath' in the same run - 2016 I believe). Warners switched from the green label to the 'palm tree' label in ~'73, so all Warners Black Sabbath titles after 'Vol. 4' had the palm tree label.
I'm new to your channel and am really enjoying your insight. I just watched your video from 2 years ago and was delighted to learn that you are a fellow Rega P8 owner. I chose the Lyra Delos cartridge and it sounds sublime. Lucky us!
Definitely agree about True Blue sounding great (especially for the time it was released). I had a girlfriend at the time buy me it on vonyl and I was blown away how great it sounds. I still play it. How clean it sounds at the beginning of White Heat is one of my favourites. Another great sounding cheap, and thinner record is Boomtown Rats' Fine Art of Surfacing. Robert Lange's production sounds fantastic and it's a true hidden gem.
One sometimes overlooked group of "cheap" good-sounding records are the A&Ms which were originally pressed on the KC-600 vinyl. A&M often pressed their top releases in the early to mid 80s on KC-600. Synchronicity sounds fantastic, and the others I own are very clean (Styx - Kilroy was Here was another, some of Joe Jackson's records from Body and Soul onward; and all of those A&M/CTI reissues with the SP-9-3000 series catalog number which were all half-speed mastered...and there are many others I'm forgetting). Less affordable were the Canadian-marketed reissues in the A&M Audiophile series (catalog number starts with SPJ vs. SP), but those were mastered and pressed at the same facility, and on the same vinyl, as the original Mobile Fidelity releases from the late 70s. Also, good job on rescuing your Aja. I always thought the MoFi Aja (which I bought when it was released) had a strange tonal balance and never liked it. I did get a used "AB-1006" and it sounds so much better. Since Bernie remastered the UHQRs, I'll be curious to hear how those sound. The worst Steely Dans I had were budget MCA reissues and I think they were stamped "Platinum Series" (?) on the jackets--noisy vinyl was the worst flaw on those. And there's an idea for a shootout. Universal (Geffen) is releasing new pressings of these which were made from the digital copies that Bernie mastered around the same time as the UHQRs. I have Can't Buy a Thrill in both versions and so far they seem to be really close. I'm starting to think that last bit of improvement may not even be worth the price of the UHQRs. I do want to hear Aja and Gaucho on the UHQR pressings though.
It's a shame we can't listen before we buy isn't it? I'm with you, Aja and Gaucho would be ones I am curious about. There would have to be an earth shattering difference to justify trading out my records for under $5 for a $150 plus tax version. No doubt, they will be great. ♥️🤗 Thank you and take care.
@@MelindaMurphy I'm not even sure when they are being released. Acoustic Sounds has them listed with 2023 dates which doesn't seem right, as they would be out of sequence. Yet if not 2023, we wouldn't see any further UHQRs until Katy Lied next year. I'll keep you in the loop. 👍
Hi, Melinda! Great video as usual! YES the Dynaflex for some reasons they have a bad reputation for the ligthness of the vinyl, but they are made from virgin vinyl, and the 180grm is not allways a Brad of quality (both know this) and is all for the mastering and pressing process. Take Care, Melinda!
Wow Black Sabbath "Sabotage" loved that album. Another that i had on 8-track that i listened to endlessly in my car. Always wanted the vinyl LP but hard to find. Perhaps because it wasn't one of their more popular? Now that i've seen yours i will keep searching. Nice "Basement Tapes" T!
Hey Melinda. I used to have to wear a long sleeve shirt in the corn field and was allergic to hay ! Good memories! Well not really . I enjoy your videos . Take care.
Great video, Melinda! Love that Moody Blues album. The cover art is killer. Sabotage is my favorite Sabbath album. I have an early NEMS pressing that sounds great and I also have the boxset that sounds phenomenal. Not familiar with the pressing you showed.
I think the ones in the box set were the way to go. This is a first US pressing out of Terra Haute, Indiana - nothing to write home about. Lol. I can understand why this is your favorite album. ♥️ Thank you and take care.
Hi Melinda, greetings from New Zealand. I do enjoy your channel. Thanks for doing what you do, it has often influenced me in my purchases. However......what I do find frustrating with many reviews, including yours, is that the catalogue number is not mentioned. That to me defines the copy that is being reviewed. Be so helpful knowing that the copy I am buying is the same being positively reviewed.
Excellent point. I did try to mention if it was an original and even the pressing plant location when possible. In the future, I will try to put catalog information in the description of the video. Thank you for the feedback. 🤗♥️ If there is anything specific you were curious about, please let me know in a brand new comment. Take care.
Thanks Melinda. You are a star. Appreciate your friendly, warm, quick and willing commentary. I think even if you provided a written comment along with your video. Eg Albums reviewed today. Pink Floyd, The Wall catalogue # 123456789 Take care and keep bringing your bright breezy videos coming.
Hi Melinda 🌞 .. The choice of covers by David Bowie on Pin 📌-Ups is excellent & I first heard Live To Tell in the closing credits of At Close Range an intense film with Sean Penn & Christopher Walken. Love Heart Of The Sunrise on Fragile. Stay Cool 💧
I can clue you in as to good stamp on the Steely Dan album, if someone hasn’t already. Some time in the mid 70’s ABC/Dot was bought out by MCA Records. All of the old ABC Records were stamped with that horrible stamp with the new MCA catalog number. This was across the board with every album by many different artists. I have some where they just recklessly stamped the cover. I have my original 1986 True Blue, but I haven’t spun it in years, I need to give that a spin again. Finally those RCA Dynaflex albums. I have a couple from Charley Pride that I swear you can bend them completely in half. It’s a wonder they don’t collapse under the weight of the needle! Great video as always!!
Thank you for the information about my Gaucho gold stamp. That makes sense. 😃 The Dynaflex albums are very flimsy but sound surprisingly good. Thank you and take care.
@@MelindaMurphy With those gold stamp albums, the record itself could have either the ABC label or the MCA label. Basically they just used up whatever stock they had (jackets or records) after the switch.
Hi Melinda, nice idea for a video. Only goes to show that what a record needs is to be done well. Recording, mixing, master, pressing. difference in price reflects marketing and package, not necessarily the quality. sabotage has a great 2011 pressing by Chris Bellman, you should check it out. Cheers
You are right about Dynaflex. I have a few such records that were played a lot and I've never cared much about them, too. But they sound very good today.
Don’t worry about what people think, buy from wherever you want. I buy plenty from amazon. everyone does not have a good local record store. Also like saving some $$$ which helps buy more stuff.
My copy of Paul McCartney's "Tug Of War" sounds incredible, and I got it for only five bucks! The digital mixing and mastering is what makes it sound so good, believe it or not.
It does sound great. Even the recent reissues of the Paul McCartney albums sound wonderful. ♥️🤗 It was the case of digital done right. Thank you and take care.
A little late to the party here. In any case, some great selections here. I've long been a fan of film noir, so the Fagen album's cover really grabbed me when it was released. I was confused about the actual title of IGY too; I thought it was, 'What A Beautiful World'! My copy was lost in a basement flood, would love to find the audiophile copy you showed. In the late 60's and 70's I thought The Moody Blues were gods - and Long Distance Voyager was their 'comeback' album. I was very happy to hear their new song, 'The Voice' at that time. Madonna's 'Live To Tell' was featured in Sean Penn's movie, 'At Close Range', and it's my favorite by her. In closing, I've got to say that one of my best-sounding albums is from the Columbia House Record Club: 'The Doors Greatest Hits', and it sounds amazing! Thanks and take care.
@MelindaMurphy Just needed to amend my comment about the Columbia House 'Doors' album: I just compared it to my 45rpm version of 'L.A. Woman'. Though very detailed, the record club version is a touch bright. Take care.
Good thing sometimes you win with cheaper records to compensate for the expensive ones! You got great taste, i love Sabotage as well and i was satisfied with the one on Amazon a couple years ago. My fave of them. Ozzy's picture disc of No More Tears sounded surprisingly good too. Take care Melinda and keep shining. 😊
I will definitely be getting a different pressing of Sabotage. That album is way too good for a mediocre copy. This can be an expensive and frustrating hobby like demonstrated with my Sabotage purchase. 😳 Thank you and take care.
Hi ! I have different pressings of Sabotage originals from France or us too, but also recent versions like European super deluxe box set or the monomaniac box set and all recent versions sound great.
My experience with IGY was similar! I was a kid when it came out, and it wasn't exactly "my type of music" at the time, but I was enthralled by it. My cousin loaned me The Nightfly LP and it's been a top 5 fave ever since. If you can find the MFSL One Step, you definitely won't regret if you spend a little more for it!
I'm so glad you were able to get a copy of the One Step. It was meant for you to have one. I'm so glad it sounds good. I had no doubts. ♥️🤗 Thank you and enjoy! ♥️
Later in the 70's Nems re-released the Sabbath catalog in the U.K. from what I've heard, they used the same plates as the Vertigo pressings.and they're much cheaper obviously. I have a Nems pressing of Sabotage that I'm very happy with
Somewhat confusingly in the UK the first presses of the first four albums were on the Vertigo label, then Sabbath Bloody Sabbath was on WWA, the Sabotage first press was on NEMS and then Technical Ecstasy and subsequent albums are back on Vertigo again! The first 4 albums were re-pressed on both WWA and NEMS, so it can be a bit of a minefield really. I have some 1973 WWA represses and they do sound fantastic (almost identical to my Vertigo first presses) and can be picked up reasonably cheaply. Cheers
Excellent point about Dynaflex, Melinda - it doesn't usually affect the quality of sound - I have quite a few of them and they sound fantastic. I also picked up the reissue of "Aja" from somewhere - one of the online clubs - and it too has great sound. So...about that MoFi visit video...still waiting...heh heh....have a great week! - TC
Great video once again. I really like hearing about your collecting, good and bad. There are a few in my collection that disappointed me the worst being Def Leppards Hysteria. It's so quiet and lifeless and I've owned it since it 1st came out, I wonder if I got a bad pressing. I recently bought a live Stevie Ray Vaughan album as I wanted his live version of Texas Flood but it doesn't sound great, it's flat sounding but the studio albumTexas Flood sounds very good. Most of my David Bowie albums sound excellent although I don't have Pin Ups(should really as 1 of the tracks is called Rosalyn which is my full Christian name) I look forward to your next video.
You're right Hysteria sounds pretty bad and the 2 LP reissue is better but still nothing to write home about. I would love for a record label like Intervention to get a hold of it. They did Billy Squire's Don't Say No and their copy slams the original. Thank you and take care.
I've had the Donald Fagan recording on cd for a while now. I decided I wanted it on vinyl but could never find a copy. I wanted to "find" it and not order it online. About a year ago I was in a record store in Albany, Oregon and looking through records in the jazz section. I decided it was time to head for home, then thought to myself that before I go, I should check the rock section for Donald Fagan. I raised my head and there it was on the wall right in front of me!! 😀
Yes I have my original Moody Blues Long Distance Voyager. It was great to have Moodies back at top of the charts in 1981. They were first outdoor concert I ever saw, gave my original jersey to my daughter a few years ago. Love the Moody Blues. 👍
Get the 2016 Reissue for Sabotage. I think those reissues sound fantastic. True Blue is by far my favorite Madonna album. I have a Japanese press and US OG press. Both sound great. Rock on Melinda!
The Yes Fragile, Rhino Start Your Ear Off Right on clear vinyl sounds amazing to me. I don't have anything to compare it to though. Thanks for the vids!
This was a great video for the economic times we live in. With budgets shrinking, we really need to find great sounding records for an affordable price. You showed a number of good records, but the Black Sabbath Sabotage album caught my attention. You're so right about it being a killer album; it's one of my favorite albums in the Sabbath catalogue and among all albums I have. ❤ I love the songs Thrill of It All and Symptom Of The Universe on that album. It was the last truly great album that they made with Ozzy. I bought that vinyl album new as a reissue back in the 1980's, and it doesn't sound dull at all. Though not a first pressing, it sounds very good. It's possible that first pressing from other pressing plants are better, but with a little research, I'm sure you can find out what the best version is if you're looking to upgrade your copy. You used the "M Word" yet again. I don't wish M any harm, but to me her music is like finger nails scraping across the old fashioned chalk boards we remember in school as kids. If I had that record, it would be great for the bon fire. 😁 It's always great to have an inscribed and signed album from an artist you like or love. Congratulations on receiving that very nice gift! 😻
It was an honor to receive an autographed copy of that record. ♥️ I'm grateful. Sabotage is such a great record and I really want to hear all of the details in full vinyl glory. My copy is lifeless which shocked me coming from an early pressing. I will definitely be looking for another copy but I'm not happy that I already have $35 invested in the dud. I also feel bad passing a bad pressing on to someone else so I'm not sure what I will do with it. To be honest, it needs to be taken out of circulation. Lol. I will do my research and find another copy. I need to hear Symptom of the Universe on vinyl. ♥️ I'm glad you have a great copy of it. Thank you for the kind words. It's fun to discuss great sounding records that most people can afford. Take care.
Thanks for the Vid, here are a few great sounding reissues of albums people should be able to buy new at their local stores at a great price. Marvin Gaye - Whats Going on 50th anniversary done by KG, Neil Young - Harvest. Tom Petty - Full moon fever in Blue Translucent, The Doobie Brothers - the Captain and Me by speakers corner, Norah Jones - come away with me 20th anniversary, Beck - Sea Change and as others have already said you can get the current reissues of Yes - Fragile cut by KG and Donald Fagen - the Nightfly on 180 gram. All these you should get no worries brand new at great prices at a decent record store.
Great video! I wasn't surprised to see that Sabotage is the one you thought didn't sound great. It's my favorite Sabbath album. One of the reasons is that to me the recording itself is "good bad" if you know what I mean. It's raw, dirty, muddy, kind of trashy sounding album in a good way. It's kind of a precursor to other Metal favorites like early Sepultura, Celtic Frost, and Napalm Death that are lo-fi recodings and that's part of their charm. I've had a couple of CDs of Sabotage and heard a half dozen different vinyl copies while working at a record store but if I'm being honest the only time it souded "right" to me was the cassette copy I used to have playing on a cheap 80s walkman. All the other versions sound too clean. Anyway, if there is a better sounding pressing I hope you find one. Unfortunately I suspect it probably is the recording itself (meaning the production, not the music) that might be disappointing you.
Hi Melinda! About 20 years ago, I found several Bowie original pressings at a thrift store. It was a surprise for sure. I also found Black Sabbath's "Sabotage" but it's sort of beat. I didn't really care for that release. And a couple of years ago I found an OG Black Sabbath self titled. I love that record! Paranoid is good too! Looking for that and hoping to find it one day at a thrift store. You never know. It could happen. For me it seems that the '80s had some really good sounding records like The Pretenders pressings and even John Cougar Mellencamp's records. Madonna "True Blue" is a great sounding record. I think I have 2 copies of that. Love that release. Hopefully Madonna's health will improve and that she will be back to her old self. Or young self. Going to email you. I have something for you. ~ Nicola
Of my 20 Bowie LP's pin-ups is one of my favorites. This is the back story that I heard. He was working on new material, probably Diamond Dogs. The record company was pressing him to come out with an album, apparently they had a quota/time schedule. He got in a huff and went into the studio and recorded a quick & dirty knockoff of some of his favorite covers that he'd performed as a teenager in a very short period. I heard a couple of weeks so he could get back to what he was working on before he was so rudely interrupted. As I recall the critics panned it.
You make a very good point Melinda namely that it is the quality of the vinyl not the weight that counts Hell, "Nightfly" even sounds great as a download provided you play it through decent headphones! Thanks Melinda
Hello Melinda I was in Barnes and Noble this past weekend and noticed that the most recent issue of LIFE MAGAZINE is all about VAN HALEN...looks pretty interesting....know how much you like them!
I am a massive Yes head. They are my all time favorite band. I have 32 different versions of Fragile. My personal favorite is the AP Hoffman/Gray mastering. With that said, due to substantial changes in my system I really have to re-evaluate just about all of my previous opinions on all records. Before the huge upgrades I was of the opinion that Fragile was an inherently compromised recording that suffered from tape saturation which made it too dense to unravel. Not the case anymore. And not being the case anymore it forces me to re-evaluate it. With the right system this is an extraordinary recording. Also there is a Steve Wilson deluxe version on SACD or DVD-A that has his remixes, the original mix in a flat hi res transfer and a needle drop from the original UK vinyl. The hi res flat transfer serves as a great reference by which you can really judge all mastering choices made on all the different remasters.
Let me know what your new findings are and if you have the current 2023 Kevin Gray version on clear vinyl, please add it to the mix. Thank you and take care.
Pin Ups is a great Bowie record, a LOT of punch to that one. Favorite Bowie is Station To Station, RCA first pressing is expansive and warm. But XTC's Black Sea gets my vote for reference sound at a decent price. This was a nice episode!
Hey Melinda. Here is the blues album that you may appreciate. It is kind of hard to find but it is well worth the look. It is costing around $60 usually. It is called Terry Evans putting it down. Fantastic sounding audio file release. I believe it is from 1995 if I’m not mistaken
Nice video! Yeah, you just can never tell what something is going to sound like sometimes -- even when it looks terrible. I inherited my Dad's old vinyl collection about 13 years ago after he passed on. Most of it was beat to hell and had mold damage from being stored in less than ideal conditions. And the whole lot had a brown patina of nicotine from his years of chain-smoking in a poorly ventilated house. So, I picked out what I thought were the best ones and few sentimental favorites and discarded the rest. Cut to 5 years ago when I started collecting vinyl again in earnest. I acquired a decent turntable and decided to spin a few of my Dad's old records. And surprise of surprises, a good deal of them actually still sounded fantastic despite looking like absolute hell. He had a first-pressing of Beatles Red that actually sounds amazing despite some excess surface noise at the beginning of the sides - the gatefold is in shambles, though. And a first US pressing of Led Zeppelin IV that looks so bad I wouldn't pick it out of the bargain bin at my local used shop -- sounds amazing. Same story with a Hot August Night first pressing - the gatefold is in pieces but the wax sounds just fine. At some point, I plan on doing a deep clean of all of those to see how it improves the sound. Might try the wood glue technique on a few of them. But these are priceless to me all the same being heirlooms from my Dad.
The fact that they were your dad's records makes them very special. It's a shame they are not in the best condition but it is what it is. I do think a good cleaning could help a lot. I'm glad you are still able to enjoy them. I'm sure he would be thrilled. ♥️ Thank you and take care.
❤ your right about sabatoge it’s a bit muddy but sabbath bloody sabbath is too maybe more. You may want to get the new warners reissue of it. Pin ups has always sounded great I have the same one. Also I got the RSD pic disc ‘19 I think, sounds great too.
I will definitely need a different copy of Sabotage. I like that album too much to not have a good copy. This copy of Pin Ups is great. Thank you and take care. 🤗♥️
I have cleaned my copy twice. Unfortunately, I wasn't as lucky as you were. It's a great record but it's a shame that my copy is so noisy. Thank you and take care.
