Maudsley murdered one of his victims in the community, but the other three were behind prison walls after he was convicted. He killed one while he was inside Broadmoor hospital. As a Forensic Psychiatrist I've examined his case and in this video I'm going to tell you my personal insights from my professional experience and give you my theory on why Robert Maudsley killed his victims.

I wanted to write to Robert but was told by the prison that he didn’t want any correspondence. Very sad and tragic life and he should have gone been able to go back to Broadmoor and allowed to resume his therapy with the Dr he spoke with. Yeah seems like just wanted to kill people who had hurt people who couldn't defend themselves. Specially the first man he killed considering what he had been through I understand why he snapped as he was trying to show him pictures with pedophilia. I really don't think he's dangerous to regular people, just people who have hurt innocent people. It's evil how he has been tortured and treated differently than other prisoners, specially when not even child murderers are treated like he has been treated.

This is really sad, its painful to hear how he is still suffering to this day. I wish he could see all the love and support that he has. If the system properly dealt with pedos and “parents” who neglected & abused their children, then I feel like Robert wouldn’t have behaved in the way that he did. That sense of injustice and constantly being let down is a different level of suffering and an indirect abuse.

There's an excellent episode of "making a monster" about Maudsley in which the forensic psychologist who dealt with him most, Dr Adrian Needs, speaks at length about him. Dr Needs was sympathetic and said that Maudsley was exceptionally intelligent and could have made a positive contribution if the authorities had been minded to find some suitable work for him. Dr Needs also spoke at length about how severe childhood trauma affects people. He said that it traps people in the moment. For Maudsley, his childhood abuse wasn't happening decades in the past, it was happening *now* and great care had to be taken to avoid triggering those childhood defence mechanisms that had been behind the murders. He said Maudsley's treatment involved effectively getting him to look in a mirror - to realise that he was no longer the child who could be abused by his parents. He was now an adult and they had no power over him. Interestingly, Dr Needs theorised that in pretty much all serial killers, they are effectively reacting to some trauma that was inflicted on them by their parents or other authority figure in their formative years.

It seems that he did target specific prisoners and I cannot fault him for killing them given his circumstances. Those monsters he killed would have very likely re-offended once released, and ruined many lives in the process. It is no small thing to get past being raped. And he confessed right after. Regarding the torture, I have to wonder if the staff 'looked the other way' while it was going on?

How can torturing someone to death only be manslaughter? By the way, I remember seeing a video on him in the past and feeling sympathy for him. But as you mentioned we have to balance with the risk to others. I do wish they would relax his isolation under close supervision. I can understand why he requested assisted suicide. I should have waited to comment. My father was volatile and violent towards my younger sibling and myself. I won't describe the incidents because someone might recognize them. Some of it was rather unique. Neither of us grew- up to be perpetrators of violence but we have definitively had our issues.
@th8257
@th8257 2 года назад
Science is increasingly coming to the view that two components are needed to make someone a violent killer - "Nature loads the gun but nurture pulls the trigger". First of all, genetics or some form of other biological factor such as brain damage. Some people are genetically much more prone to extreme emotions and rage. They believe it's what may lay behind certain personality disorders too. Secondly, extreme trauma in childhood. A very high proportion of violent killers have had some form of sexual, mental or emotional abuse. That's why some people become killers and some don't. There needs to be both factors there to make some go over the edge - you almost certainly don't have the necessary genetics, which is why you haven't ended up like Maudsley.

I was physically and sexually abused as a child and thankfully did not become a violent person. I believe it actually made me feel like I deserve(d) this kind of treatment. Most of my relationships have been ones where I was abused either mentally or physically. I could probably write a book on everything I’ve been thru but it amazes me to read how people cope with trauma- no 2 people handle it the same way.

@APsychForSoreMinds
@APsychForSoreMinds 3 года назад
Thanks for the props, Psych geek. I think for some forensics psychiatrists, broadmoor (or any of the other high secure hospitals) is seen as the pinnacle, as you get to assess the most mentally and well and disturbed patients. On the other hand, the turnover of patients is very slow, so it can get a little bit repetitive working with the same people for many years. Some psychiatrists prefer medium secure units, as they get to treat more people within a set period of time. Does that make sense? Also, Broadmoor is quite secluded which usually means a very long commute, especially from London. When I worked there, I would only go in one day a week and would spend 3 to 4 hours travelling.

In the respect of Morals, what maudsley did was totally justified. But the lengthy torture showed he clearly was caught in the moment and possibly his inner child was doing that torture that he couldn't as a child. He clearly suffered immensely as a child. But, from another point of view "thou shalt not kill" also rings true, because if we all go around killing each other what would be left? It seems to me that Robert maudsley needed some real care and a whole lot of healing that he never got. And for that, I feel very sad for him.

As a Psychiatrist you clearly know how to assess people under your care however you are not factually correct about about what exactly happened at HMP Wakefield or the cell/unit he is in. There are lots of myths about Bob as you correctly stated, the cell and with regards to the murders at HMP Wakefield is one of many.

It's one thing to kill the scumbags that do awful things to kids, but David Francis was partially skinned while he was still alive and found with his skull cracked open like a boiled egg complete with a spoon stuck in his brain. There is something very wrong with someone that can commit that level of horrific violence on another. And what about those that have to clear up after something like that? Some nursing staff leave Broadmoor/Rampton/Ashworth suffering from trauma they never get over.

I think you psychoanalysis is somewhat off.Due to him suffering through drug dependance prior to the trigger that set off the 1st killing, I believe he was seeking moments of in-control where he didn't have to think he was Free- and when triggered Roberts PTSD created a manic psychosis - supposedly hes very smart and if he was of a grandiose state of "feeling in control" and just looking for another victim he would've waited for someone to come into his cell or had ego drive him to attack out of men he was initially attempting to coax into his cell. All murdered men were convicted of crimes that suggest they couldve had high controlling and narcissism, I once triggered he reverted back to being a child. just this time he was able to be free.........and then once the mania subsided he returned back to the controlled state.

Maudsley and his siblings were fine at the orphanage until he was returned to his parents who locked him up and beat the crap out of him.No wonder he turned out the way he did.Locking him up in solitary for 40 years is in humane and by all accounts his health is declining.The powers that be have placed him in the too difficult basket and thrown away the key.As Maudsley has said if he had killed his parents then none of these other people need have died.I wonder what would have become of him if he wasn’t returned to his parents.Apparently he has genius IQ.

Very interesting as usual. Robert Maudsley's story was disgusting what he carried out. However, when hearing his childhood and being locked up a lot, and still locked up constantly today its double sided. To be in care back in his day things must have been bad as some children are left with abusers now in these times. Feel very conflicted with my thoughts on Robert. The 9 hour pleasure from his abuse on David Francis, got me wondering the pleasure vs pain that the brain seeks. I am no where near the education that you have, but feel free to voice them openly to you as you are open to these awkward conversations, and educating also probably constructive criticism if required, which is healthy. A trade off for self worth and all that anger from unspent tears and past fears.
