Personally I find this pretty funny and I'm sure he did too if he was able to watch it back and get a translation of what he was saying in Cantonese... kind of like how in English "mist" means a light spray of liquid but means feces in Germany... or something along those lines. We don't know we're saying something hilarious till they explain it to us but it's hilarious when they do. But that's just my take on it.. Also given that in real life Tony Jaa has a real goofy, friendly, fun vibe about him I'm sure this was all perfectly fine. He was simply unaware of what was so hilarious.
Some word in Hong kong cantonese and Malaysian cantonese are bit different. Me i learned Malaysia cantonese, but i can understand now all Hong kong cantonese meanings aswell. Some word are said differently, but not all of them. Color > Thai: See(sii) = "Shit/poo" -cantonese White > Thai: See-Kou(kao) > "Kao see" means play with shit/poo and well it just said the opposite way so it reminds that = "play with shit/poo" -cantonese Poweder blue > Thai: See-Fa = "shit/poo flower" - (Fa means flower in cantonese.) Green > Thai: See-Keau = "Shit/bad idea/plan" -cantonese Coffee/Brown > Thai: See-Nam-Dang = "Whatever" -cantonese Black = Thai: See-Dom(tam) = "Shit/poo puddle" -cantonese Rainbow = Lai-Lai-See(Lei lai sii) = "You shit/poo on your pants" -cantonese
No, they weren't being disrespectful. The women at the end said I really wish I could explain to mister Tony that the sound of some language to another can be hilarious. I'm sure someone explained to Tony afterwards why they couldn't stop laughing. They weren't laughing at Thai language or Tony, but the sound and meaning of their own language (i.e. Thai to cantonese). Just miscommunication/understanding. Also, you can feel the energy or mannerism of the pair weren't being disrespectful. They just can't stop themselves from fits of laughter cause it sounds hilarious in cantonese, especially the meaning to them.
They could've discussed the concept with him, he seems like a good sport. This doesn't make the hosts look good, especially in light of the culture they come from.
Don't think too much . Thai people never take it seriously and found it funny too. Our culture is so open-minded . You can make fun of our language or scold our PM/ goverment . We still found it funny or OK. I heard some chinese used ladyboy as reference for joke . For example there was a very beautiful and feminine man . Someone said He was imported from Thailand. (he is a ladyboy) . I found that funny too.
Hosts are stupid in they delusional supremacy. There are lots of languages and there is always a chance that word of your language will sound like something quite different in other. The hosts just could first explain what happens and then they could all make laugh of that. They could say some Chinese words that sounded funny in Thai. I really like Tony but I'd love to know exactly what when down when he was shooting Ong Bak 2 - personally I love the film despite it getting a lot of hate but there were all kinds of crazy rumours during it's production. Thai mafia involvement, Jaa going into hiding as a monk, family embezzling money, black magic. You could make a film out of that alone.
No offend brother, they always did to most celebs and the male anchor seems to be admired Tony a lot therefor they cannot say till the show end bc of the effective of the show. They are friendly to each , the male anchor possibly learn Muay Thai bc of Tony .
I am a cantonese, this is not funny. Both of you being celebrity showed no respect to other country’s language. You selectively picked Thai words that read as “shit” or “poop” in cantonese. I'm Thai and I honestly don't give a damn because it's funny as hell, I even showed it to my friends and we all had a good laugh. These kinds of things are what make life enjoyable. Don't try to spread those bigoted western-style mindsets into Asia.
