As a Pediatrician, I talk about poop on the daily. Parents often show me their baby’s diapers either in person or via a picture. Poop talk doesn’t faze me and as a parent, it shouldn’t faze you either. It’s normal. And hey--everybody poops!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here’s some things to know about infant poop:
💩Very first stool passed is meconium-a dark green/black, tarry substance that is the first stool passed after birth
💩Over the next 2-3 days, the stool will begin to transition to a dark green and yellow, seedy color.
💩Stool can be various earth-tone colors-yellow, brown, green, etc.
💩Once feeding is established and baby is gaining weight, some babies can go days without stooling-occasionally even 10 days!
💩Babies will make many faces when trying to stool (grunts, grimaces, strains). This is baby trying to coordinate the muscles needed to pass stool. It’s a new feeling for them and they need practice. But they can do it!

When to notify your clinician:
✖️If the poop is red, white, or black in color
✖️If the baby hasn’t pooped in 3+ days AND is straining and is uncomfortable as this could be a sign of constipation
✖️If baby isn’t pooping, has a distended (puffy) belly, and is not feeding well and/or making wet diapers
✖️If baby is having loose poop AND you are concerned of weight loss.
