Dr. Ann is an outstanding instructor. Probably another reason kids presenting with epiglottis don't cough is because there are no sensory receptors on the epiglottis that regulate cough.
On the Brudzinski- if pt is placed supine on a table, and their neck is passively flexed toward their chest, in the presence of meningeal irritation, the pt will flex their knees in response to the pain. With respect to the Kernig, pt is place on table in the supine position with the hip and knees flexed to 90 degrees. In the presence of meningeal irritation (meningitis), if the pt's knee is passively extended, the hamstring muscle may spasm and pt will express pain in the lower back.
Is it just me or what, but I think there was an inadvertently slip there concerning Kernig and Brudzinski. Nonetheless, this was a fantastic lecture. Thanks, Dr.!
