Bud, I have had a Dometic fridge in Land Cruiser 100 series turbo diesel, since 2010. I use a lithium 100 amp hour battery it runs for 10 days with out recharging. Before I go away I run the fridge on high from the house power “240” in Australia then drop down to low when I get to my camping spot. The battery charges from a DC. DC charger from the L/C.
@budnixon

Makes sense, fridge is efficient for the most part

VERY nice job! I think that's the nicest drawer system in an R50 I've seen. I like the attention to making it no higher than the back of the back seats - just a bit lower to create a lip. I think the lateral well idea is excellent - though it does assume you won't be too tightly packed on the top of the drawers. I find it is pretty easy to squeeze my seats, privacy tent and other long items in through the side of my load. Was that a magnet you used to hold them in place - nice touch!. Compressors in that rear cubby is a pretty common R50 mounting point. I like how yours is rigged to the rear panel though, that's a clean touch. I also like the ability to access the panel from the back seat. I think if I built one, I might make that a little deeper as I really liked your idea of it being another organizational area. Consider tapping the plastic hook anchors with 1/4-20 and you can put stainless eye hooks in there for anchor points. Also as an FYI the two tabs in the roof don't mount into much - I've thought of anchor points there but they wouldn't be able to hold much load. Also, a net on the roof works well & stays above the rear window line. I put jackets, hats and other light stuff up there.

Thanks, beauty of "custom" build and application, is everyone makes it how they see/fit right to them and their gear/way of laying things out. There truly isnt a "right and only" way to do this, as you've probably found out - everyones selection of stuff/junk varies by a lot, some cook basics like cup of noodles, while others like to carry more utensils than their home kitchen :) :) :) Its a long ways from being done in my book, but most likely will never get there and end up moving onto another vehicle, I'm looking at the 5.6L V8 options of the next gen R51 models, need the v8 for towing... but love this thing
@TheKPDX
@TheKPDX 2 года назад
@@budnixon Absolutely, modifications are for how you use it. Between my Mom and myself, we have 3 offroad trucks and each one has a different application and is modified accordingly. Personally, I like a pragmatic, cost effective approach but with the appearance of a clean build. Yours is very nice! Some great ideas there for sure. Now that I have a 2nd R50 for hardware store/hauling applications, I might just rethink a low drawer system for my Pathy. Curious, what did you do with the under floor cubby, did you repurpose it or is it just empty space now? Once you've moved the spare to the back, several of us have considered adding water, fuel and even an air tank underneath in that space.
@budnixon
@budnixon 2 года назад
Lots of ideas for the underside, currently that cubby is empty space, but I'm thinking may be cut it open, and flatten it out to make it easier or more convenient to install other necessities under. Fuel, water and air have been on my list as well, but I'm trying to stay away from overdoing "concept" as there are simpler solutions. For example, repurpose the space where spare was with couple of the Trail'ed Round cans that will mount right up, and just a matter of plumbing them to do whatever the purpose

Always been curious about the R50 platform and you easily have one of the best builds. You mentioned a Tough Dog lift but I haven’t seen anyone selling a lift for the R50 from them in the US. great video Bud. I live in Gresham and picked up an 03 Pathy this past Christmas and love what you've done to yours. The ARB OME Heavy Duty struts should handle that weight just fine. I have 170# on the front of my Pathy (~100# bumper/~70# winch) and it feels great up there. I had to do 2 drives before I put those struts on and with just the bumper it was downright dangerous.

2002, possibly the best R50 year as it retains the throttle cable which is superior to Nissan's version of Drive by wire that appears in 2003. Also, 2001-2002 has the highest LSD breakaway at 65-80ft-lbs., earlier & later are much lower.

Since you’re running everything off your AGM battery, how long/how much power till it doesn’t have enough juice to start the vehicle? That’s what I’m mostly concerned about vs running a traditional lithium ion/lithium iron phosphate power station setup
@budnixon
@budnixon 2 года назад
I agree on the concerns, this I carry a portable jump pack. Another note to keep in mind - fridge is the biggest consumer - it has safety shut off if it senses voltage drop due to battery been drained. I dry camped for 2-3 days, charging my usual accessories (phone/drone etc) - hadn’t been a problem yet. It’s about finding the sweet spot, but same goes for spending money in right direction and not overdoing it on things that aren’t as important. Take for example option to install a wireless remote start on your rig (sold inexpensive now days), many have a volt monitor (or can be added) - thus as soon as the remote start senses battery drop below 11.7-11.8v (or whatever is needed in your case) - it would start the car and run it until battery voltage is back where it’s safe. Just an idea
@justincuarte5485
@justincuarte5485 2 года назад
@@budnixon Thanks for the reply! I also have a qx4 and yeah I don't really want to be spending $1500-2000 CAD for a beefy power station like the Jackery, when I could use that money towards something else. I am planning a 2-week road trip in August with friends and we will be sleeping in each other's vehicles for some of the nights for the trip (3 vehicles, 2 in each). I assume I wouldn't have to worry about discharging my battery if we are sleeping 6-8 hours every night and most of the time we would be on the road driving, so the car battery would be charging on the go and running the fridge at the same time (going based on your setup)? Planning to do a mini/temporary conversion setup with a bed platform, portable fridge, mini kitchen drawers with supplies, portable stove/grill, power station of some kind (wanting to do a similar set up to yours), etc. Also going off on your comment about the remote start is a very good idea! Will look into getting a 2-way remote starter anyways in the near future probably closer to the trip as I live in SK, Canada where our recent winters were -40 to -50 Celsius lol. 🙂
@budnixon
@budnixon 2 года назад
@@justincuarte5485 Sounds like you are on a good start as far as direction where you are heading. Yes, I've found that a good deep cycle battery will do the job just fine, especially if you are moving everyday and only stationary 1 night at a time, as well as fridge - you can turn it off overnight as it will "hold" cold fairly well for the most part, considering you wont be opening it at night for anything vs daytime/while cooking, reaching for various things all the time, like drinks etc. Packing fridge correctly is also important to keep in mind, things that are ok to be "almost frozen" or frozen are for the bottom and things that arent - i.e. dairy/veggies/greens - top loaded to prevent frostburn/going bad. Good luck with the trip!
@TheKPDX
@TheKPDX 2 года назад
@@justincuarte5485 Definitely get a Lithium Jump Starter - there are very good ones from $35-85. They really have made dual battery setups for start security obsolete. Generally speaking, I've stopped carrying jumper cables and have a jump pack in all my vehicles - I've used them more on stranger's vehicles than my own.

@budnixon

@budnixon
@budnixon 2 года назад
Factory rails are too week and too tall for my liking, in such application
@TheKPDX
@TheKPDX 2 года назад
The OEM roof rack (i.e. load bars) are rated fro 100#, one assumes that a dynamic capacity and stationary would be more. I have carried far more than than with no problems. At about 2002 they made the load bars much more robust than previously - I know of many of the old load bars breaking. The roof rails connect to the truck at 6 spots have a fairly large surface area so if you remove the load bars, the rails can probably hold alot more, especially static loads. One thing to consider is having your weak point be the connection from the rail to the load as you don't want your roof to be the weak length. There area a couple of R50s that have torn out their roof when the truck's unibody flexes under a rack that's too tightly adherent and rigid.
