It makes me chuckle how a PM who is said to be a financial genius thinks this is good news. In two years my rent has gone up 40% , gas and electricity 300%, insurance 30% for each one (car, home and pet) with weekly food and none food costs going from £400 for two people a month to £850. Don’t forget council tax and any services like internet, mobiles, car fuel and subscriptions all going up, then any credit you have the interest has doubled, credit card interest has shot up. And yet he stands there telling us this is all fine and the new normal. And don’t worry it’s only going to go up 2.3% this month. Oh really really! 🤔 Bottom line these prices are here to stay and continue increasing. Erosion of household surplus being eaten month on month. That thing on the bank notes 'I promise to pay the bearer a pound' refers to a pound of silver. That would be £400 pounds now so a loss of 99.75% in purchasing power of the pound since 1785 or whenever. The 10% inflation per annum we've seen since the 1980s is no longer balanced by the extraordinary deflation caused by Chinese people becoming good at making stuff. So the price of stuff is going up. Rich people have got rich with inflation but nobody else understands this stuff.
@laiceystone9202
@laiceystone9202 23 дня назад
And while I'm ranting - my parents bought a house after college. It took me until my 40s. Younger people won't have any chance. That's inflation. The great thing is once you have paid the mortgage off you have more money coming in than you need so you can invest in assets. Assets go up with inflation so you get more money. Younger people will be living more hand to mouth with rising prices and won't have spare money to throw into assets. This causes a transfer of wealth from young to old or poor to rich. Yet the solution to every problem is to print more money and the establishment actively encourage new problems. They've figured out what inflation does.

I 100% agree with your comment at the end. I used to be strong left, but have come to realise now that voting left or right is just a wasted vote and what i actually want to see is competent leadership designed to benefit the British public and the United kingdom as a whole. A great example is the argument of public or private ownership of the railways. Ultimately, I don’t care who owns it, just make sure that trains actually turn up, on time and at a price that’s competitive and comparable to that of other countries. You could say the same for the NHS, ultimately what we want is a service that delivers good quality, but instead we’re tied up in this public/private ownership landslide.

The real TOTAL rates of inflation should include ALL aspects of prices & costs that affect people. The asset prices of the rich (the 0.1%) have been deliberately excluded to hide the effects of QE (the legalised counterfeiting of our Fiat currency). So what should be included? Stock markets prices, Bond prices (corporate & treasury), house & rental prices. The inflation figures that successive western governments have been publishing are false, with sensitive other aspects deliberately screened out. This has not been called out by the financial media, who should be qualified to expose this misinformation scam. So the financial media are complicit. Sorry for the rant, but this really annoys me.

If you want a change then don't vote Lib/Lab/Con, vote for some other party as a massive f*ck you to the mainstream ones. Really what we need is a complete overhaul of our politics and while we're stuck in the Tory/Labour cycle nothing will ever change. That's why many people would like PR. They'd have to work for our votes then. Right now Labour know how bad the Tories are, and how unpopular. Due to our terrible first past the post system they know they are the only real alternative, smaller parties have no chance. If we had PR, they'd arguably have to try and make a go of it with the help of the smaller parties. The smaller ones then could demand more for us all. Sorry to go off topic but I've been stunned by my apparent lack of understanding ISA rules... I just transferred cash from my Interactive Investor stocks and shares ISA to my Trading212 stocks and shares ISA and the amount has been deducted from my annual allowance. I thought that if you transferred then it stayed within the ISA wrapper?? Or does this just apply to transferring actual shares from on ISA to another and not to cash? Very confused! I asked their chat bot about it and it confirmed it was treated as new money.

I really don't understand the base rates and housing...Can somebody explain it to me, genuinely? If interest rates are high then that feeds into mortgage costs, which will feed into renting likewise, which will add to housing inflation, which will then need interest rates to go up or at least remain high, evidently, but that will simply add more inflation, won't it? When housing costs are so much of inflation, I don't see how increasing interest rates is an effective tool to manage inflation... Similarly surely a great way to remove housing inflation is to reduce the base rate. What am I missing?

So from what I understand the BoE is not reducing interest rates as they know inflation will increase again in the near future?

Great video as usual Damo. I’ve been trying to explain to people all week that the CPI figure is the ‘this looks good’ number, and doesn’t tell the whole story. Nobody listens so it’s nice to have a comments section full of like minded people! 😂

This is the best analysis I’ve heard about why he’s not done this in November! I’m sure it’s a multifaceted decision but no doubt using this figure given the financial focus of Rishi’s mind this is a large one.

Since Brexit in 2016, and for years before in fact, our inflation tracks EU inflation closely. It proves the power of corporations to manipulate all our domestic markets. The government permits it

Maybe I"m being pedantic and it could be the colour shift of the image, but Damien you might have a bit of blue colourblindness. Rents is more green than yellow in the graph. Unless you consider that shade of greenish ...to be yellow...since it's not as green as the council tax then maybe. I actually got confused for a second when you said yellow. the graphs colours are mostly on the blue tinted scale. Like I said....i'm being a bit pedantic. Don't mind me too much.

What is the long term average of inflation? Trading economics reported that the long term inflation fate from 1951 to 2024 is 4.89%. The idea you can artificially keep inflation between 2-3% and not allow wages to rise at the rate of inflation reduces peoples standard of living and induces a recession.

Another excellent video explaining in terms the average person can understand, why none of us 'feel' our living costs are back to normal. Hope you had a great time away with your mum. Keep up the brilliant work.

Do you think there is an angle that Gov are telling the public inflation is back to normal to try and break the service/wage inflation spiral. If the public believe it is settling then the drive to seek pay rises should reduce which in turn reduces the associated inflation?

You said it yourself, housing will come down when the rates are cut. So doesn't that mean that the higher rates are driving the CPI(+h) inflation?
