The initial segment was quite damning. The whole Jiabao fiasco though, is about Jiabao herself stretching and doing all sorts of mental pilates to support conclusions that are less believable than Narnia.
as a malaysian im highly confused.. parents pay so much for a TEENAGER to tutor their kids? why not get a retired teacher to tutor ur kids ? i mean for 800sgd, the tutor better have a masters or PhD.. just saying idk.
retired teachers sometimes aren’t as updated about the syllabus -> so sometimes recently graduated students have the advantage on this + masters/phd doesn’t mean they can teach (in university, some of the most acclaimed profs in research can’t teach for shit) - but yeah $800 is really quite steep
As an academia myself... yeah, this is _serious_ thing. What's the point of genuine learning if you just plagiarise left and right? I'm so embarrassed and sad for whoever doing this.
That apology... "I will be more careful in the future.." The depth of the plagiarism shows it wasn't a one-time 'mistake' kind of thing but more like it was just how she did things. It wasn't a lack of due diligence.. it took *effort* to plagiarize that much. What she needs is better integrity and respect in crediting her sources.
6:10 Lol one of the original sources to her plagiarized tellonym response actually condemned people who put out disclaimer to pre-apologize for their mistakes, yet she was exactly doing that in her answer. The self-centeredness is honestly astonishing. 😂
I get that taking her admission may seem harsh; however a few universities such as UCLA are competitive and many students put effort and some don’t get in so if she did plagiarize her paper she really doesn’t deserve to go those colleges.
Is brook lim just a product of her circumstances? An extenuation of the current problems with the method of scoring for GP? A reflection of the rigidity of GP questions and the exams? Scoring A for GP has always been a case of strategising which model essays to “lift phrases” from, as taught from our GP teachers. Ignoring university’s strong stance against plagiarism, the whole JC GP life was about knowing how to take elegant beautiful phrases from model essays and memorising strong arguments for a certain topic, then regurgitating it out to answer the question.
Given the parents’ strong inclination towards willing to spend money for their kids to score A in singapore, i doubt any parents will care if it comes at the expense of plagiarising, as long as their kids get their A. Such is the plight of singapore education
i somewhat agree, even in sec school and jc so many people just memorise sentences, paragraphs for GP. So I can see why content is plagiarised because for the most part in GP, this happens. But calling the ED essay her own is just not it. So 2 different issues here and I think calling a plagiarised work purely her own, especially on a topic that is sensitive, is not great for a GP tutor.
the reason she plagiarised.... is cos you REALLY learn not to plagiarise in uni. before that, you can probably get away with it, but at the uni level, that's when they come down hard on plagiarism.
That's not really an excuse, though. Secondary school students *are* taught about plagiarism and citing their sources and how to quote and all that. And she was an IP student... her teachers must feel so personally attacked right now.
@@kyris66 Uhhhh not true. In secondary school, all exams are closed book so unless you're a god at memorising stuff word for word, plagiarism isn't an issue so it's not really taught to ppl. You only touch that in poly & uni
“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.” - Me
if she didn’t choose to cover it up by saying that everything was written by her, this wouldn’t have been a problem. it was clearly copy n paste + paraphrase work
1. I still think it is a major achievement to do so much at such a young age and if the material did really help me get an A for GP which is really difficult to do, the only thing that matters is that she did not give credit where due. Which, although very unprofessional and foolish, I'm willing to forgive and forget because of her age as long as she gets her materials in order for the future. 2. 6 figures can be as low as 100k. Very far from 1 million. 3. That being said I really don't like her fake accent. She needs to improve on that.
