Influencers Are Romanticizing Materialism and Encouraging Overconsumption Culture

Many influencers promote a culture of instant gratification and impulse buying. This leads to overconsumption and a lack of consideration for the long-term consequences of the actions. Whenever influencers recommend a product, it often sells out immediately, which demonstrates that people make impulsive purchases of products that they don’t truly need.

Lol. This was literally RU-vid beauty influencers back in the 2010s when I was a teen. It’s not going to end guys. It’s just gonna keep evolving with different items.

This! We have charity shops in Germany like Godwill in the US and I'm moving in 9 weeks, so I sort through my stuff and there are things I sell, things I throw away cause they have holes/ are damaged and all the things that are still good/ whole but I don't want to take them with me are going to charity. I really don't understand this throw away cause I don't like it anymore mentality.

I don’t have TikTok so seeing what is going on there from afar is so bizarre. I, for the life of me, can’t understand how you need so much stuff, but I bet I wouldn’t question it so much if I consumed content like that every day.

I get that it's kind of a fun escape to watch these influencers but also we're supporting their overconsumption. They make money from views. And us buying the junk they promote. I watch a few and it scares me how much stuff I bought because I was inspired or influenced from RU-vidrs. Kinda sad....I never would've known some of this stuff existed if I didn't watch.

No we need to call out these influencers too you can refuse brand deals and promote ones you actually like. No one is forcing their hand. It's just greed and wasteful and also their careers would probably have more longevity if they did that which would mean a continued income instead of schilling out as much as they can for a quick buck.

4:10 I watch videos while doing other things and I swear I heard an MLM whistleblower on RU-vid say this exact line and she was not Asian. I don’t think that voice belongs to the girl saying it. It doesn’t matter that much to me cause I’m not the original girl who said it, but I’d bet money on it that she’s using a voiceover of someone else’s work. Maybe I’m absolutely wrong. Idk. If it was an image over my words, I’d look more into that.
@SofiaVIBritania

It's really common for "asian" influencers to do that so they can reach English audience faster and better, there is also a thing there that if you don't speak a perfect English without accent you will be really shamed for that ( like " you don't go to school /you are from the countryside or you are poor blabla ) so maybe you're right idk ...

Shein is not good but you can not insist you know how things are over at that factory without actually being there yourself. At least that woman made an effort to go and see for yourself. You just choose to sit here and bash based on the propaganda/brainwashing of other mindless zombies. Should you buy a whole new wardrobe worth of clothes every single week REGARDLESS how the factory conditions are and how their staff is treated? No. You should not. I don’t see how good or bad conditions for workers in China have anything to do with your consumption. Are you saying that if each employee in Chinese factory made $500 per hour, it would be alright by you to buy 300 new pieces of clothes every week? You don’t need to dunk on how Shein is being run. You don’t know what you don’t know. But you can still try to deinfluence people away from shopping as much.
@nataliaperez9954

Yeah ok. I am brainwashed and will not purchase anything from temu or shein for the literal fact that I don't need to buy trash like a millionare...😂
@gibbygibbygibby7237
@gibbygibbygibby7237 7 месяцев назад
concerning shein, an actual reporter covered a story on the shein factory worker abuse. so, that exists to counter your point. “Channel4’s documentary, Inside The Shein Machine, sent undercover cameras to film factory workers who were forced to pull 17-hour shifts to make hundreds of garments a day. In one factory, they made a daily base salary of $20, which would then be docked by $14 if any garments had mistakes.” A quote from the Time Magazine article (Shein Is the World’s Most Popular Fashion Brand-at a Huge Cost to Us All, 2023). Edit: And, additionally, some people want to be conscious consumers and buy ethically. They don’t want to support terrible work conditions to get them their $5 t-shirt. If the worker exploitation wasn’t so far removed, for example you can actively see the kitchen staff in a restaurant being abused and then you get your meal, it would affect you differently. Not caring about workers creating for your consumption is giving NIMBY.

Sometimes it’s better to log out and take a step away from the internet when you feel the need to share an emotionally charged argument that you know good and well won’t even lead to a productive debate. I recommend writing fruitless rants like this on a scrap of paper, setting it aside for a day then reading it out loud to yourself or to a close friend that can be honest with you. Cause tbh…this is not…normal. And If you need attention there are healthy ways to attain it. Try slam poetry. Busking is fun. Volunteer at the animal shelter - you won’t be ignored there and the animals are longing for attention too. I used to pick fights online or post contrary incoherent arguments/borderline troll bait when I was lonely. Or angry about something in my life I couldn’t control. I just don’t want to see anyone else go down that destructive path ❤ 🌷
