Engine OM654 is a newly developed 4-cylinder diesel engine
with common rail diesel injection system, multiway exhaust
gas recirculation, single-stage turbocharging, exhaust after-
treatment with the third generation SCR system and optimi-
zed thermal management. Engine OM654 will be introduced
in the new E-Class.
The following goals are achieved with the new OM654:
• U niform concept of a single engine family
• Suitable for different drive concepts
• Increased output
• W eight reduction
• R educed consumption
• Compliance with future emissions limits
• P otential for development with regard to reductions in
consumption and emissions
• Improved noise behavior
The special features of engine OM654 in brief:
• Common rail diesel injection system with 2050 bar
• 8-hole piezo injectors
• Aluminum crankcase with Nanoslide cylinder wall coating
• T andem oil pump integrated in the crankcase
• T iming chain on the flywheel side for driving the
high-pressure pump, the oil pump and both camshafts
• Gearwheel drive for the balance shafts
• Oil spray nozzle shutoff valve for controlling the oil spray
nozzles for piston crown cooling
• Aluminum cylinder head, four valves per cylinder, two
overhead camshafts
• Multiway exhaust gas recirculation with cooled high-pres-
sure and low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation
• Cylinder head with 2-piece water jacket
• N ear-engine mounted combination of diesel oxidation ca-
talytic converter, diesel particulate filter and SCR catalytic
converter
• Exhaust aftertreatment with SCR
• Load-controlled preinjections and post injections
• T wo balance shafts (Lanchester)
• Compliance with the Euro 6 emissions standard
• ECO start/stop function
• Quick-glow system with glow output stage
• 1-stage turbocharging, variable turbine geometry with wa-
ter-cooled bearing housing and E-actuator

Having researched this engine expect a grand for lifters, and tappets soon after 100000 miles and 1500 quid for a timing chain soon after 160000. From what i gather it is caused by the DPF as it fills up as the lifters fail on the exhaust side due to the back pressure as the DPF fills up.... And i believe if you get a failed DPF regen it puts diesel into the oil, or if you force a regen it puts diesel into the oil.. So if you get 3 or 4 failed regens an oil change is required.

WOW bro you are the KING! Recently I started to have problems with 654.916 engine - engine sounds plus maf check engine error. Got myself into research but met with enigma - the rockers on exhaust side fail always, deteriorate much faster than other side? And this is a rule! Tip of the hat for your conclusion, truly enlightening! Much respect!

Awesome engine ‼️ There are only two other things left for engineers to do on the diesel ICE to complete its full evolution. 1. electric motor driven diesel fuel injection pump, 2. An ISG say 4kgm, which takes over drive during stalling speeds so to eliminate the clutch interface from the drivetrain. This way the ICE maybe able to be paired directly to the CVT.

Makes little sense to drive the pump with an electric motor. The pump needs to run when the engine runs so it needs to be driven all the time. Ok less parasitic draw it might seem BUT the power needed for the pump is proved by the alternator anyways 😅

@alouisschafer7212 common rails strive to produce even pressure at the nozzles irrespective of engine speed. So a DC fuel injection pump would do just that while at the same time reduce the stress on the crank pulley. About its power requirement, yes only a mild hybrid electrical architecture with a comprehensive regen system would work. Where an Integrated Strater Generator would not only power this pump but also the airconditioner. If this ISG can also drive the car through the stalling speeds then wolla, Direct Drive CVT transaxle has arrived😉

The fault code P049 indicates a low flow rate of the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) low-pressure system and a pressure that is too low on the OM 654 engine. The EGR system recirculates a portion of exhaust gases back into the engine intake to reduce emissions and improve fuel efficiency. When the flow rate or pressure is too low, it can affect the performance and emissions of the engine. Here are a few possible causes and solutions for the P049 fault code: 1 - Clogged or dirty EGR valve: A clogged or dirty EGR valve can restrict the flow of exhaust gases. Check the EGR valve for any carbon buildup or blockage. Clean or replace the EGR valve as necessary. 2 - Faulty EGR pressure sensor: The EGR pressure sensor measures the pressure in the EGR system. Loose connections or damaged wiring can cause issues with the EGR flow rate and pressure. Repair or replace any faulty wiring or connectors. It is recommended to have a professional mechanic or an authorized Mercedes-Benz service center diagnose and resolve the P049 fault code. They will have the expertise and specialized tools to accurately identify the cause of the issue and perform the necessary repairs.

And mercedes engine om654 and om 656 needs better quality valve parts or should i say longevity of parts built in this piece of sh.., since they are worn out after 47452km and longer warantee,more than of 2 years and i forgot mercedes promo "best or nothing"

Lets place a bet on how long the rocker arms, camshaft and timing chain on these last. I will win. Nobody can make anything good these days and Mercedes was always a problematic engine builder in the recent past. Hate me for saying this but the only good in production diesel in Mercedes vehicles is the 1.5 dCI from Renault.

This engine is junk. Rockers going out at 60-100k Water pump is tandem and it fails. In order to replace it you need to remove engine! And take apart like half of engine. Timing chain wears quickly.

This has not aged well. No longer work on these 1, the parts cost a fortune and the wait for them. 2, Customers need reviving after being told the cost , it is then quickly traded. So many manufactures have placed the timing chains between the engine and the gearbox, then the PLASTIC guides fail , chain jumps ...Bang 60-80,000 miles you are on notice...

Un desastre de motor. Problemas de árbol de levas,taqués,turbo.Válvula Nox,sensores,cadena de distribución etc… Me ha durado menos de 5 años y 286.000km Jamás volvería a comprar Mercedes
