It’s nice to see that Scotland offers you a place to feed your zen aesthetic! The infrared images are extraordinary. An entirely different way of viewing the scene. Thank you! I’m not likely to spring for an infrared camera, but I do enjoy what you are doing with it. Congratulations on the book!

It’s a great place, I shot IR there a couple of years ago with the Hoya filter. No tripods allowed so had to get creative and long exposure was also a challenge Your B&W conversions are stunning. There’s something quite striking about IR B&W Andy

I’ve an infrared converted camera that hardly ever gets used - likes in the boot of the car and probably has a flat battery. I think it’s fair to say, I’m now inspired to get it charged up and used. No doubt a vlog coming in a few months time. Thanks John and loved the little plug for the book 😉👍🏻

Really interesting shots in infrared John I have been to that location and have a lot of similar shots in colour but not nearly as interesting as yours.😀

Thanks Malcolm. Yeh, I'd shot it in colour before too. Thought I'd use the IR camera for a change as I hadn't used it for a few months!

I’d love to see how you post process your IR images
@JohnMcKennaPhotography
@JohnMcKennaPhotography 2 месяца назад
I pretty much process them as I would a black & white image. The RAW file has a strong colour tint but I remove that using a combination of temperature control and saturation, then the rest of the processing is just the same as you would do for a visible light B&W image.

Hi John, I researched infrared conversions and/or filters. Came to the conclusion conversion was best. After a lot of looking, I got to the site you mentioned and have now purchased a fuji mirrorless and the conversion. I think, I hope…I’ve not just paid for a conversion. Anyway I’m now very excited 😆
@JohnMcKennaPhotography
@JohnMcKennaPhotography 2 месяца назад
Great stuff! Depending on the conversion you might still need some filters.

Wow, what GORGEOUS images John!!! I dont know much about infrared photography at all, so this video was really, really interesting... so much so it makes we want to go out and get a filter just to have a play! Is it just 'a' filter or are there different types that do it all differently? Would love to see a video discussing it all in depth, showing how to get the image in camera right through to print. can they only be Black and white? *runs off to scour the tinternet for more info....

@JohnMcKennaPhotography 2 месяца назад
Thanks Sandy! The camera I use has been modified (both the IR and UV filters have been removed) so it shoots "full spectrum" - everything from IR through visible to UV. I place filters on the lens to limit the light to just a narrow band. In this video I was using a 910nm which is quite far into the IR, so the images are only really suitable for black & white conversion but you can use filters closer to visible light and these can be rendered in "false colour". I made a video about false-colour IR photography (with editing tips) here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZYM3slHsmOA.html

Thanks John, nicely done. Do you have a problem with "hotspots" if you use a small aperture on certain lenses? I have a Nikon Z6 fully converted for B&W, and the smaller the aperture I use, the more intense the "hotspot" becomes.
@JohnMcKennaPhotography
@JohnMcKennaPhotography 2 месяца назад
Thanks David. The lens i was using does have a IR hotspot which is a lot more noticeable at shorter wavelengths (around 720nm and 800nm in particular) but its not too bad at 860nm and above. I can usually remove it by applying a radial contrast filter to the raw file

John cracking shots. Is your camera converted?, what do you see when looking through the lens?. I have filter but it’s got to be on tripod, long exposure and can’t see anything. Thanks John 👍
@JohnMcKennaPhotography
@JohnMcKennaPhotography 2 месяца назад
Thanks! Yeh its been converted. Both the IR and UV filters have been removed so i have to use a filter to restrict the light. On this video i used a 950nm IR filter but i've got 3 or 4 others so can vary the wavelengths for different effects. Still to buy a UV pass filter to try UV photography. The short video clips of the scenes in IR are pretty much what i was seeing when i was shooting

I looked under shop, and noticed it shows camera models some say conversion as you will have noticed. It showed a picture of fuji xe1 I chose that and ordered it…I thought!. It was £275 🥴guess that is cheap but I thought it was used. J

@JohnMcKennaPhotography 2 месяца назад
Ah, yeh, I see that on the website. I think that's a conversion price, so you supply the body and they do the conversion to whichever spec you select on the page. I'm sure if you contact them they'll refund, or suggest an alternative. I found them to be really helpful

magic pics , i,m looking to convert to 720nm infrared can i ask your choice for 950nm over the 720nm.thanks AS
@JohnMcKennaPhotography
@JohnMcKennaPhotography Месяц назад
Thanks Alex. I use both wavelengths but I find the black and white conversion is easier for files shot at 950nm. Both give great results though! (I also have 680nm, 760nm and 850nm filters and they all give different results.)

Hi John, I know you do infrared. Are you able to tell me where the best place would be to get a camera converted to infrared, and approx cost I would be looking at? thanks
@JohnMcKennaPhotography
@JohnMcKennaPhotography 2 месяца назад
Hi Jacqueline. I bought mine already converted. There's a company down on the Isle of Wight (web site: www.infraredcameraconversions.co.uk/) they do conversions or you can buy an already converted camera from them. If you go to the website, select shop then all the options are there. I think I bought mine for around £200 a few years ago.

Yeh I try to use it very rarely as the images can become a bit "samey". Last time i used the IR camera was in Japan in December so i figured it was due an outting!

John, I am so sorry to bother you. I hope you can help me a little. I have made a payment to the camera conversion and I looked at a camera model that I chose. I have now received an email from them saying when they receive the camera…..! Do you know if I have paid for a converted camera and will be receiving it to me? Trying to keep this message brief. Thanks. Jacqui

@JohnMcKennaPhotography 2 месяца назад
Hi Jacqui. Sounds like they are expecting you to supply them with a camera body which they will convert? Was the item you ordered listed as a converted camera? I've had a look on their website and the already converted cameras are listed under shop>already converted cameras Is this what you ordered?
