Ingenuity - Mars - Helicopter - Rover - Perseverance - The Mission Ends - Hi, I am Phil Konstantin. On this episode of Travels With Phil", we are going to Mars and look at Ingenuity: "the little helicopter that could".
.
Since 1964, NASA has been sending spacecraft to Mars. The first landing took place in 1975, and the first rover landed in 1997. Since then rovers Pathfinder, Spirit, Opportunity, and Curiosity have explored the surface of Mars.
.
The Rover Perseverance and Ingenuity helicopter were assembled here at the Jet Propulsion Lab in California. Ingenuity was attached to the underside of the Perseverance rover. Ingenuity had to be specially designed because the Martian atmosphere is only 1% of the Earth's.
.
Rover Perseverance and the helicopter Ingenuity launched in 2020 and landed on Mars on February 18, 2021. After landing, it was detached, and began its travels. Let's look at the area which Ingenuity explored. Jezero Craters was believed to have once been a lake with an inflow and outflow channel. It has one of the best preserved examples of a delta deposit on Mars.
.
Flying in an atmosphere only 1% of Earth's, it had to be especially designed. It weighed only 4 pounds. It was also comprised of lots of off-the-shelf technology. Its blades spun at 2,537 rpm.
.
While it was designed to only make 5 flights over 30 days, it made 72 flights over almost three years. Ingenuity's last flight was on January 18, 2024. It completed 128.8 flying minutes, covered 10.5 miles (17.0 km), and reached altitudes as high as 78.7 ft (24.0 m)

Ingenuity Helicopter Highlights (per NASA/JPL)
NASA's Ingenuity Mars Helicopter has completed 72 flights since first taking to the skies above the Red Planet on April 19, 2021, far exceeding its originally planned technology demonstration of up to five flights. The many highlights of Ingenuity's historic and successful activities on Mars include:
The first aircraft to achieve powered, controlled flight on another planet, a feat that's been called a "Wright Brothers moment". Successfully flying in the extremely thin Martian atmosphere. Previewing areas of Mars of possible interest for the Perseverance rover to explore. Paving the way for future aerial explorers at Mars and, potentially, other space destinations.

Ingenuity Mars Helicopter By the Numbers (per NASA/JPL)
NASA's Ingenuity Mars Helicopter arrived at Mars on the underbelly of Perseverance on Feb. 18, 2021.
.
In the more than two years since landing, the helicopter has greatly exceeded its planned lifespan and evolved from a test of the first powered, controlled flight on another world to working to support other goals. Ingenuity has taught engineers about operating a new type of flight vehicle in the Mars atmosphere, and has taken stunning aerial images that have helped scout the Mars surface as never before.
.
Here are some of the highlights of the mission:
Ingenuity was the 1st helicopter on another planet
Ingenuity has completed 72 flights
Ingenuity has flown 11 miles
Ingenuity has spent 128+ minutes in flight
Ingenuity spent just under 3 years active on Mars
Ingenuity reached a highest altitude of 79 feet
Ingenuity assisted the Perseverance rover by scouting out the rocky Mars terrain ahead
.
NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of Caltech in Pasadena, California, manages the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter.
