Michael Fassbender has a german father & was born in Germany but his family moved to Ireland (his mothers country) when he was only 2 & he grew up there. Hi Ket & Kot!😊 Nice to see you crazy kids. Christoph Waltz gives an excellent performance here as Hans Landa. This film really launched his international acting career. That was a good catch, Ket!😉 Most people don't realize that is Michael Myers. Shoshana (Melanie Laurent) is a French actress, but she actually is Jewish. Tarantino has been known for making historic films with alternate endings. Great reactions to this refreshing alternate version of history, Pillow Hero Kids!!!!🎬👏👏👏👏

Fittingly, while the character is a curse on the Gestapo, the actor is one on the German film industry. besides this and maybe one and two other good movies, he is known only for the worst, most tasteless, soulless, generic garbage movies that wastes the budget of our state movie fund. As a Frenchman, I've always been amazed by Christophe Waltz's French. I would also say that the French word for "black" is "noir", so it's not what you think at 13:40. It is indeed the bad word they used. Also, most of us can speak at least one more language besides French (I can speak English and Spanish, for example).

"I'm gonna give you a little somethin' you can't take off." Fun Fact: After this movie, Rod Taylor retired. Taylor watched multiple videos of Sir Winston Churchill to get the former Prime Minister right. Hands Off Fact: In the scene where Colonel Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz) strangled Bridget von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger), the hands doing the strangling are those of writer and director Quentin Tarantino. Historical Fact: When Francesca (Julie Dreyfus) mentions former UFA actress Lilian Harvey, Joseph Goebbels (Sylvester Groth) throws a tantrum and screams never to mention that name in his presence. Lilian Harvey had to flee Nazi Germany in 1939 after helping Jewish choreographer Jens Keith escape to Switzerland. Truly Cosmopolitan Fact: Roughly only thirty percent of the film is spoken in English, the language which dominates the film is either French or German, with a little Italian. This is highly unusual for a Hollywood production. Colonel Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz) speaks the most languages in the movie: Four (English, French, German, and Italian). Casting Notes Fact: Despite playing father and daughter in this movie, Denis Ménochet is only nine years older than Léa Seydoux. Quentin Tarantino was considering abandoning the film while the casting searched for someone to play Colonel Hans Landa, fearing he'd written a role that was unplayable. After Christoph Waltz auditioned, however, both Tarantino and producer Lawrence Bender agreed they had found the perfect actor for the role.

Also, Americans enjoy making fun of ourselves, using the stereotypes bestowed on us by Europeans. But, it's important to remember that these are still stereotypes. We're not stupid. We're not culturally unaware. We don't all only speak English. #1, our country is MASSIVE. We can't just jump in the car and drive to another country like many Europeans can. #2, we don't have paid "holidays" where we can spend weeks at a time, traveling to other countries. #3, we all have mandatory foreign language classes in high school. Depending on size and funding, these are usually Spanish (Latin American Spanish) and French. This makes the most sense because of our proximity to Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Canada. #4, whether anyone likes to admit it or not, we have been the top global superpower for decades (and are closest allies with Great Britain). This means that, obviously, English has become more and more necessary for people in other countries to learn, for the main purpose of job acquisition. In previous decades, most Americans spoke multiple languages because of the high number of immigrants from all over the world, who came here to survive. Another very important factor is that we have Hollywood. Our movies and TV shows have been an extremely valuable and highly demanded global export (as evidenced by your own channel). Naturally, people have grown up learning English by watching American media. My cousin, who was born and raised in Norway, learned English entirely by watching American movies and TV shows. My point is this: please do remember that American stereotypes are exactly that-- stereotypes. It's important to recognize that what you see and hear on TV or from friends, isn't necessarily true.

The movie inside the movie is an exaggerated version of "our" movie, the main story. We get pleasure from seeing Nazis get theirs and think it's ok, just as the Germans love the meta movie. That part about Landa not liking the "Jew Hunter" nickname, I think he pretends to hate it to scurry sympathy with Aldo. He thinks by framing it as "some of them were Jews", that it's just a part of his job, it would help him secure a deal with Aldo's superiors with favorable terms. Men like Landa doesn't suddenly dislike their title, unless it doesn't benefit them.

The shot of the cream was important. At the time of the war, cow's milk was scarce in several regions of Europe and reserved only for people of high rank, and only in some areas. So, they used pig lard to make cream and butter, reserving dairy products to only milk itself. Jewish people cannot eat anything made from pigs. So, not only did Hans Landa order her a glass of milk to remind her of the day he slaughtered her whole family, but he essentially forced her to eat something that is strictly forbidden in her religion. You can see him watching her eat it, with pure joy on his face. He loves to torment people. We see this in the opening scene. He drinks several glasses of the dairy farmer's milk, which would have been already carefully rationed: most going to high-ranking German soldiers, and only a little for his own family. He KNEW the family was hiding in his home before he even went in. There were already check marks next to each name on his paper, which indicates that Landa knew they were there and knew they would be "taken care of". He tormented this man, his family, and the hiding Jewish family for his own sadistic pleasure. What I love about the dynamic between Shoshanna and Colonel Hans Landa is that Landa knew exactly who she was, but he didn't consider her to be a threat at all. In his mind, she was not even worth a bullet. In his mind, she was just a Jew, just a girl, just a young person. He assumed she was weak, frightened, submissive, and lacking in dignity or strength of any kind. He assumed that she would be too afraid to fight. After all, the first time he saw her, she was hiding under a floor then running away and crying. As intelligent as he was, he had NO IDEA about her brilliant plan. 😂

Awesome that you guys loved the movie! I also loved his use of languages in the film. As an American, though, I will say that 99% of us will never have a single point in our lives where we need to know another language for any reason(except Spanish.) Half of the 1% who does speak a European language could maybe use it on a vacation. The other half of the 1% either has a language for work or has close family who use the foreign language in the home. For almost every American knowing a language like German or French or Polish is about as useful as knowing Latin. You'd just never use it. As for most Americans not wanting to watch movies with subtitles - that's true. I watch everything with subtitles because it helps me retain information better but most people say they don't like it. I think that's because it's different as, again, most Americans will rarely watch things in foreign languages so they're just not used to it. That being said - every person I've dated has converted to using subtitles because once they're used to it they prefer it. My parents have switched as well. I do think reading subtitles while watching does sometimes cause you to sometimes miss some nonverbal communication. I use the terms "99%" and "1%" as extreme example as these are not the actual statistics. Technically about 20% of Americans speak another language, half of those are not American born and the majority of it is Spanish. So 10% of American born Americans speak a 2nd language and a majority of it is Spanish. It's fair to assume that as you add generations of separation that statistic gets even lower. Point is most Americans whose families have been here for multiple generations don't speak any other language and don't ever need to. Over 90%.

Latin is, quite literally, a dead language. There are zero "native" speakers of it in the world and likely less than 100 fluent speakers in the world. Italian and vulgar Latin have about the same amount of lexical similarity as French, Portuguese, Spanish, and Italian have with each other. Which makes it not mutually intelligible. As for mentioning Latin roots in medical terminology as a reason for learning the language of Latin....I mean....that's just so logically flawed I don't even want to touch it. How out of touch and delusional does a person have to be that their point of contention is that Latin is a useful language to learn outside of being a priest and learning it is a worthwhile use of time.@@PillowHero-jd6ie

In America, we have the term "Gallows Humor". The Gallows are literally the platform that people stand on before they are hanged. If you aren't familiar with the exact name in English. But Gallows humor usually refers to jokes told in an awful situation to alleviate tension.

The chapters are very incongruous. The first chapter is one of the best movies I have ever seen, and if it was a standalone would have won the Academy Award for best short film. The rest of it is 50% not-too-bad and 50% pretty good. But that first chapter is just amazingly sublime, and without it, this movie would just be a piece of trash cinema

I almost agree with this, though I don't think I'd call any of it BAD by any means, but the whole opening scene and the basement bar scene totally outshine the rest of the movie. They are probably my two favorite scenes Tarantino has ever done, but yeah if you removed them this would probably be my least favorite of his films.

@@ZeroOskul Every scene with Waltz in this film is great. The writing is really good as well & there's so much trivia and so many references (especially for German audiences, like the Winnetou & Edgar Wallace thing) that it definitely would still be far from "trash cinema". Death Proof might be the closest Tarantino has ever come to plain Trash cinema.

It’s funny that most of these ‘Nazis’ they killed weren’t even Nazis strictly speaking. Nearly all of them were wearing the Heer lapel insignia (except for Landa, Göbbels and that Sturmbannführer)

Liked your comment about the language at the end. I prefer natural language as it conveys the actors abilities better. But unlike a lot of Americans I like to read. Train to Busan wold have been ruined if it were dubbed in another language.

“Oblige him!” And at that point I knew I was watching a masterpiece Tarantino movie. And as a Massachusetts native to get the Fenway Park reference right after… 🤌
