Onychocryptosis, or ingrown toenail, is a condition that occurs when the edge of the nail grows into the skin, causing pain, redness, and inflammation. This pathology mostly affects the big toe but can occur in any of them.
There are two types of ingrown toenail:
-Side, which is the most common.
-Previous that appears when the nail incarnates forward.
There are several causes for ingrown toenails, for example; ill-fitting shoes, constant and repetitive pressure on the toe, deformed nails, frequent long distance walking, trauma, and improper nail trimming.
To treat this problem, the doctor will examine the patient's nail and ask several questions about their symptoms. Medical tests or X-rays are usually not needed.
Depending on the state in which the nail is found, the doctor can opt for a conservative treatment instead of a surgical intervention.
In conservative treatment, a smooth cut is normally made with a scalpel on the ingrown nail and then tensors are applied to educate and correct the shape of the nail so that it corrects its course and avoids resorting to surgery.
For the surgical intervention, the doctor will inject an anesthetic into the base of the affected toe so that the patient does not feel pain during the intervention. After this, the patient's finger will be wrapped for 10 to 15 minutes with alcohol-soaked gauze, after which time more anesthesia is applied to the fingertip and a smaller portion of the proximal nail fold on the side to be operated on.
After that, the entire area will be washed with chlorhexidine, an antiseptic with bactericidal action. Subsequently, all the foam will be removed from the surface with saline and the area will be disinfected once again, but this time with iodine.
Once the area is covered with the sterile field, the surgeon will proceed to make a longitudinal cut in the nail with dissecting scissors, leaving the nail barely visible between the affected nail fold and the cut. With the help of an instrument called a Gouge, the doctor will finish cutting the entire nail matrix, and later with another tool called a straight halsted forceps, holding the fragment of the nail to rotate the ingrown part and then pull it until it is completely removed.
Once this was done, the doctor will carry out a detailed inspection of the intervened area to make sure that no nail remains were left. Once verified, the specialist will clean the area with saline solution and proceed to cauterize the intervened tissues.
Finally, the affected area will be covered with antibiotic cream, then the finger will be wrapped with a compression bandage, which will be removed until the doctor indicates it.
During the next 48 hours the patient will be recommended to apply a cold pack, rest, antibiotic cream at least 3 times a day, as well as the use of analgesics.
It is important that this intervention is carried out only by experts, so please, if you have this problem, before undergoing any procedure, verify that your doctor is certified. Your health and that of your loved ones is the most important thing.

The method I personally use is: 1.) get some nail clippers 2.) identify the location 3.) grab the skin around it and pull it away as much as possible 4.) clip away at the area starting from the front 5.) if some can’t be reached by trimming away grab some tweezers 6.) if tweezers are used get as best as grip as possible 7.) pull the leftover nail out (hello pain) 8.) after getting as much as possible out apply disinfectant (i.e. neosporen) 9.) put on a bandaid (stronger the adhesive the better) 10.) continue on with one’s daily routine

I suffered from an ingrown nail on my big toe for about 6 months. I tried my absolute best to get it out but it was too painful and I just learned to live with it. One day, I stepped out of the shower and noticed something on the edge of my toe. The water had softened up my skin enough to allow something to poke through. I looked closer, it was the ingrown toe-nail, growing out of the side of my toe. I grab a pair of tweezers and pluck out this nail that's probably 1/4" long from an exit hole in the side of my toe. 6 months of pain gone almost immediately. I'll never forget how disgusting but satisfying it was.
@joshuamendivil784

Dude the same thing happened to me, after a long hot shower my skin was malleable to the point where I could just pull the skin back, lift the nail with tweezers and trim it as far as I could without getting hurt with toe clippers, immediately I felt relief and when my toe got dried up, it was like nothing ever happened 🎉

I had this surgery a few years ago. Before it, my toenail was so bad that it started growing inside from both sides, and my toe was so swollen that even a blanket falling on my foot would cause pain. During the surgery, the doctor had to give me painkillers 5 times because it still hurt like hell even after the first 3 shots. After the surgery, there was annoying pain like an itch for about 30 minutes, but after that, it was paradise. The toe hasn't bothered me since. If you have an ingrown toenail in a pretty critical condition, do this surgery. It is pretty short, and it's really worth it 👌

@satyamsingh3 I guess it depends on the surgeon. I'd had the same surgery before this one, and my nail started growing again a year later. Only after the serious surgery where my nail was cut in every place imaginable, did the nail start growing normally
@LJ_S1K
@LJ_S1K Год назад
@@satyamsingh3 I had this on both my toes as a kid up until middle school. It took the 3rd procedure for it to finally stop. The first two times I got the procedure done by a regular nurse practitioner and the ingrown nail came back within the year both times. The third time i went to an actual foot doctor(Podiatrist) and he told me that the nurses who did the procedure before were doing it wrong and he promised me that it wouldn't happen again after his procedure. I got the chemical matrixectomy procedure where they cut out the affected area and then use a chemical to burn the root of the nail in that area so it won't grow back in that direction. I guess the inexperienced nurses weren't applying the chemical right to get rid of the root permanently. Well looks like he was right my ingrown toenail never came back, I'm 29 and both my toes are ingrown-free ever since, almost 20 yrs. My recommendation is to find a good Podiatrist but everyone's situation is different so idk

I have suffered from this for almost eight years. All because of improper nail trimming and tight shoes. It started in 2013. As the years went by I slowly accepted the fact that I really need to have this surgery done on my foot. But the pandemic came, going outdoor becomes restricted, it began to heal slowly without me doing anything. Now it's fully healed. Edit: Additional info. What I did was during the pandemic, I let the nail grew so long until the hurting part of the nail came out forward. After that, the flesh began to heal since the nail stopped poking it from the inside anymore. Now I only trim the nail on the front not like what I used to do before.

I've gotten the surgery on my first ever appointment with a foot doctor. The surgery is pretty common, but unless there's 2 different types of toe surgeries you forgot something VERY important. After they take out the ingrown nail and the very slim amount of nail attached in the way you described, they then apply acid to the part of your toe were the nail would grow from so that part doesn't grow back. There's still a chance that you'll get ingrown nail in the side of the toe you had surgery on, but I can tell you that I haven't had one in five years since the surgery. I'm genetically proun to ingrown toe nails and yes there's some you can get out on your own, but then they're some that are so deep an so far to the side that you can't get out without surgery. Also be careful about your doctor an ask how much nail they're going to take off before you have them do it. The older/old school doctors will just take half of your toe nail when they only then to take a smiggine. If you're proun to getting ingrown toe nails going to nail salon an getting a pedicure once a month also helps prevent them since they can more properly an easily not only cut your nails so the dont/have a harder time digging into the sides of your toe but will also cut out your more minor ingrown nails.

I suffered for around 2 years before I had enough and decided to do something similar to the video myself. I cut down as far as I could and then carefully pulled at the rest of the nail with some tweezers. Before pulling with the tweezer I slowly cut a straight line with a scalpel on the rest of the nail where the scissors wouldn’t reach, mainly as a guide. Luckily it was a perfect straight cut/pull. I cut out around 2-3mm of nail. I did the obvious by cleaning, disinfecting etc. I also kept applying germalene cream to area 2-3 times a day. It was the best thing I ever did as I’ve never had the issue since. Thinking of it now it must’ve been around 3 years ago. If you have the confidence to try it I would. I really didn’t hurt that much at all. The most uncomfortable part for me was pulling the off the back part of the nail and the disinfecting afterwards, but tbh, it’s not as bad as you probably think. I’d do it again without hesitation if I had to.

I've had ingrown nails on the big toe, and I solved it by cutting and pulling out the part that was growing in the wrong direction, using only regular wound disinfectants I have handy, then treating it with an antifungal cream for a few days. Use lots of dressing to minimize bumping with other fingers and shoe discomfort. Obviously the more time I've had to spend wearing shoes, the more pain and slower healing. They don't grow at that crooked angle that hurt me any more, but it also didn't stop growing there the first time. I had to cut and pull from a really deep part, and when that healed it continued to grow normally.

Had 0 pain throughout recovery, though they did prescribe pain meds. Had the stitches removed a few weeks later and my toe looks like I never had any type of surgery lol!

For anyone The correct way to trim nails is to cut at nearly straight line. Do not cut at curved angle because the side can grow more to the side. In the long run, your nail will grow completely straight and you will never have that "uncomfortable feeling" anymore.

i use cuticle-cutter to dig at the corner of nail and just cut the corner. Sometimes have to use the tool found in manicure kit to lift the corner of nail and cut with another hand. Takes everything in me to lever up the nail so cutter can reach there. Never went to doctor for this issue because doctors are kind of sadist😀 nowdays.

I fineally learned how to take care of these myself. I bought some ingrown toenail nippers. I soak my foot first in very hot water to soften the nail and skin. Then I cut down into the corner of the ingrown toenail at an angle. And use some tweezers to pull it out. I also bought this special file that’s thin and I can push it down to file the side of the toenail. It’s been helping me to keep it from getting inflamed.

Happened many times: put something like cotton below the toenail so it goes above the toe and not pushes inside. If it is not enough, you can cut a bit of the toenail (a small piece so the toe is no longer wounded) and watch carefully for the next days the “new” toenail doesn’t take the same path. If does, apply cotton below before is too late.

I used to get ingrown toenails every couple of weeks for about a year, and I just HATED the thought of walking to school. I would get it on one of my big toes and occasionally on the index toe, idk why tho. I would trim the nails as well as I could and it would be a brief period of relief until the pain came back again some time later. My feet sweat a lot in shoes, especially when it gets hot in the year, so in addition to regular ingrown toenails, the site would also be infected and swollen so it hurt even more when I walked. So finally I just got sick of doing this every time and asked my parents if we could go and do this surgery thing. It was a quick procedure and they removed like half of the toenail on the big toe and when I tell you that it was the best relief I had in my life. It was so nice to not have to walk with a limp all the time

I once had this issue almost every month and I had to do the operation by myself everytime it gets worst. Luckily, this doesn't occur to me now as I change the way I cut my toenail. The secret is you need to trim the nails in a straight line and avoid the curve form when cutting. This will allow your toenails to not grow and dig deeper to the skin base on my experience.

Since there those giving their experience and remedies, here's my two cents: I dipped my ingrown nail in water until it was soft, grabbed clippers (scissor clippers and the metal rod, I think called cuticle pusher, work best) and clip just about the edge, then, if you left your nail in water long enough this should be easy, pull back the skin and start pulling out the nail and clip it at its end. Once removed, apply disinfectant and, after every shower and/or as often as you see needed, pull back the skin around your nail. For those curious how bad mine was. My ingrown nails occurred on both my big toes and was a constant problem but the worse happened in my late teens were I started getting puss come out of my toes with every step. Any visit to the doctors worries me about the bill that'll come with it so I tried this method and it worked for me. Once I removed the nails I saw that the nails had split into basically a "Y" shape. Almost to the point that it would've dug through my toe and poked out. If I'm not careful I still get ingrown nails but nothing to that extreme anymore.

One day I ended up telling my mom about it and my toes looked so swollen and infected. I still can't believe I would walk around with my toes in that condition, especially with the pain, don't ask why I didn't tell my mother about it because I don't know either. Luckily in the end I got the ingrown toil nails removed (sides) on both toes. It was such a big relief to have it removed. Since that day I have not gotten an ingrown toenail

Injection into the “toe” 1:18 then not two seconds later they say the patient’s “finger will then be wrapped”. Hhhmmmm Thought we were talking about toes here. It’s hard to take videos like this seriously when there’s blatant errors such as this. Here’s what I do to avoid the entire medical intervention. And I was a surgical assistant as a career so I’ve seen plenty of these surgeries. You don’t need to cut your toenails flat on the end either. I take a clipper and cut a V notch into the tip end of the toenail. Then I take a sharp knife and starting at the cuticle end I gently scrape and scrape and scrape multiple times to the end of the toenail where I cut the V notch. I scrape until the toenail turns pinker than the rest of the nail which weakens the nail just enough to take the pressure off the ingrown part and the V notch allows the nail to change its outward growth and puts it into a more straight forward growth pattern. Pain goes away almost immediately and the toenail returns to normal in a week.

Mine got swolen so bad and I kinda had to do some self treatment. I figured it was almost like an overgrown pimple so what i did on mine was get a nail pusher, covered the pointy side with cotton then poured alcohol on it. Then i braced myself from the pain and stuck the nail pusher in between the gap of my big toe nail and the swolen side. I just pushed til that gross yellow liquid(sometimes has red) come out. Changed the cotton and continued the process until all the liquid came out. The pain was gone all of a sudden so i then got the nipper and cut the nail that was piercing the skin inside.

The pliers hurt like being stabbed with a big knife but in reverse. The recovery felt like a truck was parked on my open wound. I was finally sick of going so I just spent the rest of high school with an infected big toe. It hurt, and I started feeling flu like symptoms often, but it was way less painful than the surgery. There are two versions of this procedure...there's an in office treatment where they numb you up, clip up the side of the nail and use an injection to kill the nail matrix in that spot. That never worked for me. It always grew back and got ingrown again. Then there's a version where they remove the nail as shown here but open the nail matrix and just cut part of it away. That was the last treatment I got and haven't had an ingrown nail in decades. They did both sides of both big toes. So my nails are narrower than normal but they didn't take quite as big of a margin as this video shows. I probably still have about 60% of the nail after removing both sides.
