I think Tamawashi must some day share his knowledge and experience on staying in fighting condition with the world or at least with the sumo world. Sure, genetics play a role but I cannot imagine the dude not putting in the work to stay on top and to stay healthy every day.
The guy hasn't stayed healthy, he just didn't get one of the classic major injuries like acl or a severe back injury and his recipe is just willing himself on the clay every day for 15 days every 2 months.
When you hear the Elders talking about Terenofuji and remember how they treated the GOAT, Hakuho, the man who saved Sumo and how this bunch continue to treat him with such disrespect, you can see what these old men want - A lap dog.
@@Uruz2012 so many Westerners wanna call themselves fans without even attempting to understand the culture. If they want pure sports competition that's what amateur sumo is for. Ozumo is more than that. Refreshing to see another voice who understands. 👏
@@malapertfourohfour2112 japan is not frozen in time, any more than other cultures the degree of abeisance/compliance required two centuries ago is long gone, and those yankees who yearn for it to be in place are self-deluding how ironic that the leadership from hakuho, breaking ground and leading sumoworld forward (both socially and financially) has been kicked to the curb and lost by a handful of old fogies behind the curtain, attempting to maintain a sense of worthless 'tradition' expired decades ago
Thanks Chris for the outstanding inside information we don't get anywhere else. I was wondering why Teru hasn't retired with all his health issues. But now I know he's waiting on elder stock. I am sure he will after that. He can't keep waiting for someone to make yokozuna. I am sure the sumo association would prefer someone to make yokozuna before he retires. It might be the mighty Onasato. That would be amazing if he passes koto and Hoshoryu. Koto with ankle issues the basho and Hoshoryu with the bad hip isn't 100 percent healthy either.
I wouldn't be surprised if Kotozakura is the prime candidate for a future Yokozuna at this point. Though Onosato is definitely making Ozeki after this month, so he may have a chance at becoming a Yokozuna in the next year or two.
He's proven time and time again that even with 10% knees, he's better than everyone else. Bring in more Mongolians or the sport will continue to be stale. Where are the Hawaiian's?!
Yeapp, the "crown princes" all have abysmal records against Terunofuji. Kotozakura (1-7), Kirishima (0-12), Hoshoryu (0-10, one fusen), Wakatakakage (2-10). It's down right embarrassing, to say the least. Onosato is the only one with a positive record at 2-1.
chris of course they are staying soft on terunofuji it isn't easy to mint a new yokozuna (evidently, only a native japanese is acceptable for this), and the over-the-top hype in trying to show onosato/kotozakura as capable is not in the ballpark (to say the least!) we must wonder if once someone gets anointed, will one of the far-more-capable, foreign-born rikishi also be allowed to ascend? no need to reply; we get the politics in having a channel like yours thanks for the steady content i am really happy for you (and the rest of us sumo-lovers) that your vision and hard work have been yielding so well
I’m a big fan of the Mongolians, Tamawashi is my favorite and Hoshoryu will probably become my new guy once he retires. But I’m not sure what “far more capable” foreign born wrestlers you see? The clear top Yokozuna candidates right now are Hosh, Kotozakura, and Onosato. But none of them are there yet quite frankly, Hosh is inconsistent, Kotozakura needs to find the extra gear to actually win yusho and not just finish runner up, and Onosato needs to actually get to Ozeki first before we can really consider him the next Yokozuna. I don’t see any Yokozuna caliber wrestlers being unfairly held back let alone a foreign born one.
@@paleosapien3468 hello paleo the ten year absence of any japanese-born yusho winner did not miraculously change in 2016 what changed was the scripting, to create a sense that the japanese can compete with the foreign rikishi, which they cannot when one stops listening to the relentless blaring hype, and just looks at the quality of the sumo instead, it is not so difficult to see the likes of takakeisho, goeido, kisenosato, kotoshogiku, onosato, kotozakura cannot be compared to hakuho, kakuryu, harumafuji, akebono, nor to hoshoryu or kirishima, both of whom are still growing even while being held back tamawashi is great, and has followed a different path than aiming for yokozuna a very lucrative path, and long lasting fortunately (not everyone can be the GOAT, nor do all try to be) if what i'm describing herein is difficult to grasp, look into mukiryoku and yaocho (though most forums pretend they do not exist)
Sumo is a ritual first and competition second. While I think Hakuho has been treated unjustly, he must still know his place and accept these priorities, or step out of sumo if he is unwilling or unable. He must know the spotlight is on him more greatly than any other ever, and his behavior must reflect upon sumo more favorable than anyone before him. Even being the greatest competitor does not ensure he is the greatest coach.
Takakeisho needs to quit now rather than later, he,s always gasping for air, heart attack imminant? all these young guys with so many injuries and health problems, obviously not meant to be so obese. Juhaptergee
But aren' yokozuna granted more time to acquire elder stock when they retire? 2 years or something like that? I like Teru but this is starting to become ridiculous.
He just won the previous tournament. You're acting like he isn't fighting at all. How is it ridiculous if he can still win? We only have one yokozuna, I don't really mind if he fights like two tournaments a year if he can still contest a yusho when he does.
So when Terunofiji retires will he be treated the same as Hakuhō and get a slap in the face by that corrupt bunch the JSA..probably not...he should just hurry up and retire cause he wasnt that great tbn..I will always keep calling Hakuhō cause thats his legal name and he still is the Greatest Yokozuna despite the JSA nonsense....
If you don't like Ozumo that much just watch amateur sumo. You obviously have too much contempt for Japanese culture to really understand what you're watching and just want pure sports competition. Amateur is there for you, and it's global.
to claim that teru “wasn’t that great” is just sour grapes he has always been incredibly dominant even when unhealthy fans who think any thing less than hakuho is unimpressive are out of their damn minds
How on Earth is Terunofuji not great? You're blinded by your distaste of the JSA and love of Hakuho. I can agree Hakuho is the GOAT, but that does not discredit Terunofuji, who dropped so far down the ranks when injured and climbed his way back up again tremendously.
So once a year is enough to represent the spirit of the world's oldest stand-up grappling combat sport? Hope they discount tickets when he's not there.
@@Molders32 Yea, it's easy to win when you don't have to fight every single basho injured like everyone else. If he had to fight every basho he would not be dominant. He bows out as soon as a basho isn't going in his favor. It's not exactly awe inspiring.
