I don’t want to be ‘that’ person but it would be better if you said - an actor with Down syndrome given a multi dimensional character. People don’t need to be their diagnosis and some even find it offensive. I’m sure you didn’t mean to cause offence but I just wanted to give my input as a proud mother of a child with Down syndrome ☺️
Not enough spoken and not enough witnessed either. Being a care taker gives you a special kind of power over the people you care and sadly way to many people abuse this power - a fellow care taker
Very proud to have worked on this film - not only a great piece of art, but trying to do something about the way characters with disabilities are perceived, giving people with Down syndrome the full range of human emotions.
Having worked in care woork, don't ever buy into the stereotypical downs as all happy and innocent like a child. They can be, but they can also be just as bad as normal people. They have bad days too.
@jackyscott, Amazing is a total understatement for sure! I literally have no words if I am honest...it was riveting. I am SO glad it was as long as it was because nothing was taken away or left out. It felt like a complete story. The actors were awesome!!😊
I might be reading too much into it, but going from the fact that Sarah put her hand on top of Mike's, she waited patiently for the caretaker to step away from her and faint, the timing of her spitting her medication out after Mike throws the cup at the wall... maybe she's the mastermind behind it! It's so cool that this short film can pass these ideas (even if they turn out to not be the case)
I feel sorry for James taking the fall for Mike's death. Dylan didn't want to blame him. Sure, he thought James was drinking again, but I don't think it was easy for Dylan to shift the blame on him. He pleaded with the Detective that Mike's death was an accident. But Dylan couldn't tell anyone the truth. Not even to turn himself in. He thought if he did, Sarah would be in trouble. And he thought she had been through enough with the abuse. There are no winners in this.
It was totally deliberate James knew the head staff was abusing the woman and did nothing to help that is why he needed to go as well.A disability has nothing to do with intelligence or being deviant.
@@chetyoubetya8565 But I never said anything about intelligence or being a "deviant". This was a tough watch. I'm Autistic, so I know what it's like for people to treat you differently.
This is like the movie Mother 2009, a South Korean movie directed by the guy who did Parasite 2018 (if you've seen it). Mother is pretty much this movie, a modern whodunnit full of sorrow with red herrings everywhere, and a special-needs blame game.
The mind can be never be deciphered. And motivations can never be judged. Even 'trying' to understand is futile. A thinking man's film. Superb acting, extraordinary script.
Congrats to everyone involved. Such a powerful and thought provoking film, with fantastic performance from Tommy Jessop. Fantastic to see a film promoting inclusiveness especially during World's Down's Syndrome Awareness Week
This was so deftly done truly well acted and passionately performed. It challenges our assumptions about certain disabilities and innocence our innate belief that they must coexist. It's a peculiarity and one i will certainly ponder on. Good film.
My cousin had epilepsy. He got a smallpox and polio shot all in one. Had seizures ever since he was five and that very day he had the shot. Many would think he was ignorant. Because of the way he speaked. Although anything he read, he could repeat verbatim. He can do math equations like 3,724 * 429 and have it in just seconds. Faster than we could calculate. Savant smart. Everyone in the family couldn't stand him. I adored him. He was my best friend. When he was 18. He met an old man, at the pharmacy. They started up a conversation, he was there to pick up medication. And they had to hurry because his seizures would start about 11:00 a.m. . The fella said there's a diet for that. It's called the ketogenic diet. Started explaining it to my cousin and said, you could heal your epilepsy. My cousin said hold on let me go get my mom. He ran out to get his mom. Begrudged she got out of the car and went in. The man was missing. He wasn't there. Gone. It looked everywhere. It was the old style pharmacy where they had mirrors close to the ceiling tilted down so you could see anyone in the store at all times. They looked around they even asked the girl up front and the pharmacist. No one had seen him. My cousin said that was an angel mom. I'm going to heal my epilepsy. From there, he started going to the library which opened at 11:00. Sadly he would start having grand mal seizures. It freaked the librarian out because the ambulance would come and they look so deadly. They had a special chair made for him whenever he would go into hard seizures. He had a helmet and a bite. Poor thing. I always got up really early with him to do chores, 2:30 in the morning. He was good until 11:00. What fun we had. Some days by the grace of God he wouldn't have seizures those were awesome days. Finally the library came to his house. Four distinguished people showed up. They explained whatever he wanted they would get for him. He said there's a diet, explain the diet in the book there's a book I don't know but it's called a ketogenic diet. They research. I found a few books. They brought them to him and said they can have the books for free. And any other books that he wanted. Which was precious because he loved to read. He could speak eloquently but he had a stammer. The way he dressed and he smelled like a farm boy. Like I said many would call him ignorant. But truly he was a brilliant wonderful man. With that diet months passed and his pills dwindled he went from taking like 36 pills a day down to three within a year and a few months. By then his seizures were completely gone. And those other pills weren't even medication. Later we found out we have gene mutations in our family. I carry them my son does my mom my grandma her daughter three of her children and of course my cousin. He's 52 this year. And still seizure free. He eats like a carnivore diet now though. So do I. I don't have seizures but I have severe issues with oxalates. I lack the DNA to host the specific bacteria to break down oxalate. Yay me. And I can't methylate properly. Methyl folate and b12 is my best friend. Same with my son. Synthetics and toxins can be very harmful to us. Especially people with down syndrome. This breaks my heart. Because I know so many people with down syndrome carry MTHFR SNP gene mutations. Meaning they can't methylate properly. And a lot of times simple things like folic acid can be a slow cell death for them. For anyone that carries these mutations for that fact.
Phenomenal piece of work- in every aspect of the total production! Gripping, compelling story, all the actors- especially he who portrays Dylan, perceptive direction, camera angles which give the viewer insight from each character’s point of view.. and a double twist that really surprises and satisfies at the end!!!! (Each of those exclamation marks is for one of the elements of this film!) Justice was served in the end! Dylan was perceived to be slow-witted- but he OUTWITTED the detective!
At the end: "For my brother Tom" I hope this wasn't a real story. He threw his brother under the bus, big time.. Ruined his life at the most vulnerable point. He could have save his gf in other ways. This is pretty sad.
How many more people need to be pushed out windows in care homes? We found out how much the elderly were being abused in Canada at LTC homes and they are still being abused now.
And it seems no one will ever be held responsible. So much corruption and yet....the most high profile person to see the inside of a jail cell was an Alberta Pastor who held sermons against the government mandate. This world is going downhill fast.
Wow Wow Wow!!! This is absolutely brilliant & I thoroughly enjoyed this one. That investigators rush to judgement & unethical interview will leave lots of holes in the case, especially when the toxicology reports come back in.
Tommy Jessop (Dylan) was really good in this. I hope to see him in other films! The whole cast was strong, but I found his performance riveting in this fascinating story.
Excellent short, very original and well directed. This required excellent direction to ensure reveal at the end worked and it did perfectly. Really enjoyed it, great performances all round.
I really enjoy when intellectually disabled people are shown as actual human beings with depth and character because that’s what they are in real life.
What you think you know isnt always what you think you know. Very excellent all around. Plot twist. Mystery. Suspicion. All in moment. Most films take hours.
I had trouble following all the details (because I couldn't catch a lot of the dialogue), but DID his brother start drinking again? I saw a scene where he looked very tempted. But it was the abuser who drank the bottle that was drugged.
It's called trauma. Look at it through the eyes of the other brother. He has to take care of his brother (trauma), his mother died (trauma), he went to prison (trauma), he has to work at a place that forces restrictions on his empathy (trauma). Simply because he doesn't has down syndrome, doesn't mean it doesn't effect him profoundly. Now he is 'framed' for murder, even though I understand its a lose-lose-lose situation over all. It's sad that he has to be the unfortunate sacrifice in all this.
@@RU-vidallowedmynametobestolen yes. They hire ex cons. That are child molestors and drug addicts. I should know I was 8n a mental health facility for 18 months and they treat the patient's like their own property
but isn't it sad that Dylan lied on his brother? He and the girlfriend were pretty crafty. Mike was bad, but I think Dylan takes the cake for lying on the one who was trying to protect him most.
😭😭😭 this is sad. This happens in a ton of care homes. Mike got what he deserved. Downs people are often abused and not many people care. This treatment needs to stop.
@@krishelfferich3487 oh yeah I felt the people deserved better got people in trouble then got the boot for trying to make life better for my residents. But at least I tried you know.
A really well crafted short film. Beautifully shot, great music and pacing throughout. Characters full of depth and a great twist at the end. Can see why it picked up awards
Yes, throw all the corrupt care workers out the window... or even better, lock them in a dark room with an abuser to mess with them for life. My family did the right thing and reported the abuser. Don't do that... if you go down the honest road of reporting those evil people, they'll put you in prison for reporting and give the abuser a medal for their sick behaviour so they can continue the abuse of vulnerable people.😡 Deranged world we're living in. Absolutely chilling and brilliant short film.👏👏👏
@@sonquatsch8585 people with Mosaic Down's may have normal intellect and can be just as functional as anyone else; e.g. they can develop and carry out a complex plan to murder a c*nt rapist and frame their alcoholic ex-con brother, like the rest of us do when the situation calls for this.
Wow, it was interesting to see the other side of abuse within a care home, where the carers suffered too. And Dillon played the baddie very well, drugging the carers, committing murder and framing his brother.... An all round nasty guy!
I loved this movie and wish there were more were produced. I wished art imitated life more. When I see a Western movie made up of totally homogeneous people to more it reflects how the directors see the world. I cannot get through the first 30 minutes of my day without seeing someone from a different country, ethnicity, religion, gender or socioeconomic background. Maybe these homogenous bubbles do exist if so I believe extreme exhaustive effort must be expended to maintain them. Thanks for a great film please keep reflecting the and including the real people who make up this big blue marble.
I’m glad Dylan found courage to do what he had to do, but that’s EXTRA messed up that he blamed his brother when his brother did nothing but try to look out for him wtf Dylan
