Today we have a Check Engine Light on our Chevrolet Kodiak with the Duramax LLY Diesel. Luckily, the folks over at Innova were kind enough to send over this Innova 5610 OBD2 Scan Tool for us to review. We'll figure out what's wrong with this Medium-Duty Diesel and then take a better look at the scan tool on a more modern vehicle.
The Innova 5610 is a small scanner packing HUGE features. This will absolutely become my go-to scanner.

great review of the innova, very few reviews go into enough detail to see whether it worth the high price over basic scanners, most barely know how to operate it. i found the 5610 is sold under another model number in some retail stores, and in Harbor Freight as the Zurich scanners. I like it goes through a lot of tests fairly quickly, uses AA vs a rechargeable [ which go bad over time and are a pain to replace whereas AA are everywhere] and has a superb manual for DIY like me. also for its price its lifetime updates versus annual license fees, granted long time owners say update frequency has been spotty until recently. Thanks for your channel!!

Great video! Thank you. The Innova 5610 is $345 on Amazon. The Zurich ZR15S is $295 at Harbor Freight. Best I can tell, they are the same machine. Is it worth $50 more to get the Innova? Thanks, in advance, for every ones comments.

Nice review. I've had this scanner for about 3.5 years and it's okay but it's lacking a lot of information. It is limited on the modules it can read and a lot of the listed functions it says it has is not supported on a lot of the vehicles I have tried it on. I also own the OBD 1 adapters from another Innova scan tool that I own and still own two OBD1 vehicles. While this tool supports OBD 1, it's pretty useless for that application. The last time I hooked it up to my 92 Cavalier, it showed that the car had every code set that the car supports even though the CEL was not on and the car ran fine. I just hooked it up so I could see what info I could see. For a little more money, the Xtool D7 would be a much better tool that can access way more information than the 5610 does.
@ProjectTimeGarage
@ProjectTimeGarage 9 месяцев назад
Good info. For most OBD1 applications, the small scan tools are REALLY hit and miss and basically only show you sane info the flashing check engine light does. I ended up buying an OTC 4000E OBD1 scanner, and I've been collecting cartridges for some time. These will even do some live data on OBD1, plus they're pretty cheap on Ebay since they're largely obsolete.
@Mr2004MCSS
@Mr2004MCSS 9 месяцев назад
@@ProjectTimeGarage For OBD 1, I mostly use my old AutoXray 6000 scanner which does show live data and gives a lot of information for the older stuff. Mine has all of the enhanced information for several of the manufacturers. Unfortunately, the company was bought out in around 2006-7 and the tool was no longer supported after that. It also does great on OBD II up to those years as well and can read the cam retard offset for my 98 Chevy truck which the 5610 scanner cannot do. My main scanner is a Thinktool Pros which does pretty much everything I need.

I will never understand why vehicle makers charge $50,000 + for a new vehicle and do not supply a basic scan too such as this. I will never understand.

Eh, they know most people will just take them to the dealer and pay overinflated rates.
@madlad8059
@madlad8059 9 месяцев назад
The manufacturer probably does but they supply it to the dealership not the consumers.
@johnny0454
@johnny0454 7 месяцев назад
They don't want people performing their own repairs. They make most of their money in the service centers at the dealership, not from the initial sale. That's why they purposefuly engineer their vehicles to only just barely make it through the warranty period, after that, all the repairs needed are just gravy for them. They design them with planned obsolescence in mind so they always have the upper hand. Have you heard of the big "right to repair" controversy? The manufacturers actually wanted (and tried) to block access to their vehicle's on-board "proprietary software" so that only the dealers could access it. I believe there is currently a law called "the right to repair law", which was put in place after some class action lawsuits for that very reason.
@ProjectTimeGarage

Awesome video. Thank you. I have a question. It may sound ridiculous to those who know the answer, but I won't know unless I ask. When you are looking at the reading and hit clear or erase, is that clearing/erasing the reading on the scanner or on the vehicle? I'm not sure I'm using proper wording for this question. Maybe reset is the term. I'm just curious as to where the action is taking lace. On the vehicles computer or the reader? Take care.
