Emphysema, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), is a progressive, inflammatory lung disease that makes breathing difficult. Symptoms include shortness of breath, chest tightness, wheezing and a recurrent cough that produces large amounts of mucus.
While emphysema has no cure, treatments and lifestyle changes can help those with the disease feel better, stay more active and slow the disease’s progress. Pulmonologist Amit K. Mahajan, MD lead a presentation about a new treatment option, called bronchoscopic lung volume reduction (BLVR), which places tiny endobronchial valves in the lungs. The minimally invasive procedure helps people with severe emphysema, including COPD, breathe easier. Inova Fairfax Hospital is one of the most experienced centers now offering BLVR.

I enjoyed this video and remain hopeful that I may be a candidate sometime within the year. A friend of mine - first name only, is Charlie. He had the procedure and several weeks later, he said he was swimming! Wow. He had difficulty walking and now he tells me he is swimming. A month later he somehow got pneumonia and was back on the oxygen. That was a surprise for me. I haven't seen him lately and with the Cov-id 19, I probably won't see him for a while. I'm hoping he is back to not having to take oxygen during the day. Once again, for those who have COPD, may I suggest that you listen to this webinar and go to the website. More information and success stories can be found at HTTP://www.mylungsmylife.com - Since I play the trumpet (not good) I enjoyed listening to Michael's success story at the site I just mentioned.
