XMG has been pretty explicit about the fact that it only works with 3200MHz native RAM NOT XMP overclocked stuff. That's what the timings were so bad on the kit they sent you. It's JEDEC rated on the standard SPD for a base speed of 3200MHz WITHOUT XMP. Use the kit they sent you, and 3200MHz should work.

NOICE ONE on the LN Roman! :) The hard shutdown at 10:20 was the boards EC Amps hard limit (~97.5A) being exceeded (No way to alter this via BIOS or software). Using LN kept it afloat...but that's what a regular user will experience when trying to utilize the 3950X in any NH5xAx in a similar fashion. Only wish they would allow these AMD CPUs to be combined in models with a 200W 2080S in MXM flavor.

6943 point at 55W is amazing! 126 points per watt - that's on par with the efficiency of the 4000 mobile series. And he didn't mention a key part - contrary to the 4000 series, this CPU can be undervolted! Meaning that one can potentially get the CPU to work even more efficiently than shown in the video!

honestly a really great price as well, like seriously, there's laptops with half the cores and gpu power that cost twice as much.

Cool to see the new Clevo computers going strong! Reminds me of my old laptop "Clevo P651rs-g" :) Close to what you did with LN2, I soldered on 2 slim water blocks on to the copper heat-pipes, with quick-connect water-hoses on the outside of the laptop's case. This made the i7-8700hq and GTX1070 run close to desktop performance while connected to water, and still be a laptop to bring out of the home office. For anyone Interested in "external laptop cooling": The pump, reservoir, radiator, fans and a 12Vdc power supply was used separately from the computer. Copper water blocks bought from AliExpress or equivalent with a small hose size to fit inside a laptop case. Only water hoses connected the laptop to the cooling solution. Fanspeed was dynamic based on a thermistor and pumpspeed was at 100%. *Note: Soldering copper blocks to the heatpipes is something i won't attempt again, it requires very high temperature from a blow torch.

I've never seen anyone just randomly ln2 a laptop. Haha I love it. Great content. Wish it was at least gen4 and gen 3 nvme. But still a nice laptop

I am ordering one of these. This is a dream laptop, so many upgrade possibilities.

One of the key differences on the 3700X versus the 3950X is the amount of L2 cache and L3 cache. There is 100% more L2 cache and 100% more L3 cache on the 3950X, so the additional cores are not being limited by a reduced relative cache per core. If I understand it correctly, that is why there is basically no detriment to CPU performance. I am not sure if or how the power limits would affect it overall, but this could explain why it did not lose performance like in other situations when SMT is enabled/disabled.

They could add a pair of quick disconnect couplings for optional external water loop :-) A docking station with adequate radiator could unlock the full desktop power.

What a great looking workstation laptop! A little less plastic and a lot more aluminium or magnesium would be nice just for durability but you can't deny it's got the important stuff inside.

Getting the CPU stuck to the cooler is an issue so old AMD should be ashamed of not trying to address it on AM4. All it takes is a pressure plate to come down and lock the CPU on all sides, like Intel is doing forever now...

THANK YOU @der8auer your the only reviewer/youtube that i've seen that has the correct single threaded for the 3950X i have one on a AIO Castle 360EX cooler and i get between 499, 505, 510 in single threaded test on r20 depending on what's running in the background and ever since i got it since release day.... i could NEVER get the 520+ other popular reviewers have been getting no matter what i did stock,OC,PBO you name it.... and i could never figure out why.... unless they have absolutely NOTHING running in the background which is VERY UNREALISTIC in normal real world usage as they like to called it.. anyways thank you for that now im at ease lol....

i'm sure alot of people will appreciate replaceable battery, easy access to internal component and of course the mounting cpu. just perfect.

der8auer has shifted interest onto laptops too. That's nice, some people prefer laptops over desktops, but problem lies on current battery technology. Waiting for it to evolve and high-performance laptops don't need to tethered all the time

Just a thought. Wouldn't it be more effective keeping the heatpipes just above 0 degrees celsius? The reson i was wondering was because the water in the heatpipes freezes when they're below 0 degrees celsius and then only the copper would transfer the heat making it less efficient.

Well you just showed me the laptop that I want, love the fact that I can buy the base model w/ a 2070 and update the processor later on down the road as the 3600x is not a bad CPU to start with. Also considering the the upcoming gen of 4000 series desktop CPU's should still be using the AM4 socket so that should be a killer option. Always love watching your content man - you never disappoint and expand my knowledge in this space

Disappointing that they didn't nickel-plate the coldplates, given all the enthusiast features that notebook has. Maybe they can fix that before release.

that is pretty cool really surprised you was able to get as much as you did out of it on the stock cooling config I know what ya saying about the casing but agree with others its not necessary a bad thing it looking like that throw in a nice panel and I'd be good with it perhaps strengthen it up a bit but yeah its fine

Is the GPU soldered on? Really like that it seems to be welcoming those who want to detach parts/upgrade stuff themselves when the laptop starts showing age. But if the GPU is soldered it seems a bit strange to go that route. I've owned a Clevo P751DM for 5 years now. It's a chunky Clevo with a desktop CPU just like this one. It hasn't missed a beat apart from last Winter the 980M fried and stopped working. I replaced it myself with a new replacement from a reseller in China. Chucked it in, repasted and re applied thermal pads.... and it's worked like a dream ever since. However, i would like to upgrade in the next year or 2. The Apex 15 looks like my cup of tea for sure, but if there are any soldered parts - it's a complete deal breaker for me.

my friend got new BIOS for this machine, 1.07.02. They removed restrictions on the ppt, edc, tdc. Maybe you can rerun again after updating the bios?

While the plastic cases clevo has made don't feel that premium the plastic really is stronger and holds up better then you would think. Ive seen a door (yes a wood door of all things) fall and hit one on the wrist rest and do almost 0 damage

I don't understand everyone's distaste for plastic chassis on laptops. If they can take the money wasted on using metal for better cooling it would be a win in my book. I've yet to have a plastic laptop crack on me; maybe I'm an exception? I'm a function over form type of person though. If I was in the market for a mobile workstation this one looks amazing.

I hope that they keep the vent holes on the bottom of the laptop or maybe even add more of them

XMG? Sager/clevo or eurocom desktop replacement? Probably could easily mod the bios, Insyde/h2o has tons of resources available and it's pretty easy for what I remember from like 5-8 years ago (before I switched to mac pro 5.1 which still rocks (have 6 of them, messing around with hardmods) :PP)

i would like to see a test or a series of benchmarks games and workloads how much is the difference between ddr4 3200mhz and 3200mhz cl16... or one more in between 19 lets say. is this even noticable? shouldn't you go for the 3200mhz 21cl for example vs the 2666mhz 16cl? the latency is that big of a difference? 🙄🙄🙄

I'd rather it be completely open to build. Say you buy it without some parts. I'll use the CPU I have as a spare, the RAM I already have and so on. It's time laptops become just as customizable as desktops. I want my laptop to uniquely my build.

I think you should've benchmarked a multiplayer game as well since we're talking about cpu's. Games with high player counts (like battle royales) require a lot of cpu performance, so I'm sure the comparison with the 3700x would've made more of a difference there.

Since there are desktop components in this laptop and its already pretty thick, would it be too much to remove the loud laptop fans that are probably not working that well and just add instead a couple of those noctua low profile fans? Perhaps by manufacturing a new base covering so they can slot in. In a new iteration perhaps they should even completely remove those copper heat pipes to save thickness from there and just add two low profile noctua coolers directly to the motherboard for the cpu and gpu?
