Bobby, really enjoyed the 20 ga challenge. I have a Mossberg 500c that I bought 48 years ago. It was my go to gun for twenty plus years. I still have it and break it out for dove hunting, occasionally. The Western Field shotgun used by your friend was sold through Montgomery Ward's. My very best friend had a 12 ga Western Field with the exact same select-a-choke. I borrowed it once for duck hunting back in the 60's. Very accurate.

when I was 6 my dad got me a 410, after a little while I was given a 20gauge. I dropped everything with that. and it's still operational after being nearly 40 years old. looks like a fun hunt! cheers from alaska ✌️👊

I grew up shooting a 20 gauge. I'd still use it if it fit me. I've killed a pile of geese with #2s in a 20 gauge!

This helped solidify buying a 20 ga for kiddo and he can still goose hunt with me ethically. Awesome video man we love them.

My grandpa gave me a New Haven with the C-lect choke! It's pretty much exactly the same gun, Mossberg made both the Western Field and New Haven models. Western field just called it an adjustable choke, New Haven called it the C-lect choke and they are both poly-chokes. Really cool to see one used on one of your videos!!

Hi Bob , I am in the UK , I have enjoyed watching your videos , I was very sad to see your good friend Fred's departure from your hunting life , although I am certain he is still enjoying his more relaxed home comforts ! Had dogs all my life , working and pets , more pets now as I am pretty much out of the hunting life but still enjoy seeing it on the screen ! And understand the loss of a great working partnership . My father was a gamekeeper for many years from when I was about 5-6 years old and I later became a keeper from the ages of 16- 21 . I am writing this , as in my earlier years , I remember one of my father's old employers who shot only with a 20 bore shotgun on Bignor Hill of the South Downs , and believe me , he shot better birds off there than any fellow 12 bore owners , pheasant , ducks , Canada geese , greylags , foxes and pigeons that I remember witnessing , added to that , I remember another chap prior to that who had said with the right load of gunpowder, wadd and shot , that there's nothing you can't kill with a 410 that you can with a 12 bore , you just have to be more accurate , not as much shot in a 410 or a 20 bore as there is in a 12 , never witnessed his slayings , but there were others who had . That Western field is probably a Mossberg, it certainly looked like it! It's a poly choke, an add on. So, 3 Mossbergs! Great video

I got one of those chokes we use it for running deer with the dogs full for open spots mod for the brush and Cylinder for when the dogs have them on the ground

My grandpa has an adjustable choke for his 12 gauge pump and has used it for duck hunting all his life. Always handy 👍🏻

I bought the same gun from Monkey Wards in Plattsburgh, NY in 1973. Gave it to little brother when I graduated to an 870 12 ga. He sawed the barrel and added sights for a deer gun but that didn’t work. He then found a correct slug barrel and that worked good. He recently gave the gun back to me cause NY no longer requires shotguns for deer. It’s too bad the barrel with the chokes is gone.

I use a 20 Ga. often on my farm pond hunts and it adds so much to the hunt. Looks like a lot of fun and I sure enjoy your videos.

Western Field shotguns were sold by Montgomery Ward, most are rebranded Mossberg shotguns including the one in the video. The adjustable choke was a Mossberg thing. I have a 12 gauge bolt action Western Field with that same choke (Rebranded Mossberg 395k)

I have that same Westernfield in 12 gauge with the C-Lect choke passed down from my dad. Their parts are compatible with Mossy 500's. It's been downgraded to shoot just lead and I bought a new Moss 500 last season for steel.

I just bought a pre-1964 Sears and Roebuck 12 gauge with a poly choke like that. It’s a fun little farm gun

That choke is called a “polly choke” it adjusts from full to bore If you mess with them you can tune em in pretty good

I have an adjustable choke on my Mossberg 500c 20 gauge. I keep it in full, don't let it get wet because no matter how much oil you put on it, they'll rust and you won't be able to change the choke setting

Wow! You are doing all these challenges about 20yrs after I did! I've also shot 100s of Canada Geese with my 20ga. In my opinion it's every bit as deadly as a 12. Love my Browning Gold 20ga. It's called a C-Lect Choke I had one on a Mossberg back in the 70s n 80s. They are still available

I own a Westfield 12 gauge adjustable choke like that gun. Killed turkey's with it too, super nice gun

I exclusively shoot a 12 guage Mossberg 500A polychoke pump for ducks. The ability to adjust to species and shot distance has turned many hunts from a skunk to an epic hunt.

My buddy snipe hunts with one of those adjustable choke tubes. Somedays you gotta make farther away shots, comes in handy

i have my great grand fathers goose gun made in 1909 Remington model 10 and it has a adjustable choke it is a great piece. and still in action too a lot of care for that gun

Westernfield with adjustable choke made on contract by Mossberg also known as a hardware gun. I have one in 20 and in 16. I have used my 20 for duck,goose and pheasant for almost 3 years in Ohio. Just have to watch it because it will adjust itself after they are fired or that is what my gun will do. Love all the challenges that you are posting.

I smoked a rather large sandhill crane with some Winchester Drylock #4’s out of my 20 gauge. Took one shot and he was probably 30 yards. Plenty of knockdown power.

That's called a Poly Choke. That was a friggin cool hunt! Kind of near and dear to my heart as I hunt with a 20ga for quail and dove all the time. Great video!

That choke is called a C-Lect. Mossberg put them on lots of guns years ago. Westernfield was a company that had guns made for them by Mossberg. My dad used one of them for a lot of years and killed lots of gobblers and a few geese with it. He still breaks it out from time to time for dove hunts and the like.

Good shooting, what size shot are you guys using? The choke on the Western Field is called a Accu Choke, they are a good system.

My 1st shotgun was a Western field 20ga. Bolt action with that same poly choke.

Need to try bismuth for the older guns, especially with 20 gauges. Boss Shotshells make a great little load for them.

Awesome hunt to watch Bobby! Wish we could still shoot geese in VT. We are done for the season and don't see a lot of snows as they migrate through NY. My blind has 3 ft of water in it so I hope it goes down before our second opener on the 23rd!

I use a 28 gauge for everything and it smokes everything from doves to sand hill cranes. We shot a 3 man limit on greater Canada's here in Wyoming with 28's a while back. It was awesome. I don't use a 12 gauge anymore.

I use to smoke big honkers with a 20ga. With a couple 45-50yd shots.

My grandpa has a 16 guage browning with an adjustable choke like your buddy's.... Can go from IMPROVED CYLINDER-EXTREME FULL... Pretty cool

I grew up hunting with a mossberg 20 ga that had one of those poly chokes on it. Great gun, had a blast on many duck hunts with that thing. A word of advice though if you have one, pattern your gun. Those adjustable chokes, while being a great idea, were known for 2 things. Producing poor patterns, and getting stuck in one particular position. It’s a good idea if you have one to keep it well oiled and pull it out of the safe periodically and turn it back and forth to keep it from locking up. Hope this helps. Happy hunting!
