It wasn't the "asking for ID" that got her arrested. It was the physical assault. The officer should've made that clear. She wouldn't be arrested if she'd asked for his disability ID, and walked away when he refused to give it to her.

Can I say how proud I am of this officer for knowing the ADA laws, and that service dogs don't have to wear a vest? However, there is no registration for a service dog. Fake ones are sold online so people can have their misbehaving dogs in apartments or bring them into stores. Many service dogs have been attacked by these untrained fakes and that's a real problem. Real service dogs have to go through extensive training and don't misbehave.

I have combat related PTSD and I have a service dog that works with me to distract and calm me down. My dog is my lifeline, she's my best friend and she really helps keep me grounded. If I ever have to go anywhere without her I'm a nervous wreck and I literally fall to pieces, it becomes hard to really focus on anything save a sense of being overwhelmed by literally everything that exists. It's really hard to explain, but she gets it. She pulls me back constantly to the now with nose pokes, setting her head on my knee, asking for pets and leans against my leg. She gets me even when people I'm closed to don't get it. I have often been asked by people why I need her, as I don't outwardly seem like I would need her. I'm not blind, I don't have any issue that presents itself physically unless I have an "episode". I've had people question her legitimacy before, ask to pet her, try and distract her while we're in a store, and the like. Some people talk about how scared they are of dogs (which I understand, not everyone likes them) rather loudly to draw attention to us. I think they don't realize that I'm actually just as distrustful and scared of them as they are of my service animal. Oddly though, I have never once had someone come up to me and demand that I prove that she is in fact a service dog by producing evidence. Most stores that we visit just give us space and go about their way. I've always found that it's shoppers who care the most, not the store itself.

I also have a service dog. Diagnosed PTSD. I’ve been through the same thing, having people demand so much information from me and even getting their CHILDREN to go up and pet her when she’s on duty. The worst part is, since my dog has the “Bubble Task”, where she keeps a personal space bubble around me, and the children end up crying and WE get the dirty looks when she barks at them to go away. I only go out when I need to or when I know I will not need to be hospitalized if I go out. The worst is when people take photos and videos of us in enclosed spaces (like the bus), and I don’t have anywhere to run off to or hide behind. I hate my appearance already and having people record me and my service dog is so humiliating. I use ASL when I can’t speak (can’t find my voice during panic attacks) so I can’t just “tell them to stop”, but goodness I WISH I could. Believe me, I’ve tried, but people just don’t LEAVE.

In short, gaslighting happens when someone manipulates you into thinking your version of events didn’t happen the way you say they happened. They may gaslight you by questioning your authority, denying the evidence you have or doing everything they can to make you feel like you’re wrong. Once at the grocery store a man in his 60's proceeded to get in front of me in every isle just to block me from being able to look at and get items, all the while he kept looking back at me and smiling and laughing. As a counselor, I'd advise the police and everyone to not engage with these lunatics. Only tell them what you must, like, if you're a cop and need to tell them what to do. Getting into conversations with them is futile. You cannot argue with crazy, drunk or drugged up people. I am always amazed that people even try. In that way, you take charge. You should keep a distance from them, verbally, perhaps, even physically if the situation requires it. This situation is a perfect example of why not to engage them. He had to repeat himself over and over, and she STILL ranted on, asking the same things over and over. Once you've told someone something, and they do what she did, simply say to them, "I already answered that," or "I already told you" and stop responding to their demands for attention and control, for that is what all this is really about. That forces them to be quiet and rethink the last parts of the conversation and to find their own answers, to think for themselves. This could help them in the long run, and it will give you some peace while they do it or, perhaps, time to get away from them. Also, everyone should learn some sort of self defense,

I get that! I had a service dog and also have cptsd. I was homeless with him for a long time, for years. Getting some paperwork/tags/patches helps a lot...it's definitely not required, but for a few bucks off Amazon, it really goes a long way as far as "proving" their authentication, even if it's not actually necessary by law. I guess mine was more like an emotional support dog, but he was trained well and did provide a valuable service. And being homeless, you don't have the option to leave them at home even if you wanted to. You just have to be confident and firm, and let people know that you'll answer that yes he is a service dog, but they cannot demand to know what service they provide, and to look up the Americans with Disabilities Act (or have the info on hand to present). No one really ever messed with me, definitely never had anyone be violent. I was refused service a few times but backed down and didn't press the issue even though it was technically violating my rights, I just didn't have the spine to push back at the time. I hope you can find the confidence and courage to go out with yours in spite of what a few people might say or do. It's your right to do it, not their right to try to bully you out of it. @Sergio91564 nothing presented indicates that the dog actually was a service dog. It had no markings, it had no vest, because she assaulted the guy, no one asked him "well is your dog actually a service dog?" He could have an invisible disability but there's 2 reasons service dogs wear stuff. If there was an emergency, people wouldn't know that the dog is helping. The other is because it tells people to leave the dog alone. Legally you don't need to wear the vest but you're usually going to see the dog in it. Having 0 indicators that a dog is a service dog leads to situations like this, and frankly, that's an indication of a fake service dog. What makes me think she was telling the truth that it jumped on her, is that she didn't lie about her own actions to make her sound better.
